Choices will be far less than where you used to live...
I am trying to find a house in that area, and I know: for western food I will need to be pro-active... make it myself in my own kitchen!
Nothing really special in that area when it comes to European/ Western food. But OK Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese food at Meechok. The rest I think it is so-so. (not a fan of Mac FastFood)

walking is a great core builder and the back really likes and I would suggest doing this said walking in a large pool and see how you feel a couple months later, assuming you were to do this 3-4 times a week. Few good pools for this around CM, may as well give it a shot.
At nearing 46 with back pain in my first disk walking makes me much happier and my back feels like I'm 30 and not 46, just my 2 cents...and I dropped 30 kgs so my mission is nearly complrte why I moved here in February...H2O cheers
Jees... you lost 30 kg since Feb this year?
Wow... congrats...
-still in awe-
OP, I am trying to figure out what kind of pain you have. Are your back muscles tight and short and do you have less pain when you stretch them? Or were the leg presses too heavy that it injured your back...? What kind of pain is it? Like an electrical shock or ...OK, it's hard to explain, I know. An operation is serious business with no guarantee, I would be very hesitant about this.
A close friend had similar pain but from the butt to leg. The Physical therapist helped her for a little while, but for the long term she needed to make more different movements to make the muscles longer and flexible.
Have you tried deep tissue massage in CM? Pilates?
My guess is that any therapist could help you for a moment but it's not a long term solution. For this I think you need to find out which exercises are helpful, and exercise daily (even if it is only to manage pain)
Sometimes I'm lazy but after a few days I feel my back...
Btw, when I need instant relief from pain in general, I go to the acupuncturist so I can function normally.
Hope one day you no longer need pills. Good luck.

I think it really depends at what time you eat there. I'm usually the only foreigner... (after 9PM)
-
Euhm...you do know that it is not uncommon that staff have to pay the difference themselves?

I have to mention Lemon Tree, next to Salsa Kitchen. Thai food and you can ask not to put MSG in the food (except for the sauces they make earlier)
I like this little restaurant because 90 % of the customers is Thai and it has a nice informal atmosphere.
40-200 baht dishes. Food is not tongue blowing, but I find it better than the average local restaurant.
-
There are 3 acupuncturists I know of, the ones mentioned in old topics are still active. 500 baht per session.
I use 2 of them ( Dr. Wang and Mc Cormick Hospital) depending on the discomfort.

I thought I saw grape seed oil at Rimping/ Meechok plaza awhile ago, but today I couldn't find it anymore...

Bar girls like it...
reveiving money.
They'll say anything for the bahts,
and of course men believe what they say...
But you know this already.

But unlike salt, it stays in your throat and on your tongue forever. Somehow it makes my salvia thick and sticky in the throat.
Anyway, I never heard of MSG/Vetsin, it was only after I started observing my physical discomforts after having eaten food containing this ingredient.
-
It really depends what kind of person you are and what your plans are. Near Doi Suthep would be best, but for only a few days I'd stay in the city.

Yes, we live in the 21st century, and yes women and men (are supposed to) have equal rights, but the nature of a woman is totally different from the nature of the man.
Men are hunters, women...etc..etc
Even though we have birth control methods and women are free to enjoy sex without being afraid of getting pregnant, it is still in her nature to be selective, to be careful.
So personally I wonder why women have sex on a first date, options are:
- for fun
- to win the guy emotionally for whatever the reason (for men sex is the glue)
- therapeutical (to get her confidence back, to feel desired/loved etc)
- a man is as a fitness equipment to her.
etc.
Each option is fine with me, as long as both parties are happy.
But if a woman is in there for a serious relationship, she'll wait. She knows how she'll be seen in general and by the man when she gives herself on a first date. Plus, like one poster mentioned, a woman needs to feel safe and needs more than 1 date to give herself totally and not only her body.
We all want someone special and if I were a man and I'd have a partner with whom I had sex on a first date, I would wonder why she couldn't wait.
Call me narrow minded, but this is how I think about it.
You know, the innocent pre-sex phase is so delicate and beautiful, it will never come back.
To meet that someone you can do 2 things:
- meet as many people as you can, but then you have to kiss 1000 frogs before you find that one.
or
- be selective and kiss a handful of frogs and meet the prince Haha...

I buy Japanese brand soy sauce btw not the Thai brand.
And when ingredients are printed in only Thai I ask supermarket staff (in Thai) if products contain MSG.
I hardly use ready made products (sauces, snacks)
Sorry, but I just feel more comfortable with Thais (Asians) around me. Don't shoot me, but an introvert culture produce introvert people. I know this is a whole different subject, but this is my explanation for the 50%.
No worries. You've been a member here just about one month, so with the Thaivisa honeymoon officially over I figured it time to poke a little.
I'm pretty much the same, especially when first visiting new places.
WTK
WTK, I know you like to pinch and poke sometimes, I even have a nickname for you...
When you misbehave badly, I will use it
@uptoyoumyfriend: "after inquiring why they have to put so much of it the answer was that(thai) customers wants it"
Local restaurants use MSG, because locals like it. Easy like that.
So it's me who basically need to stop hoping to find local places without E211, because they for sure won't stop using it as long as regular Thai customers want it.
But recommendations are still welcome

Jackr, I think I know which one you mean, but I always assumed... worth a try!

