  1. Pizza is the latest fad up in isaan with it being ruined with ketchup and mayo sauce, i can see Thais getting fat eating this bread

Yes agreed many places. But surely not all. Just need to stay away from the Tourist places. Like Udon, there are 2 spots but unfortunately in the Lady Bar areas or (same) downtown. Issan & non franchise places in the south make coffee, truly original. Western people/Tourists tend to get spoiled with their where. The coffee (cafe) here is easily better then any American franchise & food, either Thai or Mexican - a USA comparison (all USA food is Mexican & so miss thus US cooks, if not flavor, than culture). Up toYou.

But 'Skint' talking of ketchup & mayo must be a 'dive'. Same recipe for the US Franchise Giant, "Papa Johns".

Best bet to ignore all corporations & go with the smaller guys.

  2. insurrect

What word association is that with "incorrect", think "Rebellion" would be the better reply.

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Insurrect is an English word and it rhymes with incorrect. It is thus perfectly acceptable. SC who began the thread has stated on more than one occasion that there are no rules. Insurrect should stand - as should it's immediate successor 'ion'

Or go and start your own thread (for dummies maybe)

Just to point out, unless your a poet made for dummies, insurrect does not rhyme with incorrect...but either way you made yourself quite clear of your literary intelligence.

  3. So many great previous & current series out there. Such as & including completed HBO's "The Wire"; then unknown if continuing "Boardwalk Empire" & is continuing "Game of Thrones" (a given Must); Showtime's "Ray Donovan"; AMC's "Hell on Wheels", "The Walking Dead", "The Killing"; then the rest, "House of Cards" (Kevin Spacey), "Boss" (Kelsey Grammer). From what I heard, the current TV Series adaptation of the movie "Fargo", of which the series is of the same name is a must get.

  4. Just a question as I'm happily married, if the house is in the wife's name, how can the house be considered a shared asset...in Thailand. I here of stories where once the Thai woman has everything - house built to quality & car, they'll just kick out their foreign husband or bf?

All assets of married people in Thailand, purchased during the marriage, are considered joint until clear evidence is produced during divorce to prove otherwise.

If a house was purchased during the Thai/foreigner marriage, the Thai claiming sole ownership would be required to prove the source of funding, else the ruling would most likely be 50/50. If the foreigner could prove they provided the funding 100%, then the house would be ordered sold, and the money refunded to the foreigner.

Boyfriends have no such protection and may be removed from a property in a Thai national's name at any time just by a request to the local police.

You may have noticed, PM Yingluck isn't married, probably because she didn't want to share the money coming in, and/or didn't want a situation to ever occur where she was required to produce a list of her assets and their source.

Thank you...always good between the many useless posts I come across or post, there's a member who will give me a useful education. :)

  5. Of course never lend money which you will never see again, family, friends questionable, but Thais absolute. If anything for principle sake. Paid labour for gardening, 1000 is ridiculous, tell her 300 baht a day; and she doesn't like it, say, "okay, I'll get a Burmese who will do it for less".

  6. Hispanics number 53 million in America ....that's 17% http://www.infoplease.com/spot/hhmcensus1.html

Expats living in Thailand ....maybe 200,000 (Wikipedia) and tourists approx 2 million each year and growing

Your comparison has no merit as does your thought that a few hundred thousand expats could alter the course of Thailand....as said before much NEEDS to be done ....BUT getting the Thai government to do it.....well its depends on who's in control and how much they can put in their pockets.

Sorry its not on the positive note you want .....but reality is reality

Given your number of 53 million is a census polling, think that number is much greater with maybe at least 30 million illegals with either no papers or fake identities (barred from being profiled) (but the fake identity population will be mixed in with the census poll). But...the US Gov (outside the public eye) including State & local; corporations, media, businesses & churches welcome them arms wide. The Gov crackdown is a sham for the rest of the sheep.

In contrast, Thailand, an illegal foreigner will be heavily fined or jailed and/or deported or banished. Here we are not welcome, as we have to either, jump thru many hoops with immigration or pay a third party a thousand USD a year to stay without dealing with immigration. Things to change are no change because they will never be change. We are only tolerated as long as we spend. Pollution galore, burning fires, whether agriculture, backyard shrubbery or front yard trash, double standard commerce bordering on racism & forever endless greed. It is the culture of this country and culture never changes.

