  1. Thanks for that. I will try asiarooms.com. When I did a search for hotels in Sakon Nakhon, this hotel did come up but when I tried to do a search for their website nothing came up.

    Hi

The palace is nice but a bit out of it...well out of town

If you want to be in town close to Sakhons one and only disco we stay at MJ Majestic slap bang in town centre opposite market was getting a bit in need of a coat of paint last time we were there but it was ok and may have been painted now. Decent restaurant. Good restaurant nearby 'Green Corner' I think. Has english food as well as all thai stuff.

Alternatively if you dont want to be central just cheap and clean head out on the Udon Thani highway, just before you reach Don Mafai (about 10 miles) theres a lovely little motel on the right of the highway opposite a 7/11 absolutely nothing to do out there but very cheap and very clean detatched bungalows round a small lake. Korean owned I think. About 200 yards further up the highway also on the right just b4 you turn into Don Mafai theres the best restaurant I have ever been in Thailand...called something 'Kung' Little huts in a lake I feed the entire family there for about £15 ! Odd its in the middle of nowhere but its superb.

we will be there from about 1/11/07

  2. Ooi..for a farang male may be. But as a thai female, no love lost for me at all.

I have been living in the states for many years now and found Thailand to be only one of those good vacationing spots that's all. Let's just say I now see Thailand in a different light.

It's funny that, cos my mrs is the same. We just got back to the uk, after having 3 weeks in Thailand, she was ready to come home but i didn't want to leave at all. Every trip, she needs less and less time in Thailand. As long as she gets to see her family, she is happy.

She has lived with me in the uk for about 2 years now and has a good set of friends here. What worries me is that, i want to retire to Thailand but i have a feeling she won't want to live there again full time. Oh well, cross that bridge in about 10 years or less!!

Bojangles, good posting. May I ask how did your gf react upon first settling in the UK? I am preparing for this now, researching visa info for us and also trying to re-adjust my mindset in preperation for going back to England and taking care of the both of us. I ask as I want to make it comfortable for her, as I know she will miss her home, family, culture and all the rest inbetween. It feels like we both are going to be in the realm of culture shock, but I have to be realistic about going home, as I found it difficult/failed to get a good job here in my sector of work here in Thailand, a statement which many can relate to I'm sure.

We are both together here in Thailand preparing the scary task of going to the UK soon and starting afresh, any advice is warmly welcomed.

    Fanx

My wife has been in yorkshire 3 years now and we go back in 4 weeks for a holiday. She is not bothered about going...its just me. I always think that Thailand is in colour and england is in black and white. Actually seeing manchester again really depresses me. Its much harder to be happy here. Yet for some reason I actually look forward to cool nights, footy mates, meaningless chats, when I get back. Have not worked it out yet. Greener grass and all that ? Dunno

Maybe its because I have been in Sakhon Nakhon for 3 weeks !

  3. I live in england with my isan wife

I recently sponsored her sister to come to england for a holiday

Someone told me today that when she arrives at ? UK airport english immigration will insist on me being there to collect her

but I will be away on holiday !

    Is this true ?

    Slight panic !

    Anyone know ?

    Thanks

  4. Playing as Maleehuanna (there were some legal issues over who had use of the name, now resolved I suppose) on 21 September at Baan Khon Thai on Theparak Road, Samrong - almost right on the Theparak-Srinakharin crossroads. It's not that small but will probably be pretty full.

Scratch that - just read your post properly, doesn't help you.

Anyway, you'll find him playing under the Maleehuanna name these days and a couple of albums have come out as Maleehuanna since the (very messy) split.

    Thanks for trying to help

if you do hear of any later dates please let me know

will meet you there and buy you a drink or 10 !

  5. :o

    ok my last attempt

am coming to thailand on 27/10/07 for 3 weeks and will give anything to see Maleehuana

I believe the band has split but the singer is still doing small gigs in 'songs for life' bars

they tend to be badly advertised and very difficult to track down

I will arrange my hols around any dates as I have no firm plans for my time there

Please if anyone can help or even better put me in touch with the singer or his agents I will be so grateful

Thank you so much if you can help

  6. NHS will provide Hep A for free and at my local surgery they happily give the combined Hep A+B for free as well so just ask for the combination shot.

The combined vaccine is called "Twinrix" if you need to ask for it by name.

Let me get this straight you suggest I walk into a bar in khao san and ask if there are any Twinks for sale ??!! :o

  7. Relax!

I live near Khon Kaen in a small village since 15 years. No malaria here. No malaria in Isarn at all. There is dengue fewer, which is as dangerous as malaria. But there is nothing against it. And your chances to get dengue fewer are not better than to win the lottery while in holidays in Isarn.

Use mosquito nets at night, repellent in the evening and cover your arms and legs and you will be 100% save.

    Regards

    Thedi

PS: in the 15 years I was bitten by many mosquitoes, but I never got malaria or dengue fewer. Neither did my wife (since 53 years in Isarn) nor our daughter (since 13 years here). BTW: we do not keep to the covered arm and leg rule, my wife refuses repellants because they stink. But we do use mosquito screens on our bedroom windows.

