  1. i'm always shocked when i hear of (and thank god rarely ever see) a dwelling where an adult Westerner in Thailand lives in a single room with no separate bedroom and no separate kitchen, only a single room. students in State or junior colleges in the USA or students in Europe don't even live to such low standards. how could anyone ever live that way?

  2. I am looking for 4-5000 baht condo with AC and balcony in CM , 6 months contract or more , someone mentioned near KSK, can anyone send me a link so I can find it online, names etc ? I am not familiar with the area , thanks.

ahhh the guy who cheered and threw a party when the innocent Burmese were convicted. don't bother coming...

  3. No need to file the return if you have no income to report, They will however send you another one next year (according to my experience).

Thank you! I worry I may get fined for not submitting.

I hope you understand that the IRS classifies income as earned and unearned. I assume you live in Thai so how do you live without any income ? I can see you not having a w2 or self employed income etc. ( earned ) but no unearned like SS, Pension , interest on savings ( in Thai or the states ) , dividends etc. You have the booklet , I would suggest reading the easy to follow instructions on who has to file and what is considered income. I assume you are retired , so for example if your only income is SS you don't have to file. Again assuming you are retired here on a retirement visa using the 800k in the Thai bank method you may not have to file with the IRS but you must file the FBAR with the Treasury Dept. Why you may ask - it is the US law that requires all US citizens no matter where they live to report to the Treasury once a year if they have more than 10,000$ in total any where outside of the US -- severe penalties for not filling

what are you on about???? IRS in Thailand?

  4. I really don't care about Evenstevens writing style, I am just happy that the prices are not what I remember from my one and only visit to the Raintree years ago. Under 200 baat is par for a course of western food these days in town, even at the venerable Stube. Now I don't often eat western food when in-country, but there are those rare occasions so for 200 baat it would save me a trip into the city. Of course in Mae Rim Plaza you can always get one of the best khao soi dishes around for a mere 40 baat.

I've heard a few people mention the Khao Soi at Mae Rim Plaza--do you know the name offhand? Sounds like a good option.
Northeast corner of the plaza facing east, the only establishment that faces east in that northern building block. It is just up from the bank entrance. Family use to own the property and run the same style restaurant, it was a real hole-in-the-wall where you could end up sitting next to the Nai Amphoe, on the main road where the bank is now located. They are a Mae Rim institution and I have been eating their khao soi for over 25 years now. Great food and great people.

By the way, great newer khao man kai place along the east canal road just north of the plaza across from the new hotel they are finishing up on the west side of the canal road. Open until about 3PM. Again, great people and great food. No real sign other than banner sign in Thai on the road noting khao man kai. The shop is on the down slope from the road.

Oh okay I remember the Khai soi place from pre-Mae rim plaza, will give it another visit soon. Khao man gai also sounds like a good option.

forget khao soi. you can find that crap anywhere. if at Mae Rim Plaza, then Steak of the Day is the place to go. the owner Ray, is a real trained chef, and a very nice guy. i believe he used to be the chef at one of the Four Seasons. i don't like dining out much in C.M. and seldom ever do as mostly the food is so bad, but Steak of the Day has to be one of the better restaurants in this city. it's always packed in there.

  5. You could always try chateau Lamphun. Their mulberry wine isn't too bad as an alternative. You can go and visit their winery, have lunch and try their products.

Prices used to be about 270 baht a bottle.

could you provide contact details? thank you. (tried some provided by Thai friends and although not special it was O.K. with Thai food).

  6. certainly that's not as bad as the hidden camera footage that was shown on one of those late night news programs about a week ago of Chinese defecating on the grounds of Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai! that was disgusting. dirty people! they also showed footage of them camping on the grounds of other temples, throwing out their dirty dish water, children urinating, before the police came to kick them out.

  7. don't know what's happened but over the last couple of weeks it seems that most of the groups related to C.M. and Krabi have been taken over by Russians or people from former Soviet Union countries.

in fact there is so much Russian traffic on those groups now that i'm constantly getting ads to "meet Ukrainian ladies"!

Actually, you get ads served based on your personal interests, so I guess you spend your time on datingsites. That's how Google Adsense works. Your neigbor who gets turned on by motorbikes gets ads about motorbikes.

have never been on a "dating site" ever.

  9. lately i've noticed on the internet and other publications, a large Russian community here in C.M.(i've never even noticed them at immigration, etc.) but there is a very large community here so it seems.

but what i don't understand is how can they be renting out and even 'selling' so many properties? surely this can't be legal is it? and it's not only here, it's going on in Krabi, Pattaya, etc. i hadn't opened my FB in a few days and tonight when i logged on i was bombarded with posts from various groups of Russian's selling properties. there is even a 18 y/o Russian kid selling a property in Pattaya for 15,500,000.00 Bath. they are openly doing this on FB. surely they must be targets for the authorities, no?

  10. Its more bakery supplies but still a good place to visit even if its just to see what they have. Not as many products as say the main supermarket chains but they do sometimes have items that you cant find elsewhere. A bit cheaper than Rimping too.

Food items are downstairs whereas a lot of catering gear is upstairs.

Its on the Super highway just about opposite Macro.

never knew there was an "upstairs" there....

  11. the water office is in Mae Rim if you live around the MEEChok plaza area. i know very far but that is where it is first light after police station go down to the Mae rim four season ,water dept on the road to the riright before the right turn to to the four seasons

no... i live right there and pay my bill (if i forget to go to 7-Eleven) at the office near Tesco Lotus. that is our office to pay the bill.

  12. i sometimes make my own in the blender too. but i order from King and usually request 30% cashews and very little brown sugar. usually comes the next day or at the most 2 days after order is placed.

never had an issue with the packaging. it comes in a bag inside a plastic bucket inside a box.

  13. you need to call CMU small animal hospital on Canal Road and ask when a doctor who treats chickens will be there. they have doctors who treat anything from turtles to elephants, but some are only there 2 times per month.

wife just informed me that doctor who treats birds is usually in on Wednesday 9-12. but you should call to be sure schedule has not changed.

  14. OMG, in Thailand people are allowed to carry like that guns? please advise me is this true or not?

many do. i was absolutely shocked a number of years ago while visiting friends in Bangkok who are quite conservative normal, upper middle-class people with adult children. we took a drive 90 minutes or so out of Bangkok and after a number of telephone calls we pulled over on the side of the road and a woman got in the car. my friend's wife reached in her purse and pulled out some large, bank-bound stacks of cash and handed it to the woman and had her sign some papers. i could not help but notice a handgun in her purse similar to the one in the photo in this thread. when we returned to their home i asked my friend why his wife carries a piece. he told me that every month his wife pays more than 70 Cambodian factory workers who make clothes for her and they all know what day she comes, and that is one reason why her foreman meets her somewhere different each time. the gun - in case someone follows the foreman - "you never know".

also practically every gold shop owner and their spouse all carry a gun. fairly common here.
