  1. You are right about the Tylenol. I was given 10 tablets when I saw an orthopedic doctor at BNH for treatment after breaking my arm at the elbow in an accident last year.

They didn't help in the slightest. I couldn't even get an injection to ease the pain.

Some years ago a Thai work colleague was denied proper pain relief at Rajvithi Hospital. The doctor treating her told me that as a matter of policy they do not give strong pain management drugs to patients for fear they might become addicted. Logical enough, but this was a terminal case of cancer and she did suffer unnecessarily before she died.

  2. The photocopy of the title pages of your passport is required by Thai Customs for clearance. It has nothing to do with Fedex. All they will do is show it to the Customs officer for clearance of your goods. Even if your order comes by regular mail you will still have to produce this along with the green Customs form, duty as assessed and VAT when you pick up your package from the post office. If there is no duty then they won't need it.

My experience has been that if vitamin or other pills are involved they will often have to get approval from the Food and Drug Administration. This is usually quite fast.

The passport photocopy or scan is a routine government requirement. There is nothing suspicious or conspiratorial about it. Customs must have acquired enough of mine to paper the walls of several offices over the years.

  3. Quinton Quayle's statement would have served a purpose if he had pointed out that part of the quote was missing and then given the whole quote, which is well-balanced. That would have conveyed the vital information that was missing.

Instead he blathered on contritely about a brand called Amazing Thailand. I think Rumbold would have handled it better.

""And if anybody wants to know what their culture consists of the answer is that it consists of themselves, their excellent manners, their fastidious habits, their graceful gestures and their elegant persons. If we are elephants and oxen they are gazelles and butterflies"

Magnificent! The Thais I know would have loved that.

  4. You mean when the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh and offices belonging to Thai businesses were burned down back when Thaksin was the prime minister? Timing is the key. Hun Sen is due here tomorrow for the three-day Asean Summit in Cha-Am.

Every time there's an Asean Summit or conference Thaksin always seems to steal the show and grab the headlines just as the regional heads of state arrive. Abhisit disappears off the front pages.

Coincidence? I don't think so. More like superb PR and crafty planning.

  5. If it's the first time you were late that sounds like an over-reaction. Could there be another reason why he wants the room back? Someone who might pay more? A friend or relative coming, for instance.

A lawyer might be able to dig up something but I don't know of any specific rights other than those stated in your contract. If he is not paying tax on your rent he could find himself in trouble with the Revenue Department. That's the kind of avenue a lawyer would pursue.

I was a year late once due to a banking mishap and my landlady (Thai) just laughed about it. She's an angel.

  6. I've had two root canals in the last 18 months. One at St Louis Hospital which took three visits and the other at BNH which took two. I would be worried if each session had been reduced to one. Awful problems can result from a rushed job.

Good endodontists are never short of patients here and waiting times for appointments are common. They have a limited time available for each patient which rules out marathon sessions.

My advice would be to trust the dentist you have (you say he's good). Don't complain or he might "forget" the anaesthetic. :)

    Good luck.

  7. I'm surprised they have that many.

According to epidemiologists, this live nasal mist vaccine cannot be taken by anyone outside the 2-49 age group, which rules out a key high-risk group. Surprised they chose this over the regular vaccine which is more versatile.