WOW I went to bed and got 25 great pieces of advice. You have all restored my faith in human nature. I suspect that there is more useful info here than my practice nurse can get from her book. I'm off to work now, its 8 o clock will read all this in my lunch break.

    Thanks you are all great.

  8. Presume your talking doxycyclin. Probably a bit cheaper, not by much, but almost no authority would recommend it for the average journey, just because your heading into a Thai border area doesn't indicate a need though you might want to consider it if your going to spend much time in the rough or a village. But if your going to do that your probably just as much at risk of Japanese Encephalitis , just as nasty.....and the jabs are expensive. Cover up.

is very rural where family live but we will only be there a few days rest of time rayong/samet/pattaya

when in sakhon nakhon we stay in hotels not in the village

    yes doxycyclin

sure about cost thought a few hundred baht ! naive me never bought there b4

have to be honest not bothered b4

have heard Jap E risk, is rice fields area, health authority say only jab for JE if staying in rural area 1 month or more

into bargain have thai kids age 8 and 6 been in uk 2 years and we havent a clue what they have been jabbed for !

    ??!!??

  9. There is a HomePro, and they just opened a Homemart, about 1/4 kilometer from Lotus, on the same side of the street. HomePro, if you are on Highway 22 (same road Lotus is on) coming from the airport, when you get into town the road makes a sharp right hand turn. This is where you would make a "U" turn if you where going back to Lotus. After you make the right hand turn go start into town. Follow that road past the bus station untill it dead ends. You can only turn right or left, turn right. Homepro is on that road, about 1 or 2 kilometers on your right.

Shrek, can you tell me where that European bar is?

Pianoman, Where is the Thai-French Beef company?

It is a Quiet town and not much in nightlife. But life is slow there and I like that. When I need night life, It's a quick flight to Bangkok or a couple hour drive to Udon Thani, and I'm good for awhile. For a slower pace, it's a nice town.

Watch out for the DOG MEAT! :o

ok will try and describe how i ended up walking past it...was 2 years ago and was empty so no promises

when you get to the sharp right turn just past lotus (coming from the airport towards town). instead of turning right to go into town go straight on. I was looking for the thai air booking office, walked on there maybe 0.5 km then took a right, the booking office was on the right. That road drops down a gradual hill for about 1 km comes out near the market. bar was on the left (coming towards town)fairly near the top of the hill I think.

Restaurant is the green corner but you will no doubt know that place

We will be in Don Mafai

Will be there on 29/10 email me your email address will buy you a beer

    [email protected]

also pianoman me too where is the thai french beef company ? Never seen good meat east of udon

the road where you go straight on after lotus...seem to think the prison was up there on the left...past that then turn right...thai air booking office on right....european bar very near on other side of road

  11. A few years ago i took an Isaan holiday, and one of the towns i enjoyed was Sakon Nakhorn.

    Questions:

    Many frarang live there?

    Is there a superstore there?

    internet connection ok?

    any other info be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi

My wife is from Sn we've been over in the uk for nearly 3 years now, and I have stayed with her family several times in SN, actually in a village about 10 miles west of town.

As above theres a Lotus and a new supermarket in the town centre.

Town is pretty quiet, nightlife I think restricted to the Golden Pond which is a good outdoor restaurant and Night club full of thai kids open till all hours. Theres also a very good restaurant in town...the Green ? something near the market. I have yet to meet an English guy in SN but have met a few Scandinavians. Its quiet up there you have to be able to handle nothing happening and being the centre of attention every time you leave the house!

We have bought land west of town not far from the airport, cheapish at about £2k, will build later on it.

I am told there are english guys there and a walked past a European bar last time just north of the town centre about half mile out of town, german I think, so there must be some locals.

Primitive, never found good meat etc easy to find, but wonderful people and a very slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow way of life !!!

maybe see you there one day

  12. I have had an aquarium for a while and my fish never last too long. Can someone suggest a way to keep them swimming for longer as my wife is getting upset. I know nothing about them (fish not wives, then again???) and would like some pointers.

turn the tank the other way up ?

really sorry to be flippant but I suspect you are just about to be bombarded with funnies.....

  14. i heard thai nationals without a passport can just use thai ID card.

well they can but you must apply for it!

as you get to the border there is a little shop on your left for thai people he will type out a letter for the thai and then they take it get it stamped with a photo everything done 200 bhat.

now an earlier post says 5 days, we were issued 3 days, dont know why but 3 was enough anyway!

good luck and hey try that laos beer (beer laos) its very nice and does the job!

cheers matey....thats what I was driving at....i have a uk passport and my wife a thai passport with a UK ILR visa in, so I knew we would get visas ok but its only 50 miles or so to Nakhon Phanom from their house and I know for a fact mum and sisters 1 and 2 will jump in as they have never seen laos.

So we can 'just turn up' and get over the border

only 200 baht ? how much is the visa i heard £20 ??

by gum its wet in yorkshire !!

    sheffields been washed away
