Hi Jimmy, Clash of Clans builds a good community in the clan. So we enjoy the game, but can chat about other stuff as well. It helps having something else in common apart from the game. In our case it is Thailand.
We are also developing our social network:

I had my latex mattress delivered from Latex Innovations, one of the sponsors here.
I am very happy with it as I like soft mattresses

My 79 yr old mother has dementia, back in the UK. I spend 2 months a year there supporting her. The rest of the time, the burden rests with my brother, who is busy with work and family
Social Services are doing everything to keep her in her own home, providing 3 visits per day to administer meds and endure that she eats a hot meal. The point will come when she needs to go into a home, which really scares her.
I have considered bringing her out here, to live in an 2 bed apartment nearby with a live-in nurse, so that I could visit her everyday.
I have considered the medical expenses, but think that at her stage of life it is about making her comfortable. It makes little sense to put her through chemo etc
Has anyone had experience of doing something similar?

Better than average movies are hard to come by in pattaya on the big screen, however i am STILL somewhat game, limited time offer only.
Doesn't have to be the big screen, could be on the small screen. In my case, not so small.
I am sure many of us have extensive movie collections.

Bandersnatch, how were they able to tell that the money was remitted in Baht?. For reasons beyond my control I currently have more money than I want in Thailand and it was sent as Baht. I don't really relish having to send in another *00k when I become eligible for Retirement Visa in a few months.
Would be interested in knowing if this is a one off/one officers criteria in terms of checking or if it is the general experience. Also if others can confirm that they will accept a further 800k transfer without additional seasoning - maybe best idea is to get bank letter confirming existing funds were sent from abroad and if they do not accept because not converted to THB in Thailand then send the additional 800k
The notification of transfer from SCB showed the remitting currency (this was not a letter from the bank)
I had gone to Bangkok's Chaeng Wattana immigration office the previous day to confirm exactly what documents were required to convert my tourist visa to retirement. Proof of foreign transfer was not on the list of requirements. In my case they did not need the second transfer in HK$ seasoned.

When I did my first extension for retirement in Bangkok, I came with seasoned funds and a letter dated that day from SCB confirming ฿800,000 baht in my account. However, I was asked for proof that I had remitted the funds from abroad - the way you do if you are buying a condo. I went back to SCB who gave me a letter confirming ฿800,000 transferred from my Hong Kong HSBC bank. Back at immigration, I was told that this was unacceptable as I had transferred Thai Baht and that this did not count as a foreign remittance. I had a multi currency account in Hong Kong and figured it was better to know the conversion rate in Hong Kong rather that wait in hope for a better rate from SCB when the funds arrived. I did another transfer from Hong Kong, this time in HK$ and this time the notice of transfer paper was accepted, although it clearly had nothing to do with the funds in my SCB sitting there for 2 months.
I have just done my second extension this time in Jomtien, and nobody asked to see a proof of remittance.
I have read many posts on visas and have never seen anyone asked for proof of foreign remission. I was worried that I would have to bring a fresh ฿800,000 in each year.

I bought a DVD from Amazon and the import duty was 70% of the purchase price. They charged me duty, storage etc and then tax on the total. It all totalled 70%.

Everything is dirt cheap here compared to UK! Except for imported goods...
I came over from london.
Rent is now £200 per month compared to £900.
Meal with drinks in a restaurant £10 compared to £30.
Taxi £1-2 compared with £5-10.
Pint of Beer is £1.40 compared to £4.50.
I think people forget who have been here a while that UK prices rocket too...
whats the minimum wage in london ? little bit more than 300bht.a day.
Closer to ฿300 an hour

Guess everyone should have bought a house or condo in thailand years ago
I know there is a lot of negativity about buying property on this forum, but having bought I don't have to worry about bringing in money to pay for rent. I even bought a second property to rent out, which gives me more Thai Baht. In retirement you want to minimise your exposure to risk and currency fluctuation is potentially a big risk. Before anyone points out the risk of not being able to rent out my second condo - that is a possibility, but it has not been a problem for the last four years.

"Or not" for me. I didn't retire early so I could eat and drink myself into an early grave. Taking care of yourself takes time and now I have the time to do it. I consider it my new job.

I put my car in the wife's name as there was a ฿100,000 discount that I would loose if it was in my name. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/497908-bt100000-excise-tax-cut-for-first-car-buyers/

Like others on this topic, I am looking for a combination of insurance and self-insurance, with the insurance cover for just the higher cost items, but when I looked on the Bupa site http://www.bupa.co.th/en/individuals/health-insurance/compare-insurance-plan.aspx?cgid=6 the Thailand only insurance just covers ฿600,000 a year.

Managed to meet up with highbrows for a game today.
We played at Suan Rot Fai สวนรถไฟ which is about 10 minutes walk from MRT Phahon Yothin.
I have attached a map, but basically you leave MRT Phahon Yothin at exit 3 and cross the small park, which is basically a roundabout.
Then cross the footbridge. You come out at the corner of SRT Park. Turn right with the park on your left and go around the corner. You will see the tennis courts across the road, but you have to keep walking until you see the bridge.
The courts cost 35 baht per hour and are in average condition. They were not busy on a Sunday afternoon. They have a tennis wall there.

I am keen to play tennis. Huay Kwang area.
Probably rank myself as a level 4

I arrived last Friday 9pm and flew out Sunday 4pm and it was very quick. The single line with staff directing people to each desk really seemed to work. On the way out I was waved through to the Thai only desk - first time that has every happened.
