  1. I've heard conflicting stories about whether or not there is a minimum salary required to be eligible for a work permit.  Any ideas?  Also, any hints about job descriptions on the WP application that make it obvious that the job can't be done by a Thai?

Make it 45,000 or better 50,000 Baht/month (or even more is better!)

Managing Director normally works fine. The description shall include "... transfer skills, techniques and knowledge to Thai employees."

  2. Nation Channel to exit UBC on May 1

Nation Channel will cease its programming on United Broadcasting Corporation on May 1, according to a joint statement issued by Nation Multimedia Plc and UBC yesterday.

An industry source said Nation Channel programming would move to Thai TV, a direct-to-home pay service available in limited areas of Bangkok.

``The continuing ban on advertising on UBC prevents local programme producers from generating sufficient revenues to maintain their services,'' said UBC chief executive officer Sompan Charumilinda.

He said the exit of Nation Channel followed the closure of the Panorama Channel, a struggling Thai documentary producer, last year.

Nation Group had a 10-year contract to supply programming on UBC Channel 8, starting in March 2000.

  3. How easy is it to get residency inThailand?  If it's not easy, do I get a temp visa and keep renewing it once I'm there?

    --

I've heard that you can own a condo but not a house, or is better to rent?

Here is a reply for your visa/residency questions:

The first step is to obtain a NON-B visa. This can be entended year by year if you are employed, starting your own business here or marry a Thai citizen. After three years with yearly extensions you can apply for residency, depending on nationality and other factors. What is your nationality?

Regarding condo purchase: Start renting the place you like, and consider buying after living there for a while.

Buying house: You CAN own a house in Thailand, but NOT the land it stands on. Be a bit careful here! Other members here, with more land experience, can give you an explanation why!

    Rent it!

Thailand tightens border screening after first SARS death

BANGKOK - Thailand increased its monitoring at airports and border checkpoints Sunday following the first death in the country attributed to a new flu-like illness that has killed at least 55 people and infected more than 1,550 worldwide.

Health officials at Bangkok's international airport are screening incoming passengers for the disease, called severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said.

About a dozen visitors have been quarantined so far, with most released within a few hours, but some kept for over a day, Sudarat said.

She emphasized that the stepped-up measures were prompted by the spread of the disease abroad, not locally.

"The disease is still under control in Thailand. We're still safe,'' she said.

On Saturday, a World Health Organization expert on communicable disease, Dr. Carlo Urbani, 46, died at a Bangkok hospital with SARS symptoms.

Urbani, who was based in Geneva, had been receiving treatment in Thailand after becoming infected while working in Vietnam. Urbani was the first to identify the outbreak in Hanoi, where four people have died.

Dr. Charal Trinvuthipong, director-general of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, said 33 medical personnel, including foreigners and Thais, who took care of Urbani have been screened for the disease and are still under close watch.

Meanwhile, the Thai government urged its citizens not to visit Canada, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Vietnam, the countries worst hit.

"We'd really appreciate if Thais avoid going to those countries as they're suffering from local transmission right now,'' Sudarat said. "It is too dangerous and the damages are too great.''-AP

  5. Stones to keep fans hanging for 2 days

Virus forces change in itinerary for tour

The Rolling Stones have postponed their Bangkok show from Tuesday April 8 to Thursday April 10, according to promoter BEC TERO Entertainment Co.

The company said in a press release the Forty Licks world tour schedule had changed following the cancellation of some concerts.

Concerts in Shanghai on April 1 and Beijing on April 4 have been cancelled due to World Health Organisation and Centres for Disease Control warnings over severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars), and concerns from the Chinese public over the safety of large public gatherings.

The Rolling Stones tour will continue with concerts on April 4 in Bangalore, April 7 in Mumbai and April 10 in Bangkok.

In the statement, vocalist Mick Jagger says: ``We are very sad and disappointed not to be able to do these concerts. We have been looking forward to the shows in China for so long and will reschedule them as soon as possible.''

Due to the change in schedule, it was necessary to move the Bangkok date to April 10.

The band has assured the promoter it will perform in Bangkok.

The band apologised for any inconvenience caused by the date change.

All tickets already issued will be honoured on the new date.

Ticket holders unable to go on the new date will get a full refund from the Thaiticketmaster head office, 24th floor, Emporium Tower, Sukhumvit Road, from April 2-8, 10am - 6pm.

Earlier this week the ageing rockers cancelled two concerts in Hong Kong this weekend, also due to fears over Sars, which has claimed more than 50 lives and infected about 1,500 people.