  7. just continue to stay calm and keep in mind in the legal system she has no grounds to divorce you or at the very least it will be years in the future.

also money to support your kids is not calculated as percentage of salary, but on costs of living with bkk being highest with perhaps some 20-30k per month for 2 kids till 18 years or so old including school etc...

of course all assets after marriage may have to be shared 50/50 like house car etc, but example you wanna move back to your country with 1 kid so sell house and you will have a good deal of cash recovered in your half while of course the wife may think she can keep all & not able to pay you your half of the house value!!

although your wife seem to behave a bit violent it seems you have still some control but slow down see how it looks after staying apart a while. let her know you will support kids, but cut or stop all support to wife for now and take it from there...

it may also be that in the end you can find a way back together again if this is more like a extreme situation which will not get worse?

in this case you may consider family therapy/counseling...

    best of luck

  8. In Isan right now. Just at a place that had a Thai Chicken & Green Curry pizza with fresh basil leaves laid out on top of the cheese. They told me it was very spicy & when traveling can't do spicy, so no picture. But on the menu, it looked very tasty.

  9. Good point about the forum rules and "no name calling" why is it that oz893 has specifically singled me out as "that old bird NancyL" and said he could see "those little white spittle clumps forming at the corners of your mouth." I can't see where he singled out any of the male contributors to the thread for similar treatment. Actually, I thought my contributions were quite thoughtful. I even did some research on his behalf, what with buying movie tickets on line for the first time, just to show it could be done with my U.S. issued credit card. (Noah wasn't that good; wish I'd seen Captain America instead. It would have been more in keeping with the theme of this thread!)

@Nancy, Dont know why. I agree you provided good information. The OP (Oz893) took everything personal. He is upset because I said about standard practice to let your banks know. Guess he don't realize that when someone is posting it's not just for them but for others viewing the post too. Allot of people coming to Thailand for the first time check forums doesn't matter where they are going they will check forums related to that country to be informed. Sometimes they are first time travelers. One of these days he will realize this. I see your posts from time to time on TV and believe you provide good info, so don't worry about him.

Why would she, forums are for general discussion & free minds...freedom of speech. Educated in whichever areas or just experiences of various values. Most information travelers can pick up anywhere. People relying strictly on TV are not people whom should be traveling without chaperones. There was once, before blogs, forums, websites...something called, "Traveling and broadening your mind".

Though your expression of pure insecurity in order to save face, is quite funny. :))

  10. I will give you my thoughts.

1: you should have called the police.

2: they probably took you to a state hospital. Where they penny pinch.

3: you should have asked for X-ray for your G/f.

4: you should have also asked the hospital to call the police also or you should have told your g/f to call the police at the hospital.

Forgive me but I think you are a bit dumb.

There is something called "Shock" case you're unaware of the term. In those Hospitals ("Government", they don't have State Hosp in Thailand) there's a very small percentage who speak English, which could add to the confusion & sudden culture shock but I think more the Hosp itself if it's the 1st time you've been in a 3rd world Hosp where their is usually just one doctor on staff.

Common practice would be to just clean & bandage up the cuts/wounds.

The hospitals is not obligated to involve the police & without a police number or the ability to speak Thai, the victim's friend calling would be pointless, or even filing a report would've been useless. How many people as a tourist knew the police phone number & the ability to speak Thai. Proper procedure would be to go to the police station the next day & speak to a English speaking officer.

"Shaurene", apparently you know nothing about this country.

    Oz893

I really just made of common sense suggestions. I said for him to ask them call police, you know, put your hand to your ear like phone and say police and dial your finger mate. Finger talk works when you try it works. I am 73 lived here 12 yrs learnt a lot seen a lot, worked in so many countries and did not speak their tongue but managed with fingers and signs. Worked all the time and gave them a laugh mate, try it before you shout your mouth off. My old Dad told me to put your brain into operation before you open your mouth.. If they all had your knowledge it would be a waste of time for people to ask other people for advice.

