  1. I would avoid adding copper to a pool. My pool buider added copper to my pool just after completion and it caused no end of problems with copper deposits in the grout. Thankfully the copper is mostly gone now. It's also copper in the water that turns blonde hair green, not chlorine. The best way to avoid algae is to make sure your pool is properly chlorinated.

  2. A chlorine shock product is a bit of a misnomer. Shocking is process carried out by adding much more regular chlorine than normal and then holding it higher until the process is complete.

Liquid chlorine adds virtually nothing to the water other than chlorine. If your pool is outside, CYA will most certainly be required to prevent the chlorine being lost to sunlight. Probably needs to be in the range 60 - 80 ppm here in Thailand, although as you have a cover, you can reduce this significantly. Indoor pools do not normally need CYA. CYA can be bought separately or added as part of stabilised chlorine (ie Trichlor tabs or granules.). Once the correct CYA level is reached, use of these products should be stopped until the CYA level falls.

You're right, pool shops have all sorts of chemicals they want to sell you. But all you normally need is:

    Liquid chlorine

    Cyanuric acid

    Hydrochloric Acid to lower pH

    Soda Ash to raise pH

Sodium BiCarb to raise total alkalinty

  3. Do not use "House Hold Bleach!" Wrong chemical. \

You can shock the pool simply using either liquid chlorine (not bleach) or power, All shocking is doing is over chlorinating your pool. You really do not need too much. It can damage the lining and seals in the water pump if you are too aggressive.

Bleach is liquid chlorine. If buying bleach in a supermarket, buy the unscented version. Having said that, I have never seen bleach in a supermarket here in Thailand. All the toilet cleaning products are like "Duck" and based on hydrochloric acid.

I buy 10% liquid chlorine at Mr Pool in Jomtien. B400 for 20 litres. Using liquid chlorine is pH neutral. Liquid chlorine does not contain cyanuric acid (CYA). Trichlor tabs will lower your pH and increase your CYA.

  4. Update....since last post above...I have only had to add chlorine once, 2 days ago.

The water is still crystal clear and The PH stays at around 6.8, which is perfect for the fibreglass pool I have.

I have the details if you wish to look into one of these Ionizers, which NASA use for the astro's i believe.

    Happy swimming

Why the sudden need for chlorine?

  5. Had a marketing email today:

"Thomson Airways will launch a weekly service from Gatwick to the popular Thai resort in November 2013, with both Thomson and First Choice offering holidays that include travel on the ground-breaking aircraft.

No other tour operator or airline currently offers direct flights to Phuket – bookings will open on November 15.

A spokesman for TUI, which owns both Thomson and First Choice, said: “We are thrilled that we are able to offer an exclusive, direct flight to Phuket on the Thomson 787 Dreamliner and we are confident that our customers will love the destination and the hotels we will be operating to.”

  6. I guess that I better be careful. I put bleach in our water supply on a regular basis. One thing to keep in mind is that if it has a strong smell, you put in too much. It doesn't take much.

I agree, sometimes the utility water smells unpleasant, and I like to add a little of the chlorine for teh pool. Isn't that the same as old-fashioned bleach?

Yes. Bleach is sodium hydrochlorite. The liquid I use in my pool is 10% chlorine. Most supermarket bleach is usually weaker. Here in Thailand I have never found bleach in a supermarket.

  7. Hi Allan

Good to hear the pool is going well - seen too many green pools in Thailand. However you say you are using chlorine tablet - I presume these are the 200g Trichlor ones?

The thing to watch out for is a rising cyanuric acid (cya) level. These tabs use cya as the stabiliser and it builds up in the water. You need to aim for 30-50ppm. Once the level goes much over 80 ppm you will get chlorine lock and it won't sanitise the water properly.

You don't say what size your pool is, so as an example I'll give some figure based on my pool which is approx 44000 litre outdoor in-ground.

If I use tabs I need 3 in a floater. Three tabs gives me 12 ppm free chlorine and 7.5 ppm cya total over approx 5 days. so after one month my cya is up to 45ppm already. This doesn't take in to account splash out, backwashing, draining to waste and topping up all of which dilute the cya a little. So I stopped using tabs some time ago and now use liquid chlorine - my pool shop has sodium hydrochloride at 10% chlorine - I add approx 1 litre per day which gives me 2ppm free chlorine but doesn't increase cya.

  8. It's only qualifying. Race is at Mad Dog and other places tonight.

Yes but can be exciting. I watched it live on a netstream, but whatever you do, don't tell postman pat. He paid to watch it in "glorious HD" but True didn't even put it to air!!

Can I ask what netstream you watched?

  9. Crappy star sports have excelled once again by NOT showing todays qualifying

I wish they would excel all the time like that if it means we get to see it in HD.

Well now I am even more annoyed. Did a search yesterday on Truevisions listings and I could not get a result at all.

  10. Here is a link to the various Happy (pre-paid) mobile data plans.

    http://www.happy.co....mid=368〈=en

Note the 384 Kbps cap on time-based plans. 384 Kbps is 3G service, 2G speeds will be more like ~ 180 Kbps. I assume you have configured your device with the required APN details in order to access 3G where available?

    DTAC/Happy 3G Coverage map: http://www.dtac.co.th/3g/coverage.php

Yes, all configured correctly. As you say, I must be on the 384kbps plan. It's probably fast enough for what I need.

Just wondered what speeds people are getting on a data plan, rather than timed? Anywhere near 42mbps?