I wonder if anyone is able to detect if what they eat has msg added to it? If so, what's the trick?!
Sorry i've not answered the OP directly yet, but still thinking. I would say though that khun churn has always had a lot of thais in it whenever i go there.
Khun Churn is one of my favourites, but I like variety.
And my body can tell when MSG is added...
I went to the Thai veggie restaurant near Wat Phra Sing, and they were honest about their food containing MSG.
Ulysses G. I have noted your 3 recommendations.

Khun Churn on Nimmanhaemin, Soi 17. It's 99 baht for lunch. Be aware that it's strictly vegetarian. It's FANTASTIC, though.
I tried Khun Churn yesterday for the first time, and it was good. Is it still 99 THB, or has the price risen? It cost me 129 THB, even though I did not order anything extra. Or are there some self-serve items that cost extra, like the drinks and tea, or dessert?
Price increase... like so many other places (Korean buffet, Why Not, massage etc)
I wonder if 33% increase is an annual thing or once every X years thing.
-
Khun Churn, Taste of Heaven, Blue Diamond, Pun Pun, Aum, etc. etc they don't use MSG and are pesticide-careful, which I like. But visited mostly, if not only, by foreigners and travelers.
I heard about local restaurants & great Thai food but I am almost sure they use MSG, especially the 30 baht places. Even the 300 baht places where 98% of customers is Thai, put MSG in the food.
Thai food in local restaurants seem to be related with MSG and pesticide-unawareness. Please prove me wrong.
At the moment I crave for a veggie Khao Soi, but I want to try something else than the usual restaurants as mentioned above and other non-Thai places.
Hungry...need food!

So the website named " superrichchiangmai.com" with rates that is applicable for a branch in BKK and not for the branch in CM...? Is a bit strange...
Ah maybe it's actually a different company (an unauthorized copycat?)... I was talking about the Super Rich who has this web site: http://superrich1965.com
On the superrichchiangmai.com web site it says "Please contact our call center for firm rates : Call Centre 66(0) 89 5351 819, 66(0) 81 8811 882". So that is a direct admission that the rates on their web site are not "firm", i.e. cannot be fully relied upon.
I think you are right on this...

And I can't find that info on the site, btw.
Never mind, calling for the rate is more reliable than the site anyway.

UPdate on 1/11/11: there is now also a SuperRIch change outlet (ONLY real cash-I think only BUY and not sell foreign currency) on Loy Kroh-a desk IN another shop-clearly labeled, about across from TaPae soi 4 =between soi 2-3 on LK. Beat that SK with 0,05 THB/unit (USD or EUR), again: best rates ONLY daytime, SR in BKK also does-slightly lower, but still better as banks, after 15.00 or so-due to the closing of FRorEx in Japan or wherever.
Esp good for more obscure money, like Chinese Yuan. NO Lao KIp taken! SR in BKK offers even slightly better rates for big notes in US or EUR-they do not seem to do that here in CM
Apparently most of the posters are not aware of the Super Rich that opened up on Loi Kroh road, I say about 4-5 months ago. They do offer a slightly higher rate than SK Changer on USD. It's a small office, located around half way down Loi Kroh between all the massage parlors. I'd say either SRich or SK is always the best for exchanging dollars.
there is 3 money changers in cnx at the moment, next to montri hotel, loi kroh road, and charoenprathet rd.
But beware, call first about the rate. The rate shown on the website (Super Rich) is higher than in real. 5 minutes after I checked online I was at Super Rich and it was 50 satang less. The manager made up many excuses (in BKK rate is higher, every minute the rate changes, Euro is dying etc.) but the online rate is just bate, just like " no commission, no fee..." Haha...
The rate was the same as at SK.

Lace
in Chiang Mai
It would be wonderful if there are more lace sources in CM.
I wonder though if the Belgium style lace is what the sister is looking for.
If there is a source in CM for fine lace as used in lingerie, it certainly has my interest!
-
Sparkles, I do think it makes sense that there are more BKK people looking for a house. But after reading the posts I think only a few are interested in long term & unfurnished rentals.
-
Does S.K. have a web site with their latest rates?
No. But you can call them for the rate.
-
Lace
in Chiang Mai
So far I have seen only ribbons of lace, not fabric.
(Warorot)
I have to say that Chiang Mai is pretty limited comparing to BKK.
But maybe I missed out something...

I don't follow, most of the posts seem to relate to cash transactions. What about in you want to transfer 10-20.000 euro? How to get a good deal then?
Then it depends on the rate of your bank in Europe. I don't think you can transfer money to a money exchanger (if this is a not a bank like SK) If otherwise: please, educate me.
@ Asanee: nice tip! They even have a website.
@Thaimiller: Aaah... I am not the only one who got turned down...
