  1. The richest person I know is also the biggest miser I have ever had the misfortune to meet He is absolutely obsessed with not spending money.

In England he would come into our local buy a half of lager an make it last 3 hours. He has worn the same clothes for years, drives an old banger is always quick to ask someone to buy a drink but never returns the favour.

When I lived in England he once asked me to give him a lift to Newcastle airport. I had to get out of bed at 7 am on a Sunday morning, drive to his house collect him and his luggage and then drive to the airport a round trip of nearly 40 miles. A taxi would have cost him 25 pounds and yet the stingy guy he was didn,t even offer me a fiver for my petrol.

When in Thailand he knocks on my door every afternoon to pick up my Bangkok post.

He has no dependants and is not married so when he dies someone else will get to spend his money.

    He,s not a minimalist he,s a miser.

  2. There is another that has not been mentioned, it used to be on Pattaya nua, part of the Success Inn shop complex.

It moved a few months ago to soi pothisan, naklua.

If you turned right at the traffic lights on the main naklua road in to soi pothisan, the shop would be a little way up on the left hand side

I have not been there for some time so unaware whether it is still there, used to have a reasonable selection of books

It han,t been mentioned because it closed about 18 months ago.

The guy that ran it now runs the stall at the dolphin roundabout which has been mentioned in this thread already.

Henry at Pattaya Auction House also has a book section which you can buy books the have already been through the auction but didn,t sell.

  3. I have lost my mc key , the only one I have.

I will have to push it tomorrow to whoever can supply me with a new key.

Can any of the lock smiths in Pattaya meke a new key for the current lock or will I need to wheel it to a Yamaha main dealer to replace both the lock and key?

  4. Wait until next month an you will get a new bill with the total for 2 months. Yeah, I know, but the Thais do it all the time and they never lose water service.

Don't know if they have a different rule for foreigners then but even if you miss a single payment the will come and cut you off. They definitely don't mess about or simply add it to the next bill. A colleague had is disconnected this month over a missed b85 bill.

Oh btw thanks to everyone for the directions. I found it and paid them.

  5. Normally I just go to the 7/11 shop but on my way today i lost the bill.

I have got last months bill and presume I can go to the water authority office and I can pay there. Does anyone know where it is?

Last time I missed a payment I had someone come round to cut me off and I had to pay a B500 penalty even though the bill was only for B85.

  6. What has happened since this post?

Has the OP received his free subway roll?

What happened to the staff member concerned?

    What action has Subway taken?

Am I at risk of being assaulted going into the Tipp Subway store?

    I would like to know.

    1. I was contacted by both Sunbelt Asia and the franchise holder of the store and kindly offered vouchers/a free sub but I said it wasn't necessary they were just as much a victim as this guys criminal behaviour as myself.

    2. The member of staff in question was dismissed over the incident.

    3. I have returned to this store many times since and received nothing but excelent service.

    4. The lunatic is long gone. Don't let this isolated incident colour your opinion of this outlet.

Mods - Can we please close this thread - It was dead and buried long ago tand we are now just going round in circles.

  7. If I'm walking by and I see someone being attacked, someone trying to steal a car or someone trying to break into someones house then yes I will still intervene.

Sometimes it is more advantageous to be a witness to a crime rather than a hero.

A dead hero who became involved in a vicious crime is of no use in any subsequent court case.

On the other hand, a good observant witness will remember details of the crime, have a good description of the offender, record the registration number of the get-away vehicle etc. etc. and live to enjoy another day.

Sorry sir, I just stood by while some chav broke into your car and sped away to perhaps commit even more serious crimes.

Don't worry though I got the registration number. :o:D

  8. WOW!! Sound likes the Subway shop from hel_l. Lucky you. If I were you I would that place a wide wide Berth for a long while. :D:o:D

This thread has been resurrected for what reason I know not what but as the original poster let me tell you what happened.

    1. I was contacted and offered free subs by both Sunbelt Asia and the franchise holder although as I explained to them at the time it wasn't necessary as they were not in any way responsible for the incident it was the one guy.

    2. I have continued to patronise this outlet over the past 13 months when I've been in Pattaya and have received nothing but excellent service since.

    3. This guy was an a$$hole and both Subway and myself were victims of his criminal behaviour. (theft and assualt)

    4. The guy was quite rightly sacked over the incident.

    5. I couldn't have given a toss over the free sub. There was some guy(the franchise owner) who like me was trying to make an honest living in Pattaya and was being systematicall robbed by people he was employing. Two purchases two weeks apart were both rung in as 15b water instead of 199b sandwiches. This guy was being swindled by his staff and the scam probably added up to a few thousand baht a month. This wasn't a victimless crime. I have been a victim of crime on several occasions in my life (cars stolen, burgled, rolled when drunk) and I have nothing but contempt for the people who purpetrate such activities. If I'm walking by and I see someone being attacked, someone trying to steal a car or someone trying to break into someones house then yes I will still intervene.

    6. Mister Fingers and StickkettleOn (Post #59 in this thread) are whose stupid posts I did not think worthy of a response at the time.

  9. Sorry guys, I am getting ready to close this thread .

    OK ????

