  1. My condolences to the family of the young man. No justification for folks to run from the scene of an accident.

Sadly the use of motorbikes by many is really the major catastrophe to be found in Thailand. Why tourists continue to take their lives in their hands riding there is beyond me. Motorbikes are "death machines."

The use of any vehicle here is dangerous, just look at recent news.

He was not a tourist, he lived here and was a partner in a business here.

Motorbikes are not death machines, what an uneducated and stupid statement to make.

In this case it's obvious the car caused it but if you were to go to any hospital in Thailand where they devote entire wards for those injured on a motor bike your opinion about motor bikes would change.
  2. I did this year's ago on an old mid sized sedan lucky there were other variations of this car in auto that allowed me to scrounge parts. It was a lot of work, custom cross support needed to be made, tailshaft was different, differential was changed as the manual used a lower ratio diff. Drove for a while without the reverse interlock and kick down switch. As noted there may be coms (electronics) from the transmission to the main ecu or there may not, being a Toyota it will probably complain but keep going anyway. Find someone who has done one of these cross overs before, most likely they won't be from Thailand!

  3. taking the bus in thailand is a false economy if ever there was one.

life too short to save money by taking the bus.

if i cant afford to fly or drive, i cant afford to go.

Interesting...would you take Nok Air or lash out one more star rating to Thai air. Seriously you think driving your self is safer than bus? Bus meets car..car px die. Bus meets mini bus..hope you get the picture. The odds of a fatality on a government bus (even private company) during the day light hrs must be far greater than car. Granted these odds increase at night when the idiots are in greater numbers.

  4. So, I have been here 10 years legally and I miscalculate my dates and I am stopped and arrested a few days over. Automatic 5 year ban. Wow a bit harsh but TIT. whistling.gif

Arrested and prosecuted is what it says. Doesn't seem harsh to me that they'd want to ban criminals from the country.

Yes, the key words are "arrested and prosecuted". But as others are pointing out, a one day miscalculation could lead to a 5 year ban? That is just wrong. Draconian policies tend to not bother the illegals, since they are going to try and get away with it anyway, but it can really harm the general Tourist population that makes a mistake or gets a bit lax now and then. I know I did a one day overstay in the past, and this was after 11 trips to the country. I thought paying a nominal fine at the border was OK and I was happy to do that as I extended my trip via a border run for another 30 (29) days. I spent a fair amount of money on that two month vacation and now after 14 trips to the country, getting threatened with these penalties is not appreciated.

Wouldn't worry too much, after 14 trips I am sure you know that all is negotiable. This is just a mechanism to get rid of the real undesirables, and long time overdue.

After 35 years I know some things are now NOT negotiable. And another comment just before about brown paper bags???

If you hadn't noticed, there's a General in charge with a mission (among other things) on bribery and corruption. Only a fool would try and buy a government official these days. Cop it sweet and pay the fine...forget about brown paper bags and negotiations.

Ah I hear the crows sing TIT nothing will change....but they have today with this and many other reforms in the last 18 months.

The noose is tightening for those who think they can flaunt / manipulate Thai laws. More of this to come... Guaranteed

  5. I'm sure any of the dentists in the Tukcom area can perform the basic procedures you are looking for. A check up and teeth whitening would be be bread and butter for any of them. I can recommend Dr Cherry at smile dental center, she's just completed 2 implants for me last week and I'm happy with the results.

    http://www.dentalcenterpattaya.com/

There are 5 - 6 shops in this area but it's the blue shop across from Tukcom.

Just beware of dentists that over service and want to fill anything that looks like a cavity. The same goes the other way with under service...busy practices will want to get you out of the chair asap resulting in a half done job.

  6. The antenna on this model unscrews and can be replaced with something exceeding the standard 5dbi antenna or a directional antenna that can be aimed to where the signal is needed most. Apart from moving the router to a more central position this will give the most bang for dollar. Also try changing channels in case there are other wi-fi routers in your area.

Bridging another Wi-Fi router closer to the desired position using a hard wired Ethernet or power line Ethernet can work to.

