  1. It's hardly surprising that in a country without any social welfare system stories such as these are so prevalent.

If someone has no job, no prospects and no food, what are their options ?

Policeman, Soldier, Monk… the first two require no criminal record…..

Thus the Wat is a last resort for many..... most of the many are simply regular folk with a shaved head and gold robes... some of the many are unreformable criminals...

Bullshit. Whenever I come across a Western news item regarding the disgraceful behaviour of some 'Buddhist' monks, I know immediately that these 'monks' are Thai.

Compare the relative wealth of those from poverty stricken Burma, Cambodia, Laos, et al.

IT'S A THAI THING. Even the Thais know that.

  2. Soi dogs.....part of the fun of living in Thailand.......but if you old farts can't handle it, go back to Germany or Sweden or where ever it is you come from.....I'm sure you'll find something to grumble about back home, ......like the rising price of sponge cake or something. thumbsup.gif

    Well said chinook!

In the 10 years I have lived in Thailand, I have never felt seriously threatened by a soi dog. That's more than I can say for the human population, domestic and othehrwise. And even though I have met a few unpleasant people over the years, I wouldn't advocate rounding up whole neighborhoods to be eaten in some neighboring country as a solution.

Well said! I've just returned from my tri daily walking of my two rescued soi dogs and happened to espy an obviously dressed Russian woman (old style dress/big hair - though nothing personal against Russians per se), who, having spotted my dogs happily trotting along the soi started to hide in the bloody shrubbery. 'They don't bite for Chrissakes!' 'I am afraid' she cried. Built like a brick shithouse she was too! 'Some dogs will sense your fear and try to intimidate you, just bloody ignore them!'

I've a feeling there're a LOT of ignorant wusses posting on this subject all too frequently also. Get a grip.

Oh, and by the way. When visiting a friend in PP, he was distraught his Golden Retriever had been nabbed. These people do not differentiate.

  3. 'Ruin the image of Thailand'?! At the end of one of the episodes of Ted Danson's Bored To Death there's always a different song. I've been here a long time but even I had to re-wind to check the first line which goes 'On a ferris wheel on Coney Island you can see more stars than there are prostitutes in Thailand'. This from an American made series and an English band (Magnetic Field, if anyone's interested).

Is this guy being disingenuous or is he merely thick?

  4. Bank

There are now 2 commercial banks on service at the airport which are Thai Military Bank Public Co., Ltd., located at the northern part of international terminal 1, and Bangkok Bank Public Co., Ltd, located on the 2nd floor at the northern part of international terminal 2.

    http://www.travexnet...es/airport.html

And I think Bank of Ayudhya has a sub branch at the bus terminal.

I Googled the airport and it threw up the airport site stating there were 'bank branches' on the third floor of the Western side of the airport?!

Who knows in this ridiculous bloody country. He'll just have to hope that some airport employee with an IQ at least equivalent to that of a bloody amoeba will be able to point him in the right direction/s.

Thanks for bothering to respond anyway.

  5. i do get tired of these smug 'if you can't afford to live here/insure yourself tedious. Should everyone then have the good fortune to be on a fat company pension/lottery winner before they are able to make decisions as to whether to stay in their home countries then? And of course there are many 'life is what happens when you're making plans for other things.

I don't believe 'theblether', for instance, to be a troll. Simply, from what I've seen of his many posts, just a miserable old sod.

  6. First off, again coffee1.gif

Secondly, 'most Thais can't afford to travel'. No. But the disparity between the rich and the poor in this country ensures the much lower percentage, ie, the rich bastards running the show, are the ones able to afford it AND buy land and houses in our more civilised, less discriminatory countries. So a blanket ban on ALL Thais NOT being able to enjoy the same privileges in the West (except for Switzerland, apparently, but who are quite happy to stash illegally acquired loot and stay out of the wars from whence it came), very much in order.

  7. I believe the OP has answered his own question in .26 above.

There's a few things that don't add up, that aside I wish him the best of luck.

Yeah, I'm surprised it's taken this long to wonder how a 34 year old construction worker ended up with, what sounds like, a substantial 'offshore' income ... Win the pools? Rich dead uncle?

  8. Early April Fools day!!!!!!!

The Department of Highways certified that there was no damage to the runways, well did they not certify the runways at Swampy, just before the cracks started to appear!!!

So less damage than earlier estimates, is that because some powers that be are keeping an eye on attempted corruption, so some contracts ear marked for big backhanders have been scared off????

Talking about an abundance of birds in the area, easy send the rural 15-to-25 age group in in 1 month there will be no birds, you see its all done with catapults.

