  1. they were not trying to avoid baloons popping dangerous gas since the guard made them explose anyways.

Just a 5'1 85pound midget trying to show whos boss and a fat old bald man getting his ass handed by a 6000 per month guy that was hired to sit down with 0 authority..

quite sad on both sides. But expected from the racist thai who's probably just learned his gf he pickups at 3am @ nana or 6am @ spicey just hit her 5 000th customer this year

I think if the guy set about you with a truncheon there would be a round of applause...........

    What a disgusting post.

so you felt you were well represented in my post? Only reason to get angry. This is the reality of thailand where expats are nowadays.

The only person represented in your post was you. You gave us all an insight into your mind and attitude to Thailand. Not a pretty sight.

Here's some shock news for you too.....yov don't represent the experience of the vast majority of posters here, you don't represent the experience of the vast majority of expats, and you most certainly don!t represent me.

I'm not angry with you, I pity you and you're view of Thailand.

Well said. You represent what i described and im far from it. Now shush wink.png

btw you realize that it was just confirmed that the balloons were not a problem to the security guard as he did not care if he brought half in? He only got beat on because the midget was racist? Criticizing my post just makes you look worse except to your fellow lower class $expat friends.

  2. wishing him a full recovery isn't something you should do. wishing him to live is great but going further you're just asking for a dangerous person to be put back on the road. Hopefully he recovers just enough to not be able to drive ever again. The only way this could of been not his fault is if the car had no lights on which is impossible on a captiva

  3. its funny how your life experience is so little.

My parents were wealthy and having so many handouts for so long definately is something i wish they had not done, i wish they had kicked my ass and told me to gtfo my ass at 16 and gotten a job to pay for EVERYTHING. i would of hated them for a year but in the long run i would probably be an executive sitting at an office getting paid to drink scotch right now.. And mostly the same goes for every other decently wealthy kid i knew. In fact the only one that has a really good work life is the one whos parent taught him to work for himself at age 12. He's my best friend and he already owns an apt building and plenty of other stuff. Hard worker while everyone else is still studying miserably or having shitty average jobs.

But even through that, they still have better life prospect than any kid born in thailand, especially when you consider they're all alive at age 24 which is very hard to do on the roads and schools of thailand.

Again you're just blahblahing on the same crap that means nothing, SECURITY, SAFETY and FUTURE PROSPECT this is what counts for children and this place has 0% of those 3 things.

If you love thailand so much and cant move for your children at least go to a different province.

  4. Lots of places to raise a child in this world. Phuket is doable but its probably one of the highest place that you'd want to live but has most negatives points that are life threatening and you people still want to raise them here

this is nuts.. Phuket is for grown men who can take of themselves and southerners who like to kill people for a cup of sugar. Even the rich people of phuket gtfo when they have kids for the most part. I must know, my friends are taking care of the estate of one of the most prestigious phuket family and when they had kids they left and never came back much and said most of their friends did the same. Education isn't as good and they know first hand how dangerous and full of evil this place is.

every post just looks like a few guys in denial trying to convince themselves that their little 3 street wide paradise is good enough for their child because they are such awesome parents and their kids will turn out to be little nerds with absolutely no rebellious element in them just like daddy. But guess what, most kids turn out normal and learn nothing from their parents after age 12. Only from peers, tv and teachers. A parent's word is only herd as blahblahblah for most kids after that age untill they mature a bit.

  5. its also crazy how the road death and hospitalization #'s dont scare any of you with kids. Theres no way you wont have your teenager get on a bike or car very often. Teenagers still do not have every part of their brain completed, no matter how you teach them life, they still do not understand consequences because the part of the brain is still developing. Their chances of being crippled or dead is what? 600%-1200% higher than back home? Dont really think looking for statistic is needed and they are probably off by a lot since its shameful to thais and thais do not like to be shamed.

  6. No mention on if it was bike gangs or college gangs or what.. Boys will be boys..

Gangs war with ‘swords’ at Saphan Hin

    Phuket Gazette – Thursday, December 6, 2007 5:51:00 PM

SAPHAN HIN: Two gangs each of about 40 teenagers battled with long-bladed weapons, reported as swords, at Saphan Hin about 1 am on Sunday.

In the melee, a 16-year-old died after being struck down while riding his motorbike and a member of the same gang fled his attackers by jumping into Klong Bangyai, but with his right hand severed and his right ear nearly completely cut off.

Phuket City Police Investigator Lt Somchai Nuboon identified the dead youngster as Witthawat Pongsakote, 16. He was on a motorcycle trying to escape a rival gang when he was attacked and fell off his motorbike near Pramahachanok Bridge, across the road from Phuket Vocational College.

Critically wounded to the head, back and arms, he was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he died of blood loss.

A member of the same gang, Somboon Namkaew, 28, was also set upon. He managed to escape his attackers by jumping into Klong Bangyai, from which he was later lifted with great difficulty by Kusoldham Foundation rescue workers.

Somboon’s right hand was severed and his right ear was almost completely cut off. He is now being treated at Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he has been listed as “out of danger” by staff, Lt Somchai said.

“We already questioned Somboon’s fellow gang members and we know the identity of his attackers, who are members of an enemy gang,” he added.

That's nothing....the American schools are where the biggest battles are (and there are plenty more of these)

once or twice a year occurrence in a country with what 500mil people?

vs thais who fight daily and have 50mil people?

  7. lol

    seriously?