Ah! it looks as though we may never know if the OP got his free sandwich..........or if the male employee has been relegated to water duties only............or if indeed Jeffrey Archer has contemplated this as a basis for a new world busting novel..........or if the sign has been mysteriously removed :o

At thetime of speaking I've had no response from Subway or from the franchisee or my free 6 inch sub

  10. I am confused as I personally have never kept a reciept for food at any restaurant unless I was working, but this guy is so sad he checks his receipt for a sandwich? Either he is used to being ripped off - which is sad -but in this case he wasn't. I feel sorry for his missus everytime they go shopping, it must double their journey time as he has to check off every single item on his receipt. I am sorry but I think that is Icecubes is an EX TAX INSPECTOR. Cos this is fun town, where we have fun!

The reason I checked it was that there was a sign in the shop saying check your receipt free 6 inch sub of your choice if incorrect.

I wasn't ripped off for sure I paid my money and received my sandwich but have no qualms about reporting this jerk. He tried to assault me and should not be allowed to get away with it.

  11. Thanks for your support Sunbeltasia and your pm raro as well as o everybody else who has supported me on this thread.

I have e-mailed subway and asked that they contact the franchise owner regarding this matter.

I have just checked the receipts I recieved again and even the second receipt (the one for 199 baht) is annotated "receipt has been reprinted" and is actually from an earlier sale at 6:30 pm. (I was in the shop at midnight).

I will keep both receipts and will happily hand them over along with a detailed report of the incident if and when the franchisee contacts me.

I take exception to be treated like this when all I am doing is actually trying to spend money in somebody's business.

I have no qualms about standing up to this jerk - his behaviour was nothing short of disgusting and he could have caused me a serious injury had his fist connected.

  12. A couple of weeks ago I bought a subway sandwich from Tipp Plaza. The next day when I was going through my pocket I found that the receipt I had been given was for a 15 baht water rather than the 199 baht sandwich I ordered - an obvious staff fiddle.

This evening I went back and ordere another sandwich. I noticed a sign saying check your receipt if incorrect free 6 inch sub of your choice.

On receiving my sandwich initially the guy serving didn't hand over the receipt. I asked for it and in view of what happened the previous time I checked my receipt and surprise surprise it was for 15 baht water. I pointed this out to him and he immediately rang in another sale on the till for the correct 199 baht price.

I ponted out that the initial receipt was wrong and asked for my free 6 inch sub. This he refused to give me.

I went back to my motorcycle took out a pen and paper from the box and went back in the shop and wrote down the number to call if there are any problems.

When I was getting back on the bike the guy serving came racing out the shop and actually tried to punch me. I ducked put my bike in gear and left.

    Is this typical of Subway?

I realize that Subway are one of the sponsers for this board. If anyone in a management position at Subway would like to pm me I will happily meet with them to discuss this mattyer in more detail.

I cannot believe this guy's behaviour.

  13. Tim agogo on second road is a cracking place to watch football. Massive screen, cheap draught beer and sexy ladies thrown into the mix. I go there every weekend.

As for more blues than reds - I doubt it. Man Utd are always well supported in there when I go to watch the footies.

Other than that The Premiership Bar on Soi Diana Inn is quite a good second choice.

  14. It's very naughty!

Turn left at the lights by the motorcycle shop if coming from Pattaya, and you'll find a row of bars on the left about 400 meters up the road.

    It's not what you'd call a high-class set-up, but I hear it's great fun!

There's a Scottish-run bar in the middle does a buffet etc if you feel the need for sustenance after your exertions

Thanks for the info. I made a visit this afternoon and it was well worth the trip out.

  15. And the Mermaid round the lake.

Get yourselves out to Bang Chang for a day/night out, the strip there was good fun last visit a year ago, and I hear a few new attractions in the offing, planning a road trip there myself. (I have been living in Issan now for the last 4 years, and enjoying it, 10 years of Pattaya was enough for me! )

    Tap Dam

Where exactly in Bang Chang is "the strip"? I pass through Bang Chang twice a week on the way to and from work and would like to check out the bars there.

  16. And talking of businesses for sale, after reading adverts for business for sale on certain sites, they say they are making money, not a great return but a fair return. These companies must be telling fibs from what I read on here. I was wondering what most of the posters on here do for work, if you dont own a business you must be working for someone, or have most of you retired due to age.

    Steve

There are many businesses making money in Pattaya and by and large they are not for sale. People do not sell successful businesses and nobody advertises an unsuccessful business for sale truthfully (I am losing/ have lost my life savings and want somebody to take it off me).

Have a look round at the businesses that are not for sale. What are they doing that you could replicate or even improve on?

I went into business here by doing just that and am happy with my returns so far.

Some businesses that seem to be doing okay in Pattaya from what I can see:-

    Motorcycle rental

    McDonalds franchise

    Subway franchise

    7/11 franchise

    2nd hand bookstores

    Cafes with cheap English food

    Gymnasiums

  17. For most farangs buying a bar in Pattaya turns out to be the worst decision since Gary Glitter decided to get his computer serviced.

Some however (under 10%) do manage to make a living out of it. If you are to be successful spend a lot of time looking for the right bar and a lot of time checking out the bars that are being run successfully. If you can put your finger on what makes them a success(location, ownner's personality, ambience, good food, dart league member, outgoing and vivacious staff) and can replicate the formula in your own bar you may have a chance.

I couldn't do it and wouldn't even risk trying but as I've said a very small percentage do make it.