You can also load Tomato firmware on this model and really unleash its potential! This software also allows the user to tweak or boast the transmitted signal a few mw but this can be over rated as a method of increasing range. The firmware may just give the extra boast you need and does a lot of other special stuff that a $100 router cannot do.

  7. How dare people run businesses to make a profit or charge for a service they provide, what are they thinking!

After all, the ATM machine itself is free, the installation free, the electricity to run it is free, the staff to service it and reload it etc is free the computer systems and hardware, it was all free so why should they charge the customer.

    Roland they should be free!

For every ATM you see that’s one less person the bank needs to employ, get a whole bunch of ATM's and that’s one less branch the bank needs to have and the ATM is happy to take a bullet for the bank and never wants to steal money either! So the cost of power, people to fill /service them and original investment is a bargain in comparison.

    To the poster

The 180B is simply bank corporate greed and the tip of the iceberg; my bank also steals another 4.5% of the transaction at the other end as well. But the real sting has to be the difference in currency conversions between Thai banks. Recently I had 2 withdrawals (10K THB) of the same amount only minutes apart, one from K bank the other from Ayudhya and found K Bank had ripped another $14 more than Ayudhya.

All these little amounts add up to a bigger amount and from a total of 30K THB withdrawn from Thai ATM’s the fees, charges disadvantaged currency conversion across banks totalled more than $95 AUD.

    Cash remains the King!

  8. Legionella exists in the wild under the right temperature conditions and can be hard to control it jumps from water stream to cooling tower or to stagnant water etc. Aspiration into the lungs is thought to be the main mode of transmission. I say it can be hard to control and track down since there are many other factors other than correct dosing and clean CT systems. The bug can be in a cooling tower one day and gone the next. My experience recently with the DH services Victoria Australia where our CT systems were all tested along with others in the western Melbourne as they tried to find the source of a Legionella out break. After the third visit from DHS they had no clues as to the source and had tested everything from shower roses to drinking fountains.

Legionella can show anywhere any country even in the best maintained systems.

  9. It is only the habitual and long term users of tourist visas who are having problems

There has been so much coverage of the new stance the people concerned should not be surprised

Thailand gas a new government that is trying to achieve many many needed changes that acts with strength and determination, this has been needed for a long time

WARNING TO THOSE ON OVERSTAY, you need to leave immediately, and clean up your act, before the new regulations come in or you will risk being banned, it is not difficult to get retirement or marriage visas which probably cover 95% of those on overstay

I am personally in favor or the law being properly enforced

The Thai's I know are clapping their hands over this it should sort out the fugitives and the scum that are lingering in the country on weak immigration laws one said. Another from Thai / Australian said she wanted the government to set up a few special detention centres just like Australia. Overstay a day and be detained a day etc etc.

  10. Thai people need to learn more about food safety, I don't know how some people don't get sick when

I see raw meat hanging for the whole day?

Just have a better look a the raw meat, it was probably slaughtered this morning because it did not have any flies on it, it is too fresh.

Flies are only attracted to meat that is starting to decompose already. Hang up a piece of meat butchered in a western country it will immediately attract flies.

This meat has been butchered 3 to 4 days ago, transported to probably 2 to 3 different cooling cells before it is packed for the supermarket, there it says on the package it was packed on day xx and has to be consumed before day xx. I never had any problems with meat bought on the market here, did have problems in Europe.

This incident most likely has nothing to do with food poisoning from meat, but some clarification on the above statement when it was slaughtered means nothing. Bacteria in meat will be at its highest concentration on the surface so anything that touches the surface can cause contamination the other variable is temperature. Mince meat (hambergers! ) always has potential for the highest bacteria count.

I don't know about Europe but in Thailand "<Thai language removed>" is a common complaint and I don't see people vomiting in public very often back home but here seems to be common.

More needs to be done with hygiene education.

  11. There's no logic here and I wonder if you were there in person would the same loading be applied to a non internet booked room? Some of my best deals have been made just as I was about to walk away.

For me I avoid the parasitic fly by night web based booking agents and I'm more than happy to pay a reasonable higher fee to deal direct with a hotel be it via email web booking or telephone.
