  1. It's unclear to me for how long you'll be here and if you are planning to walk all the time.

Also what kind of phone, just a simple one for CM?

I'd say try Kad Suan Kaew first, on the groundfloor across TOPS supermarket you'll find several phone shops (e.g. True). You could also try little stalls on other floors.

If you're planning to walk and take songthaews you could try areas closer to the centre. In the sois it can be really quiet.

Keep breathing and take one thing at a time. Good luck.

  2. Meyori, I think I can relate to you.

Some instant examples: When you make a traffic mistake and they think you're Thai, they are less friendly and forgiving than when they realise you're a foreigner. Then they even apologise for having given you a frown / angry face or having used the horn.

In the West being casual is the way to go, hierarchy is not as strong in daily life as it is here. What I learned here is to be nice to a certain extend towards lo-So Thais. Once you've crossed a line and you're too amicable to their level, they lose in a way respect for you. It took me actually a while to see situations through their eyes.

"Oh you're not Thai? I thought you were Thai!" Once they find out you're foreigner, the approach changes, it is very subtle, but you can tell by the body language and expression in the face. Still very friendly and with a smile, but a subtle mask appears to keep distance.

Meyori, I wonder what made you confused. What was the situation like?

  3. So far I had: Tom Yum, ginger, tons of fluids, veggies n fruits, sleep, raw onion.

Redoxon with Zinc was not available at the pharms at and across TOPS (Central).

Both offered me imported Zinc, 400-500 baht. I bought Zinc Thai brand for 150 baht (http://www.healthshop.in.th/product.detail_596602_th_3490570)

Not sure if it is the right Zinc, but I guess Zinc=Zinc (I hope).

I had some disgusting Coca Cola Zero to flush it away ('the bubbles', see one of the first posts) My wishful thinking is: Coke is very good to clean toilets and rust, it might kill bacteria in my body as well....? smile.gif

  4. The cut makes it graphic. As a photo I feel like it needs more 'breathing' space.

I like the diagonal pose of the subject. And I love the face. I wonder how it would look like when you'd photoshop the background and play with different (plain?) backgrounds. Even though the subject has 1 colour, many things are going on there.

  5. Gladiator: I won't be needing Oval... only the thought of my pillow makes me fall asleep smile.gif

    Sallycm:

it was the rain + fan in restaurant + jetlag that killed me. Hot ginger tea sounds really good. I usually eat/drink ginger to heat up my body, and didn't want to use it because of the fever. But it's also an anti-inflammatory... ooooh! Kha!

Thakkar: Thanks! Again ginger smile.gif I will replace soda,as I don't like coca cola.

And see what this Thai remedy is about.

    Aitch:

By reading your post I should be having an ultra-powered immune system! I'm content, live a healthy life, but overactivation in the past crashed my system. This year I'll add daily exercise to all of this.

Good night, I need a good night of sleep to prepare myself for a 'walk' tomorrow. To all my flu-fellows: happy coughing tonight!

    Today's motto:

"To insist on being happy" - Aitch

  6. Join the club! I caught this flu last weekend, it comes with a horrible cough!

Brew up some ginger tea (real ginger not the packaged muck). Chew on the bits of ginger after you have finished the tea. I resorted to the ginger today and already feel much better.

    Exactly, this weekend!

    Ginger.

@Gladiatior: 1000 mg is my daily dose of VitC all year round. But I'll start with 3000 mg for the coming days. What do you mean by "Oval is a good sleep inducive?"

    I feel ... bah.gif.

  7. I'm having this nasty flu for almost a week with a bad cough, I sweat a lot and today I finally started to 'nose-drip': which means that it is 'flowing'. I'm taking lots of (fresh and concentrated) vit C and sleep a lot.

But without the sun and the heat the recovery takes longer than usual. In this pace I don't see myself doing my things next week. I wonder if a visit to a sauna, acupuncturist or whatever will speed up recovery...

  8. Good Herbal Steam Sauna, single cubicles, with controlable heat. Been using it for years, even used by locals. THB 130 if I remeber correctly. 71/1 Rajchapakinai Tai Road 053 -214629 , rooftop setting inside the old city, just off the rajamanka road.

Does this come with or without 'smoke'? Sometime the smoke of the wood & herbs comes in the sauna cabin...uche-uche-uche...bah.gif

  9. (SBK, up north also Thai women wear fishermen pants... )

During the day I wear a shield of clothes to protect me from sun & dirt. Sexy? Haha... no way... it's all about survival!

