All the others that came across were smart enough not to go to hospital knowing they might get in trouble.  COVID is everywhere and it only kills very few.

All the sugar and salt that Thais eat is way more dangerous but that’s not sensational for CNN

There's probably some 'over-measurement' of covid deaths in western countries (where death + covid can be registered as death due to covid), but that doesn't explain surges in ICU patients and obituaries. See 'Very dark couple of weeks': Morgues and hospitals overflow (apnews.com)  So, yeah, if you are relatively healthy, covid may not kill you, but ending up in hospital is no fun. And over indulgence in sugar and salt doesn't send such numbers to the ICU.

  2. If I recall correctly, some messages between the various suspects somehow got out on social media. I'm not sure if they were verified as real, but I think the suggestion was that she may have been intentionally drugged with the intent to sexually assault her. I may be wrong here, but I also seem to remember there being some evidence of sexual assault. If this is the case, then 8 years (at least) is certainly justified. If, otherwise, it was 'simply' a matter of a girl getting herself too drunk/high at a party and a guy panicking about how to deal with the situation, then 8 years seems pretty harsh. Intent is key.

Wish you'd wait until you're sober though, before posting your 70's macho medallion man misogynistic tripe. Whatever drives that is your problem.

Not all pretties are hookers - far from it. Not all women are predatory. Women don't deserve to be raped or sexually assaulted because of the way they dress. Try reading about drinks spiked with drugs, vodka etc. Read about the case before spouting nonsense.

Sad you appear to be British from your avatar. You'd be more at home on the Indian sub-continent with your views on women.

I love the irony -- go after someone else for their supposed misogyny, then cap it off with a touch of casual racism. I'm old, but the world keeps me entertained!

have you ever heard of "search" engines?

Um, yeah... did that also. Nothing like an 88% false negative rate came up. Of course, that sort of response on your part kills off your credibility. Make a dubious claim and expect others to source it for you. Doesn't work that way

Anyway, you might want to check the latest from the Lancet: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30453-7/fulltext

"Globally, most effort so far has been invested in turnaround times and low test sensitivity (ie, false negatives); one systematic review reported false-negative rates of between 2% and 33% in repeat sample testing."

That's a recent research review... far off 88%

I am willing to agree with you on the point where nothing is going to come out of this. However, it´s hard to agree with your comment that he would have all his ducks in a row on this. Assuming that the accusation is right, and none of the authorities mentioned was assigned to investigate before or after he was removed from his duties. Is that not against lawful procedures? It might even be breaking both the law and the constitution as well as a big part of the Thai Labour Laws.

Would you please elaborate on that. I know that it´s going to be like dust hidden under the carpet, when they have come up with another excuse after another for the next two years. However, explain to me how you can be so sure that nothing has been done wrongfully in this case?

I was going to make the same argument, but you said it in a much more thoughtful way. The issue HERE is not whether Big Joke engaged in some kind of corruption but that he was moved to an inactive post well over a year ago without any formal investigation to validate/justify that transfer. It's quite black and white (and it's different from whether corruption took place, where you could have some evidence but not enough to prosecute). Then, as others point out, the next interesting question is 'why choose this time to take action'. Big Joke might smell blood in the water and he be finding more support in the back rooms than he had before. Time to buy some popcorn...

They admitted the killings in order to not get executed? Why do I feel so bad around my stomach when thinking of rule of law the Thai style?? These guys will spend decades in jail for something they might have never committed...

Thai justice system in total need of credibility... Red Bull walks free? Myanmar workers put on death row. Corrupt <deleted> up country with no trust in justice.

Except the very same thing happens in other countries too. In places like the US, accused persons can sometimes avoid the death penalty by pleading guilty if the defence and prosecution have reasons for negotiating such an option. And while there are no 'royal pardons' there, we've seen 'presidential pardons' in recent months for lesser crimes.

Shame is a Christian concept, last time I looked most Thais were Buddhist.

Actually, you have it the wrong way around. Western Judeo-Christian cultures tend to be guilt-focused, which is about feeling bad for one's behaviour because it violates some objectives rules/norms (such as the 10 commandments). Eastern cultures are more shame-focused: it's about worrying what other people will think of you and feeling bad (shame/embarassment) when others think you've done something wrong. 'Face' is all about shame (not guilt). Shame is more Thai. [Do something bad when stranded on a desert isle, you can feel guilt but not shame ... unless you think your ancestors are looking down from the clouds].

    1. I understand that sites like this rely on advertising revenue - I don't object to ads
    2. I understand that ad blockers undermine this - I have no interest in ad blockers and do not use them
    3. I have no interest/intent in discussing ad content and no objection to ad content
    4. I have read all of the pinned notices on this forum, and they do not specifically address my query
    5. I assume that ThaiVisa not only wants ad revenue but also a good customer experience so that users continue to come to the site

Given the above, my issue is with user experience. Every single time I click into a new page I have to close 2 or 3 pop-ups/ windows before I can read the content because that content is obscured. That leaves many other ads/messages around the screen that I have no problem with. But I find myself leaving the site very quickly now out of frustration. I know I am not alone in this as some of my friends have told me the same thing (a couple have even stopped coming). I understood that back in March a solution was being sought for this, but nothing seems to have changed. Is the issue still being looked at, or is this the standard user experience we are to expect for the foreseeable future?

    Thank-you

GF was telling me that Thais on an FB group were running a poll and Thaksin had 5 times more votes than Prayut as preferred leader of the country right now. Therefore a lot of Thais actually do care about him. Even though he is a criminal fugitive, the GF said that all Thai politicians are corrupt though some are less corrupt, or, at least corrupt in the right way and look after their people (voters).

I'm not arguing with the results of the survey, but I wouldn't trust an FB survey for anything. FB pages reflect networks of people, and we have no way of knowing if the network of people who clicked into that page are representative of the voting population or the general population.

It is in Phuket, a largely Muslim area.

I know that... it's still an Arabic name nonetheless. Google it and see the faces that pop up...

[My gf is Muslim Indonesian, and in her country, having an Arabic name like this denotes recent Arabic ancestry … not sure about Thailand. All I know is that the Muslim Thais I've met do not have Arabic family names. Anyway, it's neither here nor there - I was only responding to a poster who suggested that the Aussie was somehow not 'really' Aussie because he had a Vietnamese name... knocking the same logic back at him/her re the Thai in this incident]
