  1. It's just fun and games. Lazyness maybe? Most young guys I've been to gogo bars with understand the rules of the game much better than older guys.

Yeah, what could possibly be the allure of young, Thai girls all over you while you have some beers and some laughs with your friends?

exactly. I don't understand why - as in this OP - there is a feeling that there must be some obscure reason as to why young guys are in the bars. beer + women + friends = happy. it's not rocket science.

    Affordability?

I'm finding flights are costing 50 - 100% more than 5 years ago.

Was 73 bht v £1, now just 48. Not as affordable as it was.

yep, the £ is a joke at the moment but the political instability in thailand might help the pound claw back some ground.

  2. Sounds like you were very close to finding some cool places. A few blocks west would have become quite lively. Taking a walk around the east side of the moat will usually result in finding all sorts of clubs, restaurants, and bars of all kinds. There are lots of great places scattered all over the city. Just put on your walking shoes, and check them out. There's lots of fun things to do here.

well, I'm gonna be in CM again at the end of june (en route to mae hong son) so I'll take another look around.

I'm well aware that CM is not on a par with BKK or pattaya for lively nightlife - but I still expected a bit more than I saw on my first couple of visits.

  3. Many thanks so plenty of places to get phone or take old phone with me ive lost 2 b4 under the influence :) so just take old thing

will the shop do the SIM for me etc & put the 00844 for me ?

    Cheers

you can try the shop - depending on how busy they are they might set up the SIM for you. BG's are actually useful for setting up SIM cards - saying that, they probably come with english language instructions too so can't see that they'd be too technical.

as fedob43 mentioned, just add 00844 at the start of your numbers for discount rates (remembering to omit the 0 from the dialling code):

    eg

UK number you want to call is 01678 893467

    just dial 008441678 893467

as I mentioned, there could be other discount prefixes but 008 is the one I use. I'm with DTAC but possibly other companies have different discount codes. the shop you buy it from or BG's should be able to help.

I use my old contract phones from UK when in thailand - no need to buy a new phone if you've an old one lying around. just make sure it's unlocked.

  4. a fun bar in CM? well there's a first.

I've been to CM twice now and was told that the main bar area was down some narrow soi (sorry don't know the name) which has an open area at the end with a boxing ring iirc. bars were nothing special.

I expected CM to have better nightlife - was very disappointed tbh. I asked a few locals for the bar area but kept getting pointed towards the same soi.

maybe some of you guys know other parts of town that have a bit of life?

  5. as previous posts have suggested - take your (unlocked) phone from home with you and buy a thai SIM for as little as THB50.

calls and SMS to home (UK) are cheap and the SIM purchase is well worth it. as previously mentioned use the 00844 prefix to call (I think there are other prefixes too, possibly depending on mobile company).

you can even buy a basic new mobile if you want for less than THB1000.

  6. I must touch on the fact that some LB's are absolutely massive, I mean, way bigger than the average thai bloke. never quite figured that one out.

That was waiting for a comment ... as a gay guy who has seen a LOT of willys ... one of the biggest ones was on a Thai lady-boy. Its annoying when your LB has a bigger willy than you have ...

    Peter

:) ....erm.....ok.....I actually meant height/build of LB's but whatever floats your boat. :D

  7. joking aside - general LB signs:

    wide shoulders

noticeably taller than average thai girls (and blokes in some cases)

    deeper voice

    fake tits

    bigger hands

    bigger feet

    more make-up

    adams apple

and in addition for LB BG's:

    sluttier clothes

    even more make-up

innuendos and suggestive gestures towards straight blokes

I must touch on the fact that some LB's are absolutely massive, I mean, way bigger than the average thai bloke. never quite figured that one out.

  8. tbh the young man in thailand shouldn't really be an alien concept - I'll explain with a little computation:

girls + alcohol = generally happy young (straight) man.

yes women + booze can be found alot closer to home but thailand has all the other things going for it as I mentioned previously - climate, beaches, nightlife, food, cost etc.

  9. the only cheap charlies I see clutching their 711 bought beer Chang outside of any bar like you mentioned - are the 20-30 year olds.

really? you ever been to lamai, koh samui? or patong, phuket? or jomtien? or just about everywhere that has the golden oldies suppin' their big changs at the shop front. :D

If you notice, they also hang around the soi at closing time looking for a used car at a good price.

:) yep, occasionally see the odd youngster hanging around at closing - but the old lads would be too if they could handle the late nights!! they're usually tucked up in bed by 11pm. :D

I think the main reasons more youngsters are seen these days - other than the women - are because A. affordability and B. the other attractions to thailand (sun, beaches, beer, shopping etc).

in days gone by, a holiday in thailand might have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but not these days.

the attraction of women goes hand-in-hand with nice weather, booze, beaches, good food, friendly people etc etc.

there's also a load of backpackers who go round thailand - and SE asia in general - who are liable to prop up the odd beer bar, cash permitting.