At home I wear sarongs, easy & light stuff.

And even though I don't wear my heels very often, I always enjoy wearing them. But it is such a hassle on the motorbike: I need an extra pair of shoes (for on motorbike) or I have to call a taxi. So basically there is more organising involved.

In the West I usually wore winter clothes, even in the summer biggrin.gif

PS. Haha... I remember one time when I wore a pencil skirt, I just couldn't get on my motorbike! So I decided to take a songtheaw, but even hopping on a songtheaw was impossible. 555... I gave people something to laugh about! In the end I went back home to change. And learned my lesson smile.gif

  10. I used no poo treatment for 4 years, and it smelled like vanilla (I was told by my sister), soft, with a beautiful shine. But here (street dirt, sweat, helmet) I wash it with a combi of baking soda and organic conditioner one week, and the other week I wash it with a mild shampoo (dr. Organic) I dilute it with a lot of water in a water bottle first.

But I don't buy products here anymore, I tried many brands, but they all gave my scalp a reaction. (even the health store brands)

Btw about Coconut oil shampoo in Chiang Mai: try the Sunday walking street, about 200 m from the Thapae Gate, on the north side of the street. A man sells natural cosmetics. Low table, small stall.

  11. Hi Thaifan2, I've seen your ad, I know every online ad by heart wink.gif

    This needs explanation:

The house looks nice but a few things made me wonder if I could live there long term. Kitchen, decoration & furniture: I liked it. But I'm not sure if it's bright enough and the neighbours seem to be pretty close on both sides, and not a lot greenery around the house.

And 10 km from city would be like 2x the distance from moat to Meechok Plaza.

I won't be needing the Honda btw. So Thaifun2, I really thought seriously about your house. And I will keep it in mind for sure. Thanks for reminding me.

I'm just very serious and picky about the house, because last couple of years I did some experimenting with different accommodations and I just know what will work for me. Besides that, I'll be at home a lot, so I don't want to compromise too much, or else I have to move out again. And I'm really done with that.

  12. You know, Elektrified, I know this advice is given a lot, but driving around has never lead me to a house I liked. Houses look beautiful from the outside, but inside it's old & dark.

The house I put as an example is bright, without any colourful experiments going on. I haven't seen a house in this price range that I liked immediately.

  13. I order my Indonesian products online in Holland, works great!

Nothing available here, think Thai's don't like Indonesian food!

It is surprising that Thais are not familiar with tempeh, it would be such a great ingredient in Thai dishes. Besides... it is healthy, cheap, filling... I am sure they'd love it.

@winnie: in general Thai friends love foreign food, but Indofood seemed to be forgotten here. Several Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian restaurants, but no toko Indonesia...blink.gif

    How to make tempeh:

    Suddenly I crave for a crusty tempeh-sandwich... thanks-a-lot.

  14. I think I read every topic about rentals on this forum... and now I am posting my own.

    I'm looking for:

    -2 bedrooms/ 2 bathrooms

    -Bright

-Modern Western bathrooms (!) and kitchen (old bathrooms and outside kitchen are a big no-no)

    -Some greenery around the house

-Out of town, 15 min. with motorbike to town (or longer, if the house is worth it)

    Price-indication:

Un- or half furnished (AC, fridge, stove): 5,000 baht

    Furnished: 7,000 baht per month

In some cases I can stretch my budget slightly.

Something like this (I was a day too late for this one)

    http://thprp.org/property-10014/

    For 1+ year contract.

I am a nice and quiet (actually: the PERFECT) neighbour.

I like to think that I know every online real estate agency in CM, so if you've seen a house for rent that will fit my needs, please post or PM me.

The one leading me to the right house will be 'rewarded' (good food, or something I make. No, I don't knit woolen earmuffs...)

  15. "Classical music

Payap University puts on regular classical music concerts at their Mae Khao Campus. The Chiang Mai Symphony Orchestra holds regular concerts at Kad Suan Kaew’s theater. Additionally, a group called Friends of Chiang Mai Music regularly brings in classical musicians from Bangkok for small shows. Both of these run their announcements in the community happenings page of the Chiang Mai Mail online and CityNow online."

    I found this on Thaivisa.
