  1. tribute to bambi :o

    Gentle pretty thing

    Who only had one spring

    You bravely faced the world

    Ready for anything

    I'm happy that you lived

    For your life is mine

What have I except to cry

    Spirit never die

    Birds of the air

    Beasts of the earth

Overjoyed at Bambi's birth they gambolled in the glade

    [Chorus]

    Who killed Bambi? [x9]

    Murder murder murder

    Someone should be angry

    The crime of the century

    Who shot little Bambi

    Never trust a hippie

    'Cause I love punky Bambi

I'll kill to find the killer

    In that rotten roll army

    All the spikey punkers

    Believers in the ruins

    With one big shout

    They all cry out

    Who killed Bambi?

    [Chorus x2]

  7. The immediate questions that come to mind are:

    1) what is the rent on the building?

    2) what does that amount come to per square meter?

    3) who pays the rent on the building?

    4) are public funds used to pay the rent or to maintain the building?

Thaksin's wife owns new party headquarters

The prime minister's wife Khunying Potjaman Shinawatra has made sure that the building housing the new Thai Rak Thai party headquarters is registered in her name, meaning it will not go to charity should the ruling party be dissolved.

The party celebrated its seventh anniversary yesterday with the unveiling of a new address. It moved from the Shin Building III to its new headquarters in a building which previously belonged to the Industrial Finance Corporation of Thailand, on Phetchaburi road.

Khunying Potjaman bought the building for 800 million baht and has allowed the party to use it as its headquarters free of charge. The cost of running the headquarters will be met from public donations to the party.

Phumtham Vejjayachai, the party's deputy secretary-general, said the building was not the party's property.

``Having said that, for a party to grow into a political institution, it is not a deciding factor that it must own its headquarters building,'' he insisted.

Khunying Potjaman has permitted in writing the party's full access to the building. MPs from each region will have their own meeting room and there will be personal offices for cabinet ministers and party executives.

A call centre and necessary facilities are up-and-running to connect the party with its 15 million members nationwide.

The party will also organise a think-tank network of professionals from various fields who will contribute to its policy formulation.

Observers have said that maintaining private ownership of the building may be an attempt to sidestep the law requiring that all assets of a political party be handed over to a charitable organisation for public benefit after it is disbanded.

Some critics have called into question the willingness on the part of the prime minister's family to make sacrifices to the party.

But Mr Phumtham said the party had what it took to become a fully-fledged political institution. Its success hinged on its ability to stay in politics, create a desirable political culture and expand party membership, he said.

``Unlike some parties whose existence is rendered meaningless by its failure to serve a political purpose, our party has delivered goals throughout the seven years since it was established,'' he said, ending with a swipe at the rival Democrat party.

  8. i have helped a number of farangs over the years and have done well-out of it :D

but then i never give straight-out loans and i make sure that i've control over security or bank accounts, right now i have a friend who last year lost his business in hong kong, i know his capabilities, so i funded his next project, we have strict terms and of course i control the bank :D

guess what, this guy works his arse off and already i've got my money back and am part of a growing successful business, does this make me an exploiter of farangs that are down on their knee's, i don't think so, i've met many succesful farangs on my drinking rounds, but if i wanna do business with them, do check them out thouroughly and not just rely on trust :o

yes, i've lost a few, but the losses are by far compensated by the profits i've made :D

  9. Being as this question is posted in "GAYS IN THAILAND" I think it needs to be answered from a gay in Thailand point of view and I am guessing that a number of those who so kindly responded are not. Should one be going out with a BB (yeah, yeah I know we aren't allowed to talk about those) then one is most definately expected to pay. If said BB decided to invite friends along for a bite then you are still expected to pay. If you don't want to pay or don't have the means then better you don't go.

Traditionally (maybe an old tradition that some are trying desperately to hold on to) the wealthiest and/or oldest person pays. This applies to everyday gatherings (not gay).

I don't mind paying as long as it is MY choice. If I am paying I choose the venue. If someone gets out of control and orders something I feel is excessive I have no problem saying NO.