  10. I think at the end of the day - just cheaper to travel from diff places mainly because brings affordability more in line for the local population. Thai(s) earn less therefore flights are less.

eh? :) take time to read the initial post instead of panic-posting to up your post count britmav!! :D

This is a question I have asked many times and never had a satisfactory answer, people talk about load factors, competition, taxes and the like, but surly if their are 20 flights a day from London to Bangkok and 20 flights back the costs and competition should be the same. I really don't understand it.

I thought someone might mention this.

my understanding of it is that the majority of the flights thailand-UK will be return legs of flights bought departing from UK, therefore the competition is greater departing from UK, which drives down prices.

  11. thank you very much. i'm hoping to build a bond with you guys so when i make my cherry trip i can meet up with BM to break me in right ROTFLMMFAO :)

good grief - this is a family forum!! :D

  12. back to topic, does anyone know a Travl Agent who can still do the 2 k early flight?

Im afraid the THB2000 early/late flights are a thing of the past my friend.

tbh I thought they went up to approx THB2700 a while ago before going up again to the current THB3000+ mark.

I've got my own views on bangkok airways prices to samui (and it's nothing positive) but this type of thread has been done a load of times with the most recent one just a few weeks ago.

  13. For example, what is the correct word for someone that likes to show off their education by using pompous and nbombastic obscure words?

    ar5ehole.

What is the correct word for a post that epitomises the very defect that it is trying to describe or criticise?

    hypocritical.

  14. this type of thing has happened to me before.

a few years back I went to a late night joint with a mate after a heavy night on the sauce and it was the best late night place I'd been to in BKK. funnily enough, I was drinking in KSR that night too (god forgive me).

it was down a side street, small and dark inside with a low ceiling, as I walked in the bar was on the left and the toilets were to the left of the bar and iirc a floor length mirror beside the toilets. I think there was a small dancefloor and loads of small tables to the right of the bar but people were just dancing wherever. the place was quiet when I got there but as the night went on it busied up with tourists and freelancers as the other bars closed.

the taxi driver took us there so I'd say it's a fair bet that it's well known by taxi drivers and that they'd get a tip for taking punters along.

the atmosphere was good and the night was a total laugh - it was small and didn't have the pretentiousness of some of the other late night joints in bangkok. I've tried many a time to describe the place to people who have tried to take me to various places hoping it's the one I'm thinking of, but it never is!!

it's definitely not in sukhumvit as I'd roughly know the area and as we'd been drinking on KSR I'd imagine it could be somewhere nearby although we did get a taxi.

there seems to be an issue with venue names in bangkok - whether it be boss or bossy or spice or spicey....I don't know...seems like unnecessary complications to me.

I know it's a long shot but does anyone have any idea of the name of the place I was at? I'm not 100% sure but I think it was only 1 floor.

  15. Thanks for turning me on to it Game4Shame! :D

    :)

Yup, the old wing, suits my needs perfectly. AC, cable TV, in room safe, and a unique pool that's a big plus.

Free wifi in lobby, but I'm able to pick it up in my room, but that's not promised.

That said, the standard rooms are not for fussy people, for example, there is no toilet paper holder in the bathroom, actually the entire bathroom is quite basic.

But I really like the place and the location, and the price is right.

the deluxe rooms are only a few hundred THB more a night and they are a fair step up in quality so any fussy customers could opt for them. :D

however, like yourself, the standard rooms suit me fine. the AC, cable, free WIFI, nice pool, friendly staff, price and location are the big plus points.

  16. DO YOU KNOW ANYONE IN ANY OF THE BELOW CATEGORIES?

I would like to say I am pretty cool, but I am still looking for expats to hangout with me

    so modest

*English speaking bachelors ages 21-37 that like to do their fair share of picking up women.

shouldn't be a problem on samui

    *Expats that don't drink much.

    erm..... :D

T.I.T.! enjoy and discover this life!

....and he doesn't mean 'this is thailand'. :)

  17. i am always wondering, that some people think, that gasoline, mini busses, insurance, maintenance for cars, time for the driving

    is for free on Samui.

Why dont these CC´s not buy a car and offer the airport shuttle service themselves for 100 baht per way?

(I dont say 400/500 baht is okay, but a certain amount must be, and this is not at 150/200 baht for a comfortable ride.)

personally, the reason I grudge the cost of samui taxis is because the cost is increased purely to fund the local mafioso - it's loosely relevant to actual journey cost.

these taxis are supposed to be metered and I could count the amount of times I have had the meter turned on in samui on 1 hand with no fingers.

  18. I have stayed in Railey a few times. First time was July 2001 and loved it. Went back again inpeak season and didnt enjoy it as much. But have been back since. Definately one of the most beauiful places i've been in Thailand. But then again around Krabi is pretty special anyway.

agreed. krabi area has - without doubt - the most amazing scenery I've seen in thailand.

I went on the hong island tour from ao nang and the water was crystal clear near the island beaches with tropical fish visible just a few feet from the shore. :)

the steep cliff faces are also pretty spectacular.
