The site is still down. This was by far my favorite Thai learning site. I've even built programs based on extractions from it. I wish I could buy the entire site on CD. Anyone know how to contact the administrator?

I'll take a flat chested girl over one with man made tits any day.

I don't know what I would have done, from the vantage point of my desk and watching all the major news I would have just sat tight or had my picture taken with one of the soliders, but on the streets with no news it could have seemed pretty insane seeing a bunch of tanks rolling in, even though it seems those tanks have been mostly for show. The person who ran from the tsunami turned out to be smart, the person who ran from this didn't. I guess it's luck of the draw.

If anything the Baht will probably continue to strengthen against the USD. The USD is a total POS!

He could have gone out gracefully he had several chances, but he had to cling to power and insist he was right at all costs. he's lucky the cost wasn't his life. Also he probably knew this was coming.

I think with your language skills your chances are much better than most. I'm not sure exactly what job you could get. But the Fluent Chinese has to be of great value to someone in LOS, of course if you could speak Thai that would be even better.

Does this have any effect on the exchange rate?

Sign her form with YOUR name, this way she and immigration will know it's you who will be doing all the thinking. Immigration and your wife will appreciate this and it may speed things up.

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's replies. Particularly Meadish Sweetball.
I met a Thai girl over the internet, came to visit her thought we loved each other and got married, she came back to live with me in the USA that didn't work out but a second love had emerged. Yep the love of Thailand. Now I love studying Thai, I love the challenge of out smarting the cons and becoming more than a farang on holiday. I do love the women from all walks of Thai life, they are the biggest draw but not the only one. The buddhist attitude, lack of judgement laid back lifestyle and the food these are huge draws as well.
Now I'm living as frugally as I can in the states, just hoping I can figure out the way to make the move. I can also relate to others who have said it fits like a glove, it feels like home, and there are people just as insane as me everywhere. You do feel like you are part of the world in Thailand, at home in California I feel like I'm being brainwashed by TV. Everything seems so much more complicated and pretentious than it needs to be.
I want to wear the shoes I was made to wear and live free as I have always dreamed I could, for me Thailand represents this dream.

You can't post html? If you save the above as an html file this should explain the tones to you. I also attached an excel file.

I love Thailand, The 90% that is right is what draws me in, however I gotta agree "Thai silence" is something you're going to encounter at one point or another. Really you have to have a pretty strong sense of humor and a lot of patience to make it in Thailand, many things are often not what they seem. I don't think it's Thai bashing to notice this phenonmenon or should be maintain a farang silence about it?

I think China-airlines tends to be the cheapest because they have a few years to go before they can be forgiven for their safety record. I've flown them nearly every time and never had a problem. I am a satisfied customer and hopefully after my next flight I'll have enough miles to update to business class. One trick is to get the vegetarian meal. You get served first and it's hard to screw up vegetables.

I am pursuing a telecommuting oppurtunity with my current employer. I've offered to make reasonable concessions if I can work 100% remote. We are working on a big project right now and my prescense is required on site but after this when things stabilize it might happen. I won't know until Late December. This setup is my dream, the ability to live anywhere and not tied to a desk. IF I lived in Thailand even if I had to take a 50% cut, which I won't have to, I'd be living a great life.
I am a portfolio accounting, perfomance analysis system administrator. It isn't what I was originally hired to do, I sort of grew into the role. There are many who are better at finance or technology than me, but not many who know enough of both to do what I do so I have some bargaining power.

There are two common scams, "According to our local culture" or "You don't understand Thai people" They count on you not understanding their culture and filling in the blanks with whatever their greedy hearts desire. That said, I don't think it's 100% a scam, as there are aspects to Thai culture where a male courting a female offers some assurance he is serious, typically when one is pursuing marriage. Now 40,000 is way more assurance than any Thai man would pay and just because you are a Farang doesn't mean you should pay more. Something along the lines of 10,000 might be reasonable, 40k is an insult.

It's my understanding that go-go and bargirls are tested for HIV once a month. I realize this is not fail safe and no excuse not to use a condom but I think the risk of going with a girl who is not a freelancer is not as dangerous as you say.

Rikker, you are a god mate. I have been trying to get that sound for nearly 2 years now and have never been able to make every time i try. Sometimes i could and other times i could not. As soon as i read your explanation i had it and can now get it every time. A little bit of practice and i know it will become natural.
Thanks for that, i think this is the sound most westeners have a problem with when learning Thai and no book or person has ever been able to explain it to me.
Your explanation was first class.
Thanks again.
Noodles.
Same here! I have a Thai co worker I've been trying to say words with ง to for 2 years as a test if I can pronounce ง I try to say งง, everytime he has a laugh and says no. For the first time in 2 years I said it and he said yes at long last. For me the bit about how you block air when saying "go" was most helpful.
Bobcat as far as ด and ต goes this is my understanding. Most likely you can say ด just fine since it is the same as the English letter D, however ต lik ง doesn't have an exact match as a single letter in English.
Think about where your tongue is when you say D, behind your top teeth. When you say T your tongue is between your teeth. Other things are going on as well but honestly I'm not sure exactly. Anyhow, put your tongue between your teeth as if you were going to say t, but instead try to say the letter D, forcing your tongue to stay between your teeth, you should get a sound that sounds like dt which is the right sound.

Awesome explanation, exactly the information I was looking for. Just to be certain, the soft palate is the area just behind the roof of the mouth the beginning of the back of the throat? So to form the block you have to use the middle/back of your tongue, not the tip.

For example งาน work or ไง
When I say words beginning with ง Thai people say it sounds like น. I have a lot of trouble pronoucning an N and a G sound together. Though I can say words ending in ง just fine for example แพง but as soon as I try to put that ending sound in the front it all goes wrong.
What I'd like are technical details on how to pronounce this. The closest I've come is pulling my tongue back trying to narrow my throat and forcing air out nose, but it comes out like nyahn for for งาน not quite the g sound required.
Before I had trouble pronouncing ต but since it was explained to put your tongue between your teeth and smile a little i can do it. That's the kind of info I'm looking for.
Thanks

I didn't get a response to the email but I'm glad the site is back. I am still interested in purchasing the site on DVD or something. I'd love to install it on my harddrive for rapid searching and audio playback. I think he should offer it for sale to help support himself and the site.