    Hope this helps.    :o

    same..same with bg's too :D

  10. Thailand will step up efforts to prevent Chinese tourists from being cheated by so-called "zero-dollar tours", the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced.

    That's the good news.

The bad news is, this statement was made in August, 2000.

So when Thai authorities recently stated that they would "discuss the problem and draft measures to address the problem", a strain of skepticism was inevitable.

"Zero-dollar" tours derive their name from package tours sold mainly in China, and to a much lesser degree in Korea, which include free air fare and low-cost accommodation. But once the incredulous (and gullible) tourists set foot in the Kingdom, the scam begins.

The groups are herded from one expensive jewelry shop to another, from pricey entertainment joints to expensive restaurants. Not being able to speak Thai, and virtually imprisoned within the group, they are ripped blind.

Unscrupulous tour operators (both Thai and Chinese) and their selected outlets in Thailand reap handsome rewards - one estimate puts the loss to the legitimate tour industry at as much as US$400 million a year. Officials claim that about 90% of Thailand's inbound operators specializing in Chinese tourists are of the "zero-dollar" kind.

In 2004, 624,214 Chinese visited Thailand, down 5% from 2003, but the number plunged 28% in the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Much of this can be attributed to the falloff following the December 26 tsunami last year that ravaged some tourist areas of Thailand's southern Andaman Sea coast, but also to growing complaints from Chinese authorities over the rip-offs. Beijing, Xian and Chengdu are the main source of Chinese tourists travelling to Thailand.

Now the Tourism and Sports Ministry (established subsequent to the TAT's 2000 declaration to clean up the industry) and the TAT have announced the establishment of a Chinese Tourist Protection Association, of which at least 25 of about 80 low-cost tour operators that specialize in Chinese tourists will be members.

Somsak Thepsuthin, Tourism and Sports minister, said that the association would establish a center to serve Chinese tourists while they are in the kingdom. The center will be open around the clock to handle complaints, with Mandarin-speaking staff in attendance. Members of the new association will be required to pay a 2 million baht (US$50,000) deposit to the center. This money will be used to settle claims by disgruntled tourists.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry has also held meetings with related agencies, including the TAT, major Chinese and Thai travel agents, the Immigration Department and the Tourist Police, to discuss the problem and draft measures to address it.

A TAT official explained, "Since most Chinese tourists are first-time travelers and are unaware of the actual cost of the packages, we will offer them tours with prices attached which will be authorized by the TAT."

At the same time, the ministry will also focus on drawing more high-end Chinese tourists, as well as increasing two-way tourism traffic between the two countries to mark the 30th anniversary of Thailand-China diplomatic relations.

Adisai Bodharamik, former tourism minister, commented, "Thailand is fully supporting concrete measures to solve the problem of Chinese tourists getting unfair tour programs."

Returning from a visit to China at which tourist officials from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore were also present, Adisai said, "That [scam] is why the top tourism officials of the four countries met in China." He noted that the sides agreed in a memorandum of understanding that they would use strict measures to punish tour operators who conducted "zero-dollar tours" or other illegal activities to Chinese tourists.

If found guilty, tour operator in any one of the four countries would immediately be taken off the list of certified trading partners in the other three countries, Adisai said.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will officially visit China next month and the measures to win back the confidence of Chinese tourists are expected to be high on his agenda.

Jurupol Ruangket, president of the Professional Tourist Guides of Thailand association, which represents more than 4,000 guides across the country, said, however, that the measures would not solve the problem because of weak law enforcement. "The government has been trying to end this issue for a long time with different strategies, but the same problem always comes along due to the government's poor implementation," Jarupol said.

Indeed, remember the 2000 TAT declaration of the war against shady practices that came to nothing?

For 2004, there were 8.29 million tourist arrivals in Thailand, up 19.5% from the year before. But for 2005, the figure is expected to be below this, and certainly well below the targeted 13.3 million, mainly as a result of the tsunami. Tourism accounts for 6% of Thailand's gross domestic product. The drop in arrivals could cost the country as much 30 billion baht in revenue.

