  1. Narz in soi 23 has a trance/progressive house room, a hip hop/R&B/ house room and also a breakbeat/chill out room, not many farang go there and some of the Thai's in the trance room dance with glow sticks, it actually reminds of The Gallery @ Turnmills about 10 to 15 years ago. Some big name DJ's have been there recently, Paul Oakenfold, Ronski Speed, Lisa lashes, I wish I was in BKK now, it's a definitely somewhere I would be on a Friday or Saturday night.

  2. I really don't see what the problem is, why would the Thai's know about Hitler, he never invaded Thailand, the European theatre of war never came to Thailand, but the Pacific theatre of war did came to Thailand and the Japanese army with it.

Whilst Hitler is an evil figure for us in the western world, it's not same in the Asian world, it's why we like Thailand and live there, it's different to our home countries!

please get real. the Nazi war machine left the French & British unable to tend their many colonies. thus, in SE Asia, the Japanese easily ran the British out but allowed French Vichy's to puppet-rule. Many Allied prisoners in work/death camps eg: Kanchanaburi et al. the void Japan filled was to advance the Empire of the Sun.. Axis Germany, Italy & Japan were determined but failed. Italy & Germany were very young nations at that time. Hence, after WW2, the British & French tried to walk back into SE Asia & set up shop. most former colonies said 'no dice' and more hell broke loose such as that of India & Vietnam respectively. aka British Raj & French Indo-China..

I do know my world history, however evil these regimes were, it's in the past and lecturing Thai's about how evil Hitler was is none of our business really. My wife doesn't know about Hitler and the Nazi's, I doubt she cares either, although it might help with her Life in the UK test!

We've been around and around that on other threads for weeks. We can put a certain amount of it down to base ignorance. However, when you plaster it on the wall at your supposed highest quality university, not ONE person even notices that it could possibly be offensive, and then to cap it all off the students actually pose, with arm raised in front of it, it really does beg a question about the level of knowledge of ANYONE within the university.

This is not a cheap burger joint looking for some marketing, this is not a bunch of 12 year olds in a school in Chiangmai. This is supposedly one of the better minds in the country glorifying Hitler. Now of course there is context, and maybe she though it might be a hoot, but I don't see her striking a superman pose either.

Its glorious ignorance, and there is nothing more dangerous in the world than ignorance. It is actually what allowed the whole Nazi thing to happen in the first place. I can understand some people being extremely offended by this. I however find it extremely pitiful that ANYONE in the world can be THAT IGNORANT about something like this, let alone someone supposedly with a "superior" education. If it was a neo-nazi Thai striking a pose on the basis of their views I would have more respect for it than some ditzy student not realising what they are doing. I can handle people with abominable views, I despair when I meet ignorance.

It reflects terribly on the university itself and proves that there are an awful lot of supposedly learned people, who know very very little about the world around them whatsoever running around in this country.

Ironically, if someone had put up a poster of Thaksin, it would probably have been ripped down in a minute.

Most 12 year old's in the UK probably don't know or even care who Hitler was, the second world war ended 68 years ago and will pass from living memory just as the first world war has done so. The this whole Hitler thing in Thailand does not offend me and also it's none of our business how schools are run in Thailand!

  4. What's wrong with listening to house, techno and trance music, I have been since 1988 and I DJ too. I've never been to the Full Moon Party, but went to a Half Moon Party in Chaweng in 2010, very enjoyable!

There's nothing wrong with this music. It is the music of our time.

I think the real issue here is the murders, rapes, drink spikings and young fools who become macho and want to fight after a few drinks. F@@cking embarrassing!

Good point, I've never been to koh phangan, seemed a like a lot of hassle with the dodgy boats and thefts from the accommodation.

I prefer Narz in Bangkok, the progressive house and trance room, it has the feel of The Gallery @ Turnmills in the late 90's and early 2000's, smashing stuff!

  5. She was making notes in Thai in regards to words that she didn't know, I think sentence structure and meaning is what is lacking at the moment. I think it will be best to improve her knowledge over the next few months and then see where we are. I've done the mock test and scored 90% or more in every one, but I like history and politics, if I can bring her up to the level, then explaining the book to her and important dates and figures in British history will not be a problem.

I don't know why the test centre don't give % of the result, it would be more helpful, so I know how many she got right, but she did say it was hard for her and she didn't think that she many correct.

There is enough time left to improve and it she cannot pass the test, there is always FLR to fall back on.

