  1. Assuming the idea of this forum is to offer advice then I stand by what I said. If the idea is to show how smart we all are and how dumb others can be then I apologise.

Believe it or not, this thread isn't about you.

Let's hope the OP provides an update about how his Thai girlfriend did go about opening a company bank account etc. after all the advice, suggestions and perspectives that were offered. After all, if people want others to advise, it's only fair they share information about the outcome to help others in the future.

  2. It is a fundamental mistake to separate any group from the citizenry as a whole and assign them "special" rights, or for that matter special restrictions. All should have human rights, and those rights should be clearly defined; adequately represented in the law; then equally, fairly and strictly enforced across gender, ethnic and class lines. Special categories, special rights, special crimes... There are invariably hidden motives behind advocacy for these distinctions, and "fairness" isn't one of them.

Yep. Men and boys are human beings (yes, really!) and deserve equal human rights. In the West, "rape" is often defined as only coerced penetrative sex, which means women cannot legally rape men or boys!

Boy, 11, fathers child after sex with friend's mum

    http://www.9news.com.au/world/2013/06/15/10/20/auckland-boy-fathers-child-after-sex-with-friend-s-mum

"An 11-year-old Auckland boy fathered a child after having sex with a school friend's 36-year-old mother."

"Present legislation stipulates the crime of rape applies only when men force sex. Both carry a maximum sentence of 20 years but only men can be charged with rape. In contrast, women who force an unwilling partner to have sex face charges of sexual violation."

Now, a 36-year-old MAN "has sex" with an 11-year-old girl and gets her pregnant? People would form lynch mobs!

Female teacher who sought sex with 10-year-old boy walks free

    http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/female-teacher-who-sought-sex-with-10yearold-boy-walks-free-20141009-113hlz.html

If a man "sought sex" with a 10-year-old girl, it would be ATTEMPTED RAPE, he'd be registered as a paedophile and sex offender FOR LIFE, and IMPRISONED

Look how these stories are reported. She "sought sex" or a "relationship" with boys or male minors. No, these women attempted to rape or actually raped children and minors.

Men typically serve 33% more time in prison for the SAME crime as women in the West. Don't see many feminists crying about "prison sentence inequality", or a "rape culture" that serves as cover for female paedophiles and rapists and is used only to demonise men. ("Women can't rape! Only men rape!")

I would love women in the West to be held to the same standard as men, and be treated like adults, not as children or as mentally handicapped. Equal rights, equal responsibilities! Equal crime, equal time!

PS To bring this back to Thailand, where the patriarchy rule to oppress and exploit women for the benefit of men, guess who I see every day doing dangerous, filthy, thankless, tedious jobs like construction, clearing sewers, doing backbreaking labour etc.,? 95% of the time, MEN. Stop obsessing about poor WOMEN being exploited or treated unfairly, and just start on focusing on ALL those exploited and downtrodden, regardless of gender!

  3. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

As stated. This is a dead thread. Someone resurrected it, should have looked at starting date.

I was looking for a place with a sunbed myself, and found this relevant discussion at TV. It's only from 2013, and thought perhaps someone had had luck in 2014, perhaps at a hotel catering for foreign tourists who like to tan. Why start a new separate thread about an identical subject? Some threads about sunbeds go back to 2007 or before by comparison.

(YES we know know THAIS don't like to tan. We're not talking about THAIS, so no more snarky irrelevant comments about "failed business model" etc.)

Not trying to promote anything but the solarium and salon is located at Emporium Suites.

Nope. Again, you're not helping by doing random Google searches. I actually already thought of using a search engine! You didn't know for a fact or from experience whether this place had a sunbed. Yes, there are lots of mentions on various hotel and travel websites about "Solarium and tanning salon" at Emporium Suites. However, I actually went there last night to their associated Thann Sanctuary on 7th floor next to their fitness room and asked. "Solarium? Mai mee ka." Do they know any hotels that might have them for "falang" (*cringe*) who like to tan? "Mai saap ka."

(Can chronic time-wasters and search engine keyboard warriors just go somewhere else? You're not helping!)

  4. Put that on the list of failed business models.

Thai people don't want tans ever.

True. However, foreign tourists who come here and find every day overcast and/or wet during the rainy season might want to use a sunbed. It's not inconceivable that a hotel spa might have one for foreigners.

one tanning salon in Bangkok I have read about, is Bangkok Sun Tanning Studio in Phrom Phong or Siam Square area I think...try www.bkksun.com

We know how to use Google. Why do people bother responding with unhelpful answers like this? Did you even check your link? No further info there. However......

    http://www.whois.com/whois/bkksun.com

Obviously a dead website. Nothing for five years.

I find this at TV at lot. Someone asks a question about something, seeking answers from someone with actual experience and knowledge, and TV veterans do random Google searches and post their results, thinking they're "helping". Is it just to get your post counts up?

  5. My favorite is Talking Thai by Paiboon Publishing. But, it might be more than you need.

Not sure how this will help 'a native Thai speaker who is presently in the US who just needs help understanding some of the more difficult English words used in various assignments.' which is what the OP asked for.

