We were married in the UK and want to register it (all paperwork ,authenticated and translated) but in Pattaya they want your passport translated and authenticated (not done) any one know an amphur that does not require this ? so we can register our marriage (of 23 years)

I think you will need to make an appointment at the British embassy to get the passport authenticated and then get it translated

why are you in a hurry to marry

as many people here will say:  DON'T !

    you will regret it

because we have spent 2 years getting everything in order for a settlement visa, the affidavit from the British embassy is only valid for 1 month and the TB certificate for my wife only 3.... We just need the marriage certificate and apply for the visa, if we fail to get married before I return to the UK it would mean more expense and time apart.

Statistically, Marriages work out around 50% of the time, I have weighed up the pros and cons and decided I would like to be married.

    My advice: hire an agent

We wanted to marry last Christmas (25.12.18), all papers were correct and nothing forged

1st local amphur: need to call your embassy to confirm documents, on Christmas day all European embassies are closed

Turned up again on 27th, big boss not there, no one authorized to sign excuse

Same day went to amphur 2.....8, excuses were:
    - full, come next year
    - you need an interpreter
    - documents not complete
    - cannot, shut down by DSI and more BS

Hired an agent and got married on 28.12. in a small Ket in BKK for 8k฿

Yep, think you're right. Will get married at Don Muang Amphur on the 22nd for 6KB using the agent that did our documents for us. Leaves us 2 days to get the visa application in... if we can get an interview..

'A lot of documents'. Which documents were not properly translated and certified?

All documents were correct and certified correctly, but they still require to send them to Bangkok and wait for their return before marrying Thai/foreign couples... with a very vague timeframe for their return

OP, if Banglamung is finding something wrong with the documents then any other ampher would probably find the same problems. If all documents are MFA certified, that is the proof of not being a forgery etc. Are you perhaps missing a required document, not all documents are certified ? (divorce doc maybe ?)

You mention "new rules", are the new rules that documents need to be certified 2 times by MFA ?

No problems were found with the documents and none were missing, she said we had all the correct documents. But now they send all documents to Bangkok and have to wait for their return before they will marry foreign/thai couples... She didn't say where she was sending them. My Thai gf has been on the phone and apparently, this will be the norm at all amphurs going forward with only Bang Rak and Don Muang using the old system.

We are trying to get in at her local amphur in Bo Thong, Chonburi but the boss man is not available.

You did have the embassy free to marry paper translated and registered as Thai legal document by Thai MFA?  It only takes a phone call to confirm real.  Don't recall any other paperwork being required (but we were not married previously).  Have you tried Bang Rak in Bangkok?  They marry many and believe if you have the paperwork they go by the numbers.

yes everything done by the book, affidavit from British embassy and a certified copy of passport, both translated and certified by MFA in Bangkok... absolutely no reason that Bang Lamung should not accept them. Bang Rak is an option but they will only do 8 foreign/thai marriages a day, and guess who those 8 are? the 8 with agents. Still, maybe the only option.

Ideally I dont want to go back to Bangkok until after songkran hence picking Bang Lamung amphur

Are you foreign/foreign or foreign/Thai?  That "we" only have two weeks left in Thailand begs the question.  Might make a difference and explanation of new rules might also be useful for responders.

Im from the UK marrying a Thai Lady. The plan was to stay in Thailand for 30 days, acquire all the correct paperwork in Bangkok and then marry at Bang Lamung today. We got our paperwork back from Bangkok yesterday and had already contacted the Amphur who said just turn up, no appointment needed. At the Amphur today we were told that a lot of documents are forgeries and they would need to send them back to Bangkok to confirm they were real. We asked how long this would take and were told, maybe 1 week, maybe 1 month, maybe 3. I need to return to the UK on the 25th of April (and amphurs will be closed for songkran) and we were hoping to have the marriage certificates by the 20th so we could go to Bangkok and apply for a settlement visa for my wife.

It seems that currently all amphurs are working to different rules and the only option is to pay an agent 7-10k. Once an agent is employed the rules seem to change agaian, go figure!. I don't really want to return to Bangkok and pay an agent but it may be our only option.

I thought there was consistency across all systems here in Thailand. So some places are easier to get married, Visa, and open a bank account?  Hmmm.

We went today to Bang Lamung, with the MFA documents and certified passport copies, and all translations and were told we could have to wait upto 3 months.... it's a lottery and if you're trying to synchronize with a visa application forget it.