  6. We bought all 3 official LITUK study books and also got the official iPhone app. I wanted to see how my wife would find the test, we did mock tests on the pc and I booked a test for last Friday, 14/06/2013, I waned to see how she would find the test and also to see what level she is at. The test result did not give a score, but simply said that she did not achieve the pass the test, but there were 22 points of revision on the result paper, so I assume that she got a score of 2/24 and a pass is 18/24.

She has found the LITUK books very hard to understand, the language is at a level that is too high for her, I don't think it will be possible for her to pass LITUK by May 2014 or even by the expiry date of August 2014, FLR seems to be the only realistic option. The Trinity GESE Grade 2 (A1 CEFR) that she passed in January 2012 has no expiry date, but I will have to check if this certificate is still accepted or not on the UKBA website.

Further studies like a ESOL course are going to be problematic with her shift rotas, she has no set days off and works 5 days a week, she starts work between 8am and 9am and finishes between 5pm and 6pm, most weekends she is working. I did a TESOL course in Bangkok in December 2010 and I have taught English in Bangkok, so I am teaching ESL level 2/3 to my wife, I'll review the progress in 6 months, but I think she will need another 18 months to understand the LITUK book and then answer the questions.

  7. have not spend more than 90 days outside the United Kingdom in the last 12 months of the three-year period;

Remember in the year you apply only 90 days...3 months.

She's only been here a year and you want to go back?

God you must hate it in the UK! laugh.png

Remember all the financial requirements for ILR and naturalisation.

    RAZZ

Yes, under the old rules and I do find the UK quite dull, dreary and boring! sad.png

  8. I've reading about the eligibility for a UK passport today and it seems that you can spend 270 days out of the UK and still qualify for a UK passport. I think this would be a better option for my wife and still allows us to go back to Thailand for 6 months and come back and wait for the qualifying period of 3 years to expire.

    Residential requirements

In order to demonstrate the residential requirements for naturalisation you need to:

    • have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least three years (this is known as the residential qualifying period); and
    • have been present in the United Kingdom three years before the date of your application; and
    • have not spent more than 270 days outside the United Kingdom during the three-year period; and
    • have not spend more than 90 days outside the United Kingdom in the last 12 months of the three-year period; and
    • have not been in breach of the immigration rules at any stage during the three-year period.
  9. In regards to the ILR and citizenship, I will be going back to Thailand if she secures the ILR visa for anything up to 18 months, I'm not sure how long my wife will stay, as she wishes to obtain a British passport.

I 've explained the different types of visas that will be available to her and the implications of staying outside of the UK with both ILR and FLR.

  10. Thanks 7by7, less than 12 months to go biggrin.png and then I'm free to do what I want, which is to live and work in Thailand for a year again.

I presume the costs will increase in May 2014 for visa applications, so apply in person will be about £1100 next May.

Progress is being made with LITUK, she is taking a test next week, I want her to get use to taking the exam, I doubt she will pass, but it will be a good experience and keep her focused.

... And the rest - it is £1451 at the moment if you apply in person, £1051 by post.

I would recommend doing it by post; my wife's permit came last week and I had applied 6 weeks ago. The only downside is that passport etc is with them for that time, but I thought he turnaround was pretty good. Mind you, for the money one would expect so!

Thankfully she will paying for her visa application, not me, so whether it's £1000 or £1500, that is her up to her!

  12. My wife was granted her settlement visa on 25th May 2012 and she entered the UK on 31st May 2012, we spent 15 days in Thailand during March 2013, when would be the soonest date that we can apply for ILR in person? I read on UKBA's website section for ILR, that you can apply 28 days before the end of the two year qualifying period, would I be correct in saying that she could apply for ILR at UKBA in Croydon on 6th May 2014?

  13. Thanks for your input guys, we will try the Thai version of LITUK first of all and also buy the official updated books from HMSO. It's carrot and stick, she has to study to get the visa she wants or it's a visa the same as she already has, I can only advise, I don't want to be an ogre and bossing someone around!

  14. Thanks for your info 7by7. The problem is mainly me, well, it is me, I would like to spend some time living and working in Thailand again, I don't fancy staying here for another two years with only occasional visits to Thailand, the settlement visa was for wifes benefit to live and work in the UK, but not forever.

I would prefer to obtain the ILR visa and at least we could live in Thailand for a year and then come back to the UK for a year to live and work, and so on, 50/50 UK and Thailand. Is ILR a 10 year visa?

  15. In one year she has done very little studying, I've just bought a LITUK book in Thai, it maybe a little out of date, but it gives her something to read and practise with. Also once a month starting in a couple of weeks time, she will be taking the LITUK test, there is a test centre 8 miles up the road, it will get her use to the test and may even pass by guessing most of it ;-)