The thing is these people were from what I read in the OP, under-educated tourists with Thailand, so to complain about actions taken after an traumatic accident in a foreign country is quite rude or insulting. Understand comments after of the "why this & that", & with response I agree, but to judge them as response & actions just after the accident & in all the confusion with the hospital scene is very mean. When bleeding & in much pain, not to mention dazed & frustrated, you can't just pick up a phone & dial a number you don't know & speak a language which you also don't know. Police in Thai is not same in English & in a tonal pronunciation. Then there's the guy on the other side of the line. How will you say, your at the hospital & what hospital & what happened? You going to take one of the frantic English speaking workers away from another patient or ask the doctor, "pardon me, I know your patient is dying but can you make a call for me?"

  12. My point, Thailand is one of the safest countries I've been to in quite awhile, Japan was also very safe if not more. In hotels all throughout I can leave apple laptops, iPads left out to charge, money left on the table. Before I locked my passport up. Now know, just like foreign credit or debit cards, foreign passports are of no value to the common Thai thief. I just throw them in any unlocked drawer. Had issues with one BK security guard, but being drunk I have to take blame. Otherwise in BK, been drugged and robbed at the bars (as the police would say after the the report was finished, "Farangs are always robbed...hahaha"), actually looking back other than the house/apt burglaries & assorted "stick up" type robberies in Krabi (smaller villages, not Ao Nang, but Phuket is a whole other issue), has been pretty tame if you just stay away from the tourist infested bars/areas.

  13. Maybe she fell Asleep under a bench, leaving all her things out in the open somewhere far off & of course making sure to empty all her pockets into her handbag, then push that out of reach as well...or maybe she was under the influence, lost her stuff & then cried wolf.

Definitely her fault regardless, you don't fall asleep leaving your stuff unattended. First all your wallet/purse or money & all cards should be on your person as well as your passport & ticket. Stupid girl.

Thais don't openly steal in public, (referring a entire country, the Thai race, is well we all know) especially at the most tourist-mania airport & the middle-upper class, Thai Swamy - if anyone would have stolen from her it would've been tourists. Even the poor employees - likely not, just like with all the hotels they're too afraid of losing their jobs. Only exceptions would be those places in some of the more poorer locales or lawless towns or mafia controlled regions, such as many parts of Krabi. Interesting, I find the Isan region probably the most safe in Thailand with the reverse being the South.

  14. There seems to be trend on Thai Visa Forum that the victim is at fault. This must be posted by farangs who do not feel good about themselves. Perhaps they are alcoholics or are here for sex tourism. Perhaps they feel bad about themselves because they could not find work in their home countries. At any rate they are transferring the bad feelings they have about themselves to others.

PLEASE STOP BECAUSE YOUR CRITICISM IS NOT CONSTRUCTIVE.

In this case one could say

Wear brighter clothing or have a flashing red -light as a precaution.

Insist at the hospital to have sufficient exams made - if necessary lay down and scream as if in pain.

While the victims were being examined you could have recruited a Thai speaking friend who knows English and gone to the police station.

It is unlikely that I would have had the presence of mind to do any of these things because I was the victim in a motorbike accident. I avoided sufficient examinations partly because I was too stunned to realise I had been unconscious. Luckily there was nothing seriously wrong and a very good doctor at a private clinic cured all my small problems arising from this accident.

Although the motorbike that collided with mine came from a side street without looking the police said it was my fault because I was going too fast. I was not because I know I was going about 40 km/hr and there were no skid marks and when I came to I was still on the motorbike. Thankfully i had knocked the offending parties fender off and caused him to go to ground. He was sufficiently good to come and check on my condition but he was so dumb not to look if any traffic was coming. Many side streets do not have stop signs and even if they do how many times have you seen someone actually stop at one ?

You're really clueless about this country. The old & longtime saying here, many ways very true in how assuring it is to know how little rights you have here. Which is close to none unless your very rich. Is "if the Farang (white foreigner) wasn't there, it would never have happened." You can be walking down the street & get robbed...you know where they work, can identify their face...means nothing unless you want to pay for the investigation or better yet make it viral (probably get banned from the country for such an action as well) & the publicly will force a free investigation. Foreigners here are barely guests, barely tolerated unless your generating large sums of money for them - actively that it, not as a tourist, business owner (owners of bars, restaurants, small remote hotels or hostels) or retiree.