  11. What is considered "normal", standard or reasonable in terms of a farang assisting (providing money) to 1. The Thai "traditional wife. and 2. Other family members, ie. parents, brothers, sisters on a monthly basis?  How much and to what extent should the daughter, ie my wife be expected to dole out to her family each month??

nothing is considered normal, ask yourself this question, would they bail your family out when in trouble, most unlikely :o

so find out who is working, who's not and why they're not working, i.e. lazy, drinking, then do a total summary and analyze it, your wife should only be compensated for her loss of income, plus a few thousand baht extra :D

don't forget, they may have already been leaching of your wife :D

its not your job to feed the family, they took care of themselves so far, so let it be :D

  12. well, went to see the guys at the sin club last night and oh boy, do they have a great party planned for all thaivisa members :D

  13. However, it does sound as if they were treated badly, whenever a forigner is arrested, it should be routine that a tourist policeman and an interpreter are present before any signing of decuments etc.

i agree, as a foreigner you should never be harrassed to sign, also as far as i know, tourist police must be present, and don't forget your lawyer :D

It's interesting to see how many of you say that the tourist police should be involved.

I know quite a few Thai people who work at the airport and through their job often have to deal with difficult (and sometimes aggressive) foreigners. I asked them why they didn't get help from the tourist police only to be told that "the tourist police cannot speak English. All they can do is stand and stare". If this is true then I don't see what help they can be.

foreigners are aggressive and difficult the world over, try new york airport :o

Tourists, you are wanted in Thailand, honest! Just don't step slightly out of line or else.
Correction: Tourists, you are NOT wanted in Thailand but we DO WANT your money.

that's balloney, thailand depends on tourist dollars, like any other tourist destination around the world :D

These same Thai people have used very similar words to me " We don't like you foreigners, but we like your money"

that's news to me, try the europeans and see if they like the foreigners, yes, i may agree they don't like the sex tourists, but that's a different matter :D

I am sure that in the above case the police were hoping for some kind of extra money.

yes, try to pay bribe in singapore and you get 10 lashes with a whip, one minute you critise his lack of thai law knowledge, and now you want him to offer bribes :D

petedk - not sure who you associate with, but I for one know I am welcome as many of my mates who work/live in thailand. It's how you act and behave that makes a difference to thai people.

brit, i concur with that one :D

Hear, hear, Britmaveric.  I was thinking of an appropriate response to peterdk's comments, and you hit the nail on the head.

  14. they're are so slow it takes a few weeks to make-up their mind whether to ban it or not :o

and last year we were proudly told by our clever government that it would take 3 months to completely eradicate the bird-flu, even though they did not even have a vaccine to do it :D

yet at the same time experts around the world said that with a proper program, it will take at least 2-years, but of course the thai's know better than that :D

i've stopped eating chicken and duck in asia a long time age :D

  15. I'd like to flip the question round and ask why Thai people don't think farangs can speak Thai? I've often heard Thais commenting on me, no further than 2 yards away, because they think I don't understand. In answer to your question though, as shallow as this world is, people don't think you can speak English because you are Thai and people don't think I can speak Thai because I'm English.

i love this one when i go to thai board meetings, i bring my dutch friend who speaks fluent thai, they always try to check if we understand their lingo, of course we don't, saved me a lot of grief and money :D

bambi, what were you doing in bedlam, you don't have 500 posts as yet :o

  16. Kreon, saw you walking from Bumrungrad yesterday, honked to offer you a lift but you were attached to your mobile :D

    ah..that was you :D

I'm all for the TV meets (they're a blast as anyone who's been would agree) BUT I'd bet you'd get alot more ppl out if you didn't call it a TV "Pissup". Sure, there is  that but as LC pointed out even Scamp made his plane :D

I dunno but in the short time remaining, you might want to repost and call it a "TV Members Meet n Greet" or??? There's alot of ppl whom may be put off of what may sound like total hedonism (and a fair few turned on;) ah well, just a thought...  :o  :D

well if the mods can make a softer header such as you are suggesting, that's fine by me, as you know i am not really that hardcore :D