In issan wildlife is scraping to survive, all reptiles large and small are eaten, birds and snakes very tasty, rats and dogs eaten daily. The local population sees to that, with parental help, few schools advise. So our remedy of young people would work, if put into operation-it works throughout Thailand.

Just to note, in general how many beautiful coloured birds are seen in Thailand now?????---I just compare with Sri Lanka-equal climatic area, there abundant. But I do agree birds are a big problem in or near airports.

An friend runs charter boats to the Andaman Islands, one of which is noted for it's bird life. His Thai staff aren't allowed to enter. They have to stay on board.

By the by, when I see those kids with their catapults they don't hang around too long ...

  9. This has happened all over Thailand within the adult entertainment scenes, including the North.

These places are no longer user friendly. Greedy business owners, greedy staff and the use of aggressive methods in order to obtain money.

The whole thing has become mechanical and the good humour and fun atmosphere has disappeared. And before anyone says; it`s always been that way, I will disagree. I can remember when these establishments where more sociable and not the aggressive purely for business institutions they have become today.

In the end the grab as much money, for doing as little as possible, in the shortest possible time attitudes, doesn't work.

I just see this as more nails in the coffin for the Thai tourist industry and whether some dislike the sex scene in Thailand, it did bring in the dollars.

I would love to see some statistics in real terms of how much money Thailand is losing year by year with it`s every dwindling tourist industry.

If by 'dwindling tourist industry' you mean less sex tourists, great!

  10. The corruption in Thailand is everywhere, all the time.

A couple of days ago my brother was caught by the police for littering. He had thrown an empty yoghurt box on the street, so the police walked him to the nearest police shed and fined him 2000 baht. Before my bro left, he asked them if he could get a reciept. One of the officers replied: "Do you want 1000 baht back, or do you want the reciept"?

He did the right thing and took the reciept, walking away with a smile on his face, knowing that he had robbed them of their tea money. :D He knew that if he had not taken the reciept, the police would just stuff the money in their own pockets.

The corruption will never end. People in this country are just too money hungry and greedy.. Hell, even when u get married you gotta PAY for it. Pathetic.

No, and this country's environment will continue to be sullied by the likes of your stupid brother tossing garbage on to the street! Couldn't he have made the effort to dispose of it properly? I always do. If no litter bins available I'll take it to the nearest black bag, they're everywhere waiting for collection.

    What an astonishing post!

  11. You can never win against the cynics.... "Now the Owner has bought your patronage for 30 baht" ??? come on, are some of you so bitter that this is all you see ?

The Op has posted a positive experience on a forum much more frequently populated by negative ones. People find something wrong with this ?

I agree. Whilst I'm occasionally irritated by the local freelance transport providers here on Phuket and have been here long enough to be aware of which tourist targeted establishments to avoid, I do feel the 'buying of patronage for 30 baht' and even more '300 baht'?! stretching credulity too far.

Some posters should simply lighten up, get out of their farang ghettos and stop getting involved in their equally cynically minded chums slag off theThais fests. A little more perspective and less paranoia would give those types a more enjoyable living experience here.

  12. Nope, it is not fiction. Don't forget that Phuket is Thailand's 2nd biggest tourist destination and in comparison to last year, the number of visitors is way up. Occupancies at the mid to upper end hotels were robust. This is due in large part to the increased number of direct flights from Australia, Asia and Russia that brought in additional package groups. Indian visitors also surged this year. Toss in the Koh Samui and surrounding regions and the tourist trade had a vibrant lifeline. Nor should one lose sight of Chiang Mai another pillar of the tourist trade. It has a loyal and steady tourist base that appreciates the region. As for Pattaya, well the city would have to be under a massive zombie attack before its visitors paid attention.

Yes the Bangkok floods hurt, but tourists don't want to hang around Bangkok for more than a couple days. Many of the betterorganized tour operators changed their itineraries around and moved the tourists to other venues. In any case, BKK operated, and aside from a few weeks, the popular tourist areas of BKK were ok.

I know that many will disagree, but the only real historical dent to the tourist trade came when the airports were occupied. Even at the height of the Bangkok Redshirt protests, key tourist areas in Chiang Mai and Phuket were humming along. Yes, many people were hit hard by the floods, but those areas doon't hold the big tourist draws, which remain, beaches, sun and golf courses. I predict that the December 2011 tourist numbers are going to surge.

Don't believe me? Check out the room availabilities on Phuket and Samui.