Grow a brain or go home back to your narrow minded life.

  15. Wouldn't be hard to beat that mostly inedible garbage produced by Pizza Co.

Nitrite-stick crust & fake mayonnaise, then squeeze 12 packs of tomato ketchup on it and destroy. ;-)

  16. All the chains, to the least as another poster put, more specially, the crust tastes literally like cardboard. The sauce is flavorless, the cheese is like a greasy plastic & the additional toppings are just extra pieces of flavorless cardboard. Though when been drinking & have the craving, there's nothing else. Think I saw a few nicer looking place in or around or off Sukhumvit. Crust, sauce, toppings no difference...the cheese though was a processed Mozzy & the price was even more hilarious.

  17. Correction & Apologizes to Tourists for the hasty post. Members, well, too many Trolls to sort thru.

I 'higher up' representative called me last night from the East Coast HQ. Apparently previous information provided by the lower-end representatives were incomplete. This was just happening to me, at some point (probably just before April) my overseas status was removed from my account. Though the ATM was working all Credit Transactions were blocked. Still wasn't explained why they were blocked before leaving Thailand thus no records with the US Bank & also doesn't explain why it was only happening in Thailand. But the Rep said he reapplied the overseas status & everything should be fine now. Haven't tried yet. But letting it go just the same.

Sorry, retract "Trolls" and replace with "only those Idiots members who don't read the OP & just post irrelevant information"

If there is an Admin around, please close the post.

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

You should not call members idiots because they did not ready through the entire thread before making a comment. Allot of us work during the day so only read posts later and post a comment before reading through 3-4 pages. calling someone like me an "idiot" because I posted before I read the complete post is wrong. I dont always have time to read all the pages which most of the time is dribble bickering between members. I think another apology is due.

No apology for someone implying I said something that I didn't or that I don't know how to travel outside my own country. But if I did travel so far without informing my bank, ATM access would also be blocked. I would get a message at the ATM display advising me to contact my bank. But to be polite, I will agree to retract that term, "Idiots" and replace it with "mis-informed, slow, forgetful or just lazy".

Otherwise, apology to the tourists, but as far as most members, they're already well informed enough to read & then shrug it off. What's left is as you say, many bickering members (irrelevant) or people talking about something that is a non-discussion point to the OP (like you, no offense).

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Your ATM can still work but with a limited amount with your Visa being blocked. My post said that my ATM works in Thailand but my visa does not because my bank sees Thailand as a high risk. Go check my post again. Where did I say you said something that you didn't? Also, forum rules say no name calling so you are breaking forum rules. This is suppose to be an informative forum.

"Ericthai", you just got caught up in the carnage dealing with that old bird, NancyL. The point was this discussion wasn't anything about ATM, Transfers or really if you read the OP, even about US banks or the US Gov. Words due come into play, but merely reference not to the least effect a discussion point. Initially a "being careful" suggestion was posted that travelers shouldn't just rely primarily on credit cards, should always have ATM access (should also be less fees). Just a caution note regardless the situation but outside the OP.

With my B of A account, I have both an ATM & Visa Debit. That was a concern before, now I can just transfer the money when in a pinch.

My main reproach with you was, "I really think it's your bank" & "As always anyone traveling needs to contact their credit card companies and let them know they are traveling, where and when..standard practice." But the last I let go due to the bird.

With the OP, the transactions never got past the Thai Banks, there was no record whatsoever with the US Banks, either by phone representative (HQ Branch or home Branch) or online banking. No alerts on the account period, absolutely pristine! And NO explanation why only Thailand was singled out. Been here short of a year and it just started happening this month.

I'm part of a large credit union that stated no issue with Thailand. Was confirmed by HQ, once I setup my (forms & verified) TH account, I can "SWIFT" transfer $50,000 in a couple days for only $20 with no "other" or "hidden" fees. Thailand is not a risk country for them, but they do have a few plants here.

Definitely Thai banks. Hope you see my frustration. Done with this topic.
