  1. Having witnessed a Tefl trainer trying to convey to a class of 10 yr olds that the verb being used was in the "past " tense , by playing a charade of pointing over his shoulder for 10 mins ...and only succeeding in making them think he was impersonating the safety demo of an airline stewardess..............my personal conclusion was that it would have been far more beneficial to all concerned, if he'd simply used very basic Thai to make the point !

Still ,it used up a good part of the lesson !

Now this is true. And funny. I mean really funny if you think about it.

You have a twisted sense of humor,

but very well, so do i laugh.png

  2. no interest in learning thai, none whatsoever.

Me neither, but it was none the less rewarding & entertaining for as long as i had a competent teacher, nearly 2 years, and i would have kept studying IF i still had a competent teacher.

but alas, she was replaced with teachers that couldn't explain in a language i could understand, so it became pointless

    I love your posts, I really dobiggrin.png

So, let's get this straight - you have no interest in learning Thai but you paid for a teacher for 2 years to teach you Thai. A competent one? But you still can't speak it after that long!

I paid for ED visa, didnt plan to study but was captured.

Now it's a couple of years since i used thai at all, and have forgotten everything

  4. I've met dozens of TEFL wannabe teachers and enjoy their presence a lot more than old farts.

I still won't pay a single baht for a monolingual teacher if i want to learn a language tho.

That's maybe reason you still need to learn. Im content with my fluency in Thai and have never paid a single baht. Being immersed in the language was my motivation to learn.

    Exactly !

If you need a teacher, you need someone capable of explaining in a language you comprehend,

if you don't need explanation, why waste a single baht on a teacher ?

but, 'content with my fluency in thai' dont really say much,

i've met dozens of falangs that are content with their ability to say 'top salop salai' + 'pet mak mak'

  5. My gf has considered it too salty on more than one occasion,

i think you should drink more & take buddhas general advice for it:

there should be both salty & sour in life.

btw you havnt learn to pronounce salt, or glua, yet, it is quite difficult,

if i could type a german u in glua, i would

  6. people treat you how you let them treat you.

That's right. Compared to my ex-girlfriends, I know I've let things go too easily with her. I guess it's cause of her financial background and how much she struggles.

usually what i see here is the girl threaten to leave when they dont get something, next thing the men are on there knees begging for them to stay and giving them what they want and more.

its a gradual process of control, they are good at it, dont allow it, its common mostly amongst men who never really had a decent looking bird outside of thailand.

Look, if she loved you, she would show it, straight up, thais that really love do.

    Amen

  7. say: mai aow glua loey

You would not say mai aow, they would probably be confused and not know what you are talking about, you would say mai sai.

I'm not sure that Thais actually use much salt in their cooking.

They may be adding Rod dee powder and that has a lot of salt and fish sauce is salty.

You are right, and I am on my last beer

  8. I wonder why the sidestand on my chopper is too short ?

and what to do about it ?

the leaning means it needs almost twice the parking space

    Change to smaller wheels thumbsup.gif

    Side Stand on left =

Drive on left so when parked, leans away from traffic.

(Unless you park facing oncoming traffic.)

Tried that, unwillingly when my mechanic put an inch smaller wheel on the back tire,

with the result that my chopper needed 3500 rpm at 90 km/h,

as opposed to 3000 rpm with the appropriate size.

net result - poor fuel economy

It isn't entirely necessary to have any teacher at all, if there is interest & time.

And i think a 'teacher' that can't actually explain anything that i can comprehend is about as useful as having no teacher at all, i may as well buy a dictionary and ask my gf to hold up a pen, i'll work it out later rather than sooner.

    Sorry what's a translation book?

    You mean like this?

    ChiangMaiKelly!

This is a disgrace to the Thai people!

    'Ai lie dis sa-tai'

This is not the Thai culture!

Be grateful she didnt say: 'Ai hia lia hii ni' wai2.gif

No doubt no monolingual teacher can understand, but i won't explain thumbsup.gif

  10. I'm enjoying this thread but it seems to contain a lot of posts where non-teachers are lecturing to active teachers on how we should teach .

Is it me or isn't that a bit daft?

Altho i did some minor teaching,

my aversion to monolingual teachers stem from my experience as a student.

Going from a teacher that could explain my nosy questions in a language i could appreciate in great detail, (more than i even asked for with noun etc)

and then replaced with teachers that at best could hold up a pen and say 'ni alai'# <deleted> ?

the incompetent teachers couldn't explain squat, best they could do was the

'repeat after me even tho you have no clue, and i have no clue how to explain either' junk

    # ni alai = whats this, in case you're monolingual

I don't really want to get into this too much but I can't resist commenting on the idea that a bilingual teacher ia necessary as it defies both common sense and my experience

To clarify: I don't mean to say that the student's original language should never be used or could never be helpful. But it's self-evidently false that it's required