What an earth are you on? THERE'S NO ONE HERE. Everyone's complaining re the 'Ghost Town' atmosphere and lack of customers from Thais to farang businesses. And of course, once again prices soaring 'to compensate' as is Thai stupidity, er, custom, willingly taken up bar all but my local Muslim grocery store and Thai run wine shop, already the cheapest anywhere and nothing on the shelves as he (Thai owner) doesn't want a reputation for gouging. Unlike most who don't give a toss. And that includes the farang run businesses 100%.

You must be talking about the 'high end' (how I hate that term), overpriced 'resorts' who's customers barely venture a toe outside the armed gates, preferring to pay through the nose for these prisons er, hotels' crap food and tailored tours and not spend a penny in the local economy, ergo, never visible.

As an aside, after a necessary trip into Chalong today I wouldn't come here for my hard earned rip off holiday now either. I understand British Airways has just started a direct flight to Vietnam.

You in the tourist trade by any chance?

  13. This place is rapidly becoming the same as the UK where, when prices started going through the roof, most people started drinking at home.

The only people drinking in bars will be those looking for a tart or a tourist. How depressing.

  14. Thats funny, DH relocates them regularly, I don't particularly mind, just the poop but other than that, they are ace. I found one eating a mouse once too, that was great :D

You been gone too long if you can't figure out how to add pics, you need to use the full add reply button or full editor in fast reply. ;)

Welcome back chon, good to have you back in Thailand --missed your bug and snake expertise!

They eat mice?! And RATS? Two smallish ones have recently taken up residence in one of my bedrooms. The ceilings are very high and the rats from that particular area have relocated to another part of the house. I too don't mind them except for the enormous amount of shit they produce each day. I can't believe it's merely excremented insect crap. Could it be rats? If so, I wouldn't resent the constant scraping up of their great globs of poop every day. :)

  15. Sorry but what is "rocket"?

Food for guinea pigs.. I often find myself picking it out of pre made baguettes etc.

Philistine. What was the point of your pointless post? I've no doubt you pick out everything else happens to be green also.

BACK on topic. I personally adore Rocket and usually have to resort to schlepping to one of the large supermarkets to get it. It is grown here, in the northern climes of course. I've tried for a translation of both it's names and come up with nothing.

Anyone know the Thai name? Bound to be 'pak' something. I can then ask for it at my local talad sots/nats rather than grazing the entire stall.

  16. Unfortunately, Phuket's beloved Soi Dog Foundation won't do anything to help you and neither will PAWS...both organizations are a joke. Go to the vet on Soi Saiyuan...new building on the left with a sign that says her name. Ask her if she knows anyone who can help...I heard from another source she has the number of a man who will come and remove the dogs and not poison, club or kill them. Good luck!

Care to elaborate on why you believe Soi Dogs and PAWS to be a 'joke'? Not flaming, just interested.

As to the vet on Sai Yuan who has the number of a man who 'will come and remove the dogs'. If not poison or club, what? Where does he take them?

The man apparently has a very big rubber tree farm in Phang Nga, and will take the dogs there. I know one lady who has utilized this man, and has actually gone to Phang Nga to see the dogs and they were in good condition...well fed, loved, and looked after.

For myself, I've only had bad experiences with both Soi Dogs and PAWS. I've got 4 soi dogs around my house. They've been there since they were puppies. One got very sick...I took her to PAWS, asked if they could help, etc and that I was willing to pay, etc and the girl said to me at PAWS, "We are not a shelter." I explained to her again I just wanted the dog looked at to no avail...ended up getting the dog looked after at a Thai vet in town. I have called Soi Dog on many occasions asking them to come for the 4 dogs, sterilize them, return them and that I would pay. They have CONSISTENLY told me on the phone, "Rawai too far. We don't go." So, I found a Thai vet to sterilize the dogs. Everyone raves on and on about Soi Dog and attends all of their exclusive fund-raising parties at the Evason Resort and says that this organization is fantastic and blah blah blah...personally, I just don't see it. I am sure there are other people on the island who donate money to Soi Dogs and PAWS and have a good experience with them. Unfortunately, that was not the case for me.

I'm not being argumentative but Soi Dogs did come to Rawaii free to remove some dogs fairly recently. The only issue I have with them is that they dump the dogs back where they found them if they cannot re-home after being treated. As to PAWS, I recently took a dog there, having been given conflicting/incomplete information by the vet on Sai Yuan. Their practice also has no x-ray machine.