Thinking marrying in England is worth the extra expense now

  9. Well, things have changed at Bang Lamung, we went today and were told as there are so many forged documents now they will not do marriage the same day. When we asked how long we will have to wait we were told, maybe 1 week, maybe 1 month, maybe 3.... So, seriously reconsider marrying in Bang Lamung unless time is not an issue for you.

60 Euros for 90 days + proof of medical insurance. UK gives you 6 months, free emergency treatment. Higher price is justified.

    ????

where does it say UK gives you free emergency treatment???... my wife is currently here on a visit visa and her emergency treatment cost over £300.

UK visas are blatant profiteering, verging on robbery

  11. UK Spouse visa application:

I am in the final run up to my wife's spouse visa application but still can not find a clear answer to what documents are needed in Bangkok.

I thought she just needed the following list:

    Printed application

    Marriage certificate & translation

    Passport

    Passport photo

    English language test certificate

    TB certificate

Then the supporting documents from me are not needed in Bangkok but get sent by me to Sheffield within 14 days:

    Details of accommodation

    Bank statements

    payslips

    Contract of employment

    Letter from employer

    Letter from landlord

    etc

    am I right or wrong?

I agree the Trinity test seems easier. UKVI should be more consistent especially since they have awarded IELTS the global testing rights. It surprises me that they still allow an easier option for UK based candidates. It doesn't seem in line with their generally hostile environment for immigrants. It would think there's a good chance Trinity's contract may not be renewed.

As you know, I am involved with IELTS testing here in Bangkok, and can assure you the candidates are rated independently and if they have different abilities it usually benefits the stronger candidate.

I thought it was odd too that the tests were so different. I'm not sure I agree with you on rating the candidates.

  13. The element with the least forethought is having to show an ability to converse in English with a candidate who may not be able to speak English. My partner was teamed up with a lady who was on her 4th attempt - the level of stupidity here is astounding. When she then went on to sit the GESE test in the UK she only had to talk with the examiner (who by her position we can assume speaks English) and she passed first time.

Not only that, the language used in the GESE test was the sort of conversations you would expect to have in day to day life, whilst the IELTS tests was expecting my Thai gf to have a conversation about mountain climbing in Austria. If the GESE test is an option take it.

An update on this. The decision was made they say on 30th January but I didn't receive notification until 4th February.
Unfortunately they refused it. Allegedly it's because I didn't submit P60's etc but I don't see how this is possible as I showed bank statements that more than covered the minimum amount of savings needed.
Really hacked off now that it took so long and then for them to refuse it.

are you saying you were refused on the financial requirement but are sure you meet it through savings?

The first visa application failed as it included lots of emotion and information that the ECO didn't need to know and also repetition. The second application contained coherent reasons why Ket should get the visa without the waffle.

now you know what ECO's were thinking... ?

In the field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people of low ability have illusory superiority and mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. The cognitive bias of illusory superiority comes from the inability of low-ability people to recognize their lack of ability. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, low-ability people cannot objectively evaluate their competence or incompetence

Thank you for your reply rasg. i thought as much.

Is there anyone out there who has been in a similar situation to me and has had a successful application?

My train of thought was that i have such strong evidence of being in a genuine relationship that we would not want to jeopardise our future and any subsequent visa applications by her not returning.

Sat on the sofa with my Thai gf (soon to be wife) reading your post, she is on her second visit visa both were for 6 months. She had no job, income, assets or children in Thailand to return too but has had 2 applications accepted and 1 refused (her first application). So it is possible to get a visa under most circumstances but never guaranteed, the reason to return elements is often a case of working with what you have and delivering a convincing argument in your supporting documents, avoid telling any lies and just be prepared to apply again if you receive a refusal. Often in cases such as yours a refusal opens the door for an application to be accepted, they have to give you their reason for a refusal which you can then address in your second application.

My gf's first application was refused as her only income was money I was sending and she had no strong financial ties to Thailand. In her second application her situation was identical but a rewording of the supporting letter was enough to get her through.... was it the supporting letter that got her through? was it because our perseverance gave the application more credibility, was it just luck of the draw with the ECO processing the application?.... you never know.

    Good luck with it!

I would also be interested in current processing times.

A friend is hoping that he will fall into the "95% in 12 weeks" category.

I heard that the performance figures are based on a random sample of applications rather than ALL applications....My Thai wife has heard a lot of horror stories from the facebook group she is a member of, who knows what to believe
