I'm trying to understand the pork market deal.  Thailand has a thriving pork market, and the meat is reasonably priced.  Open it up to US producers, they dump cheap pork on the Thai market, drive the Thais out of business, and then raise the prices.  They should be concentrating on the tariff and duties imposed on US good coming into the Thai market.  When I'm buying consumer products that have a 2 to 3x markup due to tariffs, that's something that needs to be addressed.

Brianp0803 post above nails it.  The tariffs and duties should be quid pro quo.  Either Thai drops tariffs or the US implements identical tariffs.  But instead - pork?  It's already a saturated market.  <head shake>

I'm also looking at these deals and I don't see how they benefit that average citizens in either country.  Just corporate and government interests, like usual.

Only parts of the pig that are not consumed in the US will be exported

to Thailand. Much ado about nothing as far as I am concerned. That said

I agree the Americans should focus on getting Thailand to drop tariffs on

American goods to even out the trade imbalance.

  2. What needs to be clearly posted at each beach is the number of swimmers

that have drowned in the past year at each particular beach. Saying it is

dangerous or the beach is closed with red flags is not enough. If conditions

are not appropriate yes close the beach. However if possible a small area

should be marked where lifeguards can monitor with extra vigilance to make as safe

as possible.I spent six months in Phuket during the rainy season where the red

flags were up every day. Some days warranted, many days not.  During monsoon

season the default position is put up the red flags so when someone drowns you

shrug and say the beach was closed. Life guards doing multiple jobs, beach chair

rental etc...... does not help. They should be focused on their jobs as lifeguards.

Of course she's persecuted. This is s power struggle between two factions and right now the old elite has the upper hand and is calling the shots. Does anyone really believe that the junta is actually trying to root out corruption and implement meaningful reforms??

    Well then;

Yes she is being persecuted but she is also guilty.

And I'm afraid he is right. MY lawyer, no connection to my wife, explained that under Thai, a (registered) married couple are the same legal entity, and cannot sue each other. All property (in Thailand AFAIK) is jointly owned.

Yes but he may have not been divorced from his previous wives

leaving him a bigamist and not legally married to this woman.

That said she found him in a gambling den. If the money is all

spent she has no chance of getting anything back and his penalty

will be a slap on the wrist and a warning not to do it again. That

is if and I mean if, he is found guilty. After all how many Thai

women have suffered any consequences doing the same to

    Farang men.

  5. I put aluminum foil on the bedroom windows (reflective side out)

Also keep the blackout curtains drawn. Set the air con on 27c at night.

I like my bedroom as dark as possible and dry more than cool.

I use the fan in the living room in the AM and early afternoon. When it

starts to get too hot, I close the living room blackout curtains and turn

on the air con there. The outside wall of the condo faces south and gets

really quite hot. My electric bills generally range from 800-1,400 baht

depending on the time of year. Well worth the price to stay comfortable.

Isn't it amazing that a debt of 8 million baht has quadrupled to 36 million baht? Apparently these benevolent dentists who lent the money charged a not so benevolent interest rate, which may be considered usury in the United States. Sounds like these 4 dentists saw this loan as a pot of gold investment rather than one to help a budding talent.

Over twenty years compounded roughly 9% interest. Hardly usury.

  7. Plenty of detailed  info if you use the search window.

    But the answers are.

1/ Do it yourself. Super easy. I printed the forms out in

advance and filled them in before I got to the Thai consulate.

In at 10 am, out in 3 minutes, picked up my passport next

afternoon at 2 pm. 60 seconds in and out.

2/ Take a taxi, super cheap, your hotel will call/flag on down for you

The cost will be about 4 dollars from district 1

Use Vina Sun from the airport. They use the meter and are

    both honest and reliable.

3/ Depends on you nationality. I have a UK passport so I

got a 2 week visa on arrival/visa exempt entry at no charge.

Many European countries get the same. If you are staying longer

than two weeks you will have to get a visa.