I was very happy with Khun Ouai at PAWS, even though the prognosis was very bad (as expected) but she did give me very comprehensive information and carried out more tests. And no, they are not a shelter. Not enough room.Perhaps there was some misunderstanding if you told her/whomsoever, it was a soi dog and thought it would not be picked up after treatment?

PS Happy to hear about the nice guy in Phang Nga. I had someone take a python I'd rescued up there once before it got made into shoes/handbags.

  17. just been out of phuket for 2 weeks traveling various places in thailand including southern islands where it comes in on ferries.... not one place raising prices because of "FLOODING". phuket is gouging and profiteering on other peoples downs.

whether its the supplier or bar owner i don't know profiteering. i personally will not go back to any bar that i feel is profiteering at others expenses and losses.

The Thai owner of a local booze outlet told me, when asked why 'no beer?!' yesterday he absolutely refuses to buy bottled beer at present as he knows for a fact many suppliers in Bangkok are stockpiling and he doesn't want his customers (mainly farang) to think he's the one gouging. He'd rather see his business suffer.Kudos to him, but tad disappointing for me.

  18. Prostitution the oldest profession in the world,I don't understand the stigma behind it to be honest,it's not like it never happens in Europe or the US is it now,no one ever married a pro or admitted that their mother was one, times change country's move on,so what if your girlfriend, wife or boyfriend worked in the sex industry,is it accepted more in the Netherlands because it is government run and taxed, are you a better punter if you are like the rich and famous and pay maybe 500 quid a night, who knows and cares,it's rife amongst the rich and famous, politicians, presidents, footballers, policemen, doctors, lawyers, the milk man, what about those in the adult film industry, how does one feel knowing his or her wife, husband goes to work daily for sex,is this more accepted because it pays top dollar, why don't people look at the wider picture here,it's not just the Los that it happens.<br /><br />And for the record yes,my girlfriend of two years worked in a bar when I met her,I've introduced her to my parents, heard all the usual bullshit comments from friends, colleagues and others,Thai bride, ting tong, ladyboy, etc etc am I fazed no,I work hard provide for her and my family, yes at times it's awkward trying to explain that my girlfriend was in the sex industry, but this is the life I lead and I am happy,my congratulations go out to all those who havent chosen the path i have, but the world would be a very boring place if we were al the same straight laced conformists.

The difference is that in the past prostitution was a profession. The courtesan in most countries were educated to become good companions with knowledge and manners. Those girls had no other option to make a decent living as the societies didnt allow anyone with initiative to make it unless they were from a special class.

Nowadays prostitution is practiced by the lazy, party addict, sleazy or drug addicts in every single country, there is no pride in it. A high class escort is a little more acceptable but personally i still could not handle it. Any poor girl from issaan with some hardwork and initiative and willingness can set herself up to be making 15k+ per month by the age of 30 without having sex with a single man.

I'm guessing the 'most counties' quite possibly refers to Japan and China? The French, from which the word derives, are/were as lazy party goers as those to whom you refer in the rest of your post.

PS I include the French merely because of the word. 'High Class' and 'Prostitute do not belong in the same sentence.

  19. I don't have a problem with it. However, it's usually unlikely to work out. Keep us informed of how things go.

Your right it is unlikely to work out that's becasue from what I've seen why it doesn't work out is becasue the man has lied about what he is worth, given the woman false hope, treated her like dirt and generally just behaves like an complete and utter ar#hol#.

Those on the other hand that were honest from day one whether they have money or not (because that really doesn't matter) treats the woman with respect and doesn't continually ring her phone when hes at work "where are you? what are you doing? your no good etc etc" chances are it will work out.

Unfortunately those type of folk are far and few between over here all I see is plane load after plane load of insecure childish grown men that haven't got a chance in hell of ever having a proper relationship with any woman from any county and from any walk of life bg or not.

    BIG + 1.

Also, I see how a lot of these girls are spoken to by their new found 'boyfrend'/sponsors who'd earn a sharp slap from a woman from their own culture and think 'by God, these tarts sure do earn their money' ...

  20. @KarenBravo - Rawaii sounded the best place since I understand that it is awash with mutt-living 'farang', unlike my local area, where both Thais and the few foreigners are quite happy to poison, run over or eliminate by other means the hoards of stray dogs.

If it's a choice between tourists/guests being attacked by the dogs or myself driving my car over them, then I better find my car keys.

Do Burmese eats dogs? 1000 baht per dog is a crazy amount - euthunasia doesn't cost that much...

    Bring on the flames...

    Simon

Well, that's put us Rawaii dwellers in our place. How enlightened by comparison you all sound up there in Mai Khao.