I'm glad at least one person actually read my original post!

  6. Hello, some recommendations for a comprehensive (not basic/beginner) English-to-Thai dictionary that can work offline on an iPad. This is for a native Thai speaker who is presently in the US who just needs help understanding some of the more difficult English words used in various assignments. This is not for a tourist who's just arrived in Thailand or learning Thai, so

    1. Talking dictionary NOT necessary

    2. Thai-to-English section NOT wanted

    3. Can't be online only or need a WiFi connection to work, must be an actual iPad app that works offline

I have a hardcopy version of the Oxford River Books English-Thai Dictionary, which would be ideal if it was in the form of an iPad app (although it translates "That's the spirit!" as "Ghost come already" in Thai LOL).

  7. Thanks to everyone for their inputs and explanations. It seems to be some like "You've outdone yourself!" or "Haven't you done well?" in an ironic way. I can't think of a closer English equivalent. Perhaps others can, but these seem good enough.

Well, we also say this this in English "You're too much!" or "It's just too much!" and other variations. If it can be translated into French, I don't see why English would be a huge problem.

  8. Thanks to everyone for their inputs and explanations. It seems to be some like "You've outdone yourself!" or "Haven't you done well?" in an ironic way. I can't think of a closer English equivalent. Perhaps others can, but these seem good enough.

  9. I asked the Mrs (Issarn). The only explanation she can offer is that the word needs to be used in context to have any real meaning. If part of an overall sentence then may be able to give meaning.

Sorry this isn't much help to answer your query but more information required be of further assistance.

Actually, I suspected there wasn't enough context or words to go by. Thanks to your missus.

  10. This is what one of my translators shows --- hope it helps

    • ra.gifโพดโพ เนาะ อ้า เจ้า
    • pôht-poh nór âa jâo
โพดโพ pôht-poh phot-pho (transliteration) เนาะ nór (particle used when seeking agreement or confirmation of a statement) อ้า âa spread out ; stretch out yor yak (ย - the thirty fourth letter of the Thai alphabet) เจ้า jâo prince ; princess ; lord

    owner ; possessor

(prefix used before names of children, inferiors or subordinates)

(a prefix showing something someone does skillfully or has frequently)

Thanks for your help. What does it actually mean? Is there enough to make it into a coherent sentence?

Edit: actually, it looks like you've just run it through some kind of machine translation. Do you think I hadn't done that? (www.Thai2English.com) Machine translation handles only Thai (and not very well), not Isaan. This is not "help". If someone who speaks Isaan could help, I would be very grateful.

  11. It sounds like bargirl English, low class or no class. How many "farang" use the word "farang" to each other in everyday conversation? Do you ever see Bangkok Post or The Nation give news stories headlines like "Farang worry about new visa restrictions"? It definitely has no place in professional news reporting. It should be avoided for the same reason that colloquial or potentially divisive words like "Yank", "gringo", "Pom" or "honky" would not be used.

  12. "Farang" is a Thai word that has no place in an English news headline. It looks amateur. Can Thai Visa just use "foreign/foreigner", or perhaps "Caucasian" if referring to a person of fair or light complexion? "European-looking man" is also very imprecise, excluding "white" Americans, Canadians, Australians etc. as well as olive-skinned southern European and Mediterranean nationalities.

  13. I've decided to ditch the "run XP and 8 simultaneously under Virtual Machine" idea. I have a second low-end all-in-one (Lenovo also with Intel Atom D525) with 2Gb I'll just upgrade to Windows 8 and install Office 2013 and Chrome on. Once I've synced bookmarks, tweaked the new setup and I'm used to the new interface, I'll use that as a temporary workstation while I upgrade my normal computer with 4Gb.

Now, the Intel Atom D525 is apparently dual-core with 64-bit "instruction set" and is "Intel® 64" ready according to http://ark.intel.com/products/49490 So, when the time comes to upgrade my 4Gb computer, should I install 64-bit version of Windows 8 and 64-bit version of everything? I want to use Adobe Photoshop and InDesign/Illustrator but only for basic DTP stuff, nothing commercial grade.
(Yes, upgrading to an octo-core i9 with mega-extreme-hyper-threading and bazillion Gb RAM or a Mac Pro Plus Max would be better, no, don't have the budget.)

Maybe have a read of this www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/506308-hackintosh/?pid=4783986#entry4783986

Not a 100% true Mac but then nor is the price Hackintosh, if you do a search appears a number of people here will build you a good system for 25 - 30,000 baht... just an idea ?

Thanks for the thought but I've made it pretty clear I have no budget for a new system right now. I spent what I had (or at least the maximum I'm willing to spend on a 4-year-old computer) on the 4Gb RAM. Now I just need some advice on whether to install 32- or 64-bit software to make maximum use of my existing set-up. Despite being underpowered/outdated/obsolete by today's standards, my PC still quite functional and useful for 99% of my daily tasks.