  6. crlasia, you are right, I will edit the re-entry page this weekend to clarify. FYI: Re-entries are not easy to explan, the main reason why the Immigration has this is re-entry requierment is to break any chance for a foreigner to have three consecutive years of visa extensions, and NOT be eligible to apply for residence.

Thanks for heads up! We are not sitting in the knee of Immigration, so I will try to make it more clear!

May I ask why, how and where did you got a "NON-RS" visa? This is a very rare visa type!

    Just curious! ???

New: With the continuing campaign by the police being conducted until April 30th, we once again urge everyone not to overstay! Roadblocks, random checks can only result in headaches and grief if you are stopped and have an overstay. Call now and we can fix it.

New info: Please visit our website for information concerning types of visas available and requirements for work permits. http://geocities.com/xxxxx/workpermits.htm

Some common sense tips to make your life easier!

Always carry a photocopy of your passport with you at all times. The police CAN hold your if you do not have your passport. With a photocopy they will usually let you go!

Check your departure date and your passport expiration date. These are important. Every week we get someone in a rush for a visa and they have overstayed (increasing their expense) and in a hurry for a visa that cannot be issued due to passport expiration!

You cannot get a new visa unless your passport remains valid.

If you want something on the very cheap,...you will have to go to the border yourself.! Save all the bother, fuss, discomfort and risk of visa refusal! Let us do it for you!

DON'T LISTEN TO RUMORS and self appointed 'experts' Get the facts before your

act. We are here to help! Call us.

If you have visa questions or problems, call us! Call us yourself and don't have your wife

or a friend do it for you. YOU have the problem, we HAVE the questions and YOU have

the answers we need in order to help you! 01-373-xxxx M-Sat. 10:00 to 19:00.

There are people in this world that ....have a tendency to listen to anything that anyone has to say! A lot of half-correct or dis-information goes out and these people never check their sources! People love to believe rumors in light of conflicting facts!

We cannot stress enough that to listen to rumours and then to ACT, without checking the facts; can only cause unnecessary problems and greater expense for all concerned!

THINK, call us for the facts....then act!

When we call you to tell you your passport has arrived back, don't delay in picking it up!

It is in your interest to receive your passport as soon as possible.

If you change your telephone number or email during the time we have your passport, make sure you notify us of the change.

Remember: If you are in an overstay position and want us to deal with the situation, we charge you only to the day we receive your passport. We don't add additional days on as it is our responsibility to clear it for you as soon as possible.

Good news! If you have been previously married to a Thai, this can help on your next visa.

Jobs! Before leaving your current job, it is essential for you to obtain your tax payers card, your tax return (completed form 90 or 91) and paid tax receipts (yellow cash register receipt) from your place of work. And a release letter from your employer!

It is your responsibility to do so. You cannot change your visa sponsorship over to a new employer without these. Your employer will have all of this and they are obligated to give them to you, but you have to ask for them. It is your right to have them. If they don't or you don't want to ask for them, we can still help!

Important: Be sure to check the departure date on your entry stamp! We must have your passport in our office at least 4 days before your departure date. Overstays are 200 baht per day! It is also important to check the expiration date on your passport!

  9. The url you posted was regarding S&A Visa. They are illegal, but say they are following the law. I doubt it.

Illegal Visa agents - a few related news links:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/431.0.html

    http://www.thaivisa.com/339.0.html

    http://www.thaivisa.com/477.0.html

Hundreds of passports travels every day to Malaysia without their owners, it's a multi million baht business every month.

It might work, but you can end up in jail and be deported for illegal entry if immigration finds out, as you have not entered in person.

Stay away from the agents and do your visa runs by yourself!

We have asked S&A Visa for a comment, but they have not answered our emails.

  10. A work in a bar would require work permit, YES.

The problem is that they will NOT approve a work permit, because that work can be don by a Thai.

If you are investing in a big restaurant (not a bar), bringing in funds to the country, employ Thais, pay taxes, transfer knowledge to Thais, you can have one.

For example a Girl Bar or Beer Bar would be impossible.

All work in Thailand requires work permit, no exceptions.

  11. Hi laduladiva and welcome to Thailand Expat Forum.

Bring/post your passport, photo and the faxed documents to the Hull Consulate and ask for a NON-B double or multi entry. Letters in orginal will bet better than faxed docs. Forget London, they will not be very helpful, according to earlier posts here.

You CAN get a work permit without a degree, TEFL should be enough. Maybe someone else here at the Forum can give you more details about TEFL.