Every society has social problems? maybe. But not many society have a problem where students from different school try to KILL each other on a daily basis.

Can you quote any news source to corroborate that claim. Sure there a youth gang killings, but inter school violence/killings - I've never read that... ??

what are you guys nuts? ask anyone whos been to the university or lived next to one, its common occurrence from vocational school to regular schools.

<deleted> my brother in law shot people in those 'wars' and hes no violent person

its in thai newspapers all the time and the only reason they are few deaths per years and only hospitalization is because thais are shitty bomb makers and not very skinny.

  8. Obviously, a degree from a university like this one in Thailand http://www.au.edu/ is internationally recognised. However, you will find many public Thai Universities are not internationally accredited, therefore, a degree from those universities is not worth much, outside of Thailand.

Similarly, an education at a school such as this one http://www.shrewsbur.../home/home.html is also recognised in order to gain admission to a university abroad. However, you will find an education from a public Thai school will not be recognised for overseas university admission. Of course, as mentioned previously, you can "pay up front" to get your child into university in certain countries.

I would hate to think of the cost of sending a child to either one of the above, but there are many wealthy people on Phuket, so, good luck to them.

I guess it would be up to the parents to make a judgement call on whether to send their kid/s to either a fully accredited, or a non-accredited school here. I do not have young children here, so, I do not know if the various International Schools on Phuket are actually internationally accredited and administering an accredited foreign cirriculum, or not.

Yes the British International School does offer the IB diploma which is recognized by universities around the world. (I just copied and pasted the info from there website)

    At BIS in 2010

    • 38 students undertook the IB Diploma, 35 passed the Diploma successfully.
    • Average points obtained was 32 out of a total of 45
    • Average grade obtained was 5 out of 7
    • Highest Diploma points was 43

Didn't even know there was a British International School on Phuket. Just googled it and was impressed with what's on their website. If I had young kids on Phuket, I would have no problem sending them there, based on the information on their website.

    http://www.bisphuket.ac.th/

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how much a year it is to send a child there?

A particular part of their website to take note of is the "Tertiary Desinations" section. It states which countries the graduates of Class 2011 are going to for university.

20k~ usd per year for a 3year old

dont wanna know how much for a 16

also 38 went for the international competency test out of how many hundred? the school is massive.

  9. love this guy. he knows this country is a ****hole but he still fights with his life on the line (no way he doesnt get shot soon) for the animals who did not chose to be living with thais.

How do you donate to his sanctuary? when people ask me for a good place to donate money, that should be perfect as none of the $ goes toward people

  10. HKP, you have openly stated. "I love Phuket" - but will your kids love Phuket? Will you ask them? If they do not like Phuket, what will you do - will you consider moving? If you see them hanging around with the wrong crowd, getting bad grades etc, will you watch them go down hill, just because YOU love Phuket?

The above section of your post is the nail on the head for me. The rest I believe is speculation, guess work, with a lot of worst case scenarios thrown in for good measure.

The bottom line for me is if you are good parents and 100% have your kids best interests as top priority then things will always work out OK.

The question is, if there's a hint that things aren't working out best for your kids are you prepared to jump on the next plane back to the UK, regardless of how much you would rather be in Phuket and regardless of how unhappy it will make you and your wife, and how much worse your life would be. If the answer to that question is yes, (which it has to be) then there shouldn't be a problem.

The kind of parents you are is crucial, and at the risk of sounding arrogant I'm not worried about our abilities in that respect.

If my kids wanted to further their education (I wouldn't try and force them, I'm not one of those people that believe a degree is the be-all and end-all) then the ability to support them financially in Europe (the same as parents would try to do if they were living there anyway) is a must. As is a constant connection with the other half of where they come from.

I don't buy all the lack of culture and music argument, because I always plan for me kids to spend a lot of time in Europe as they're growing up as well, so they as many people have mentioned will be blessed with the best from two different cultures and continents. If financially we would have to be stuck in Phuket and never be able to visit Europe then that could be a key factor in not living here.

HKP, I would be interested to know what you think their employment opportunities will be like, in Thailand, near mum and dad, without a Western uni degree? The trades (hair dresser - electrician etc) pay nothing, as you know. Don't quote me on this, but I think many countries do not recognise trades certificates from Thailand. So, for example, a Thai electrician can not go to the UK and work as an electrician because the UK know he has not been properly trained. Even with a western degree, like I posted earlier, the good jobs go to members of the 10 families who own/run Phuket.

I agree with points you have said in your post, BUT, it's not just about being good parents while they are young, in the family home, it's also about the level of education you place them in and the environment in which they grow up in. These are a little out of your control on Phuket, due to availablity and the touristic nature of the island. In the west, it would be governed by your financial position as to what suburb you live in and what school you can afford to send your kids to.

Are you looking 18 years down the track? Do you want your son/daughter earning 8000 baht a month? A western degree would have to be a must, in order to get a decent job here. (here, meaning Thailand)

It really is a conflict of intrests. On one hand, we have foreigners who have worked hard for many years and retired young, or old, who want to live by the beach on Phuket - on the other hand, children come along and the best education, medical, sport, entertainment and safe enviroment for them is not on Phuket. There in, lays the dilema. Mum and Dad's happiness, versus what's truly best for the kids.

dont know much about the other ones but the small sallon here has a paid worker in it and she was paid on comission.. she averaged 50k baht a month. The owner was making much more. and that was with a 20k baht rent.

there's also about 25 more of them within walkable distance. It's definately one of the smallest.
