Why rush to test them now ?  Keep them isolated  & wait until they get sick or

tested in 12/14 days then you will know !!!

If any of these show a positive test it gives direction for  tracing of any contacts they may have come in contact with. The earlier the better since the contacts will be less and the task of tracing is easier, more accurate and inclusive.

  2. The claim of animal cruelty in this situation, I think, is related to the care (housing, feeding and securing) of these animals. I haven't seen any claim or description of injury or cruelty in the acts of coconut harvesting.
Could the coconut growers and processors review the care of the monkeys to make the process of coconut reaping humane, ethical and pleasant?

  3. I can't imagine taking a cruise on a ship with all the stories of desperation and unknown disembarkation allowance in instances of viral outbreak. There have been anecdotes of doctors and health workers wondering how infectious disease can possibly be contained in such chaotic environments. The leisure cruise industry has to show a plan and strategy if they want thinking customers to consider this mode of travel in the future. I presume military hospital ships would be a good model to examine and to consult with specialist maritime epidemiologists, specialist health professionals and engineers on safe workable ship layouts and assignments that would enable effective management in such situations.

Both UK PM Boris Johnson and New York governor Cuomo have spoken enthusiastically about the development of a blood ANTIBODY test for this virus. Having the antibodies by basic definition means that you have some immunity to the current form of this virus. How strong such immunity is and how long it lasts is as yet not known. When we get a vaccine it might be either permanent or need annual revisions. Also of course the concept of herd immunity is based on a huge percentage of the public being infected. Herd immunity, flattening the curve, and developing a vaccine can happen concurrently.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-8147809/Cuomo-wants-begin-antibody-blood-tests-coronavirus-New-York.html

Governor Cuomo wants to begin antibody blood tests for coronavirus in New York to determine which health care and private sector staff are now immune and can return to work

New York is 'pursuing' testing residents' blood for coronavirus antibodies, which indicate that they have had, recovered from and become immune to the virus, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday.

Researchers at Mt Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine announced Monday that they had developed the first so-called serologic test for COVID-19 in the US, and plan to roll it out in the next few days in its clinics.

Serologic testing will likely confirm what experts suspect: that thousands more people than have tested positive for coronavirus have actually contracted and cleared the infection.

A subsequent antibody titre does not imply immunity. This is an immunological response to the virus but not necessarily an antibody response that is associated with destruction and protection against the virus. That would need to be proved by an extensive survey and analysis and also would need to be replicated. There is also a possibility that an antibody level provides some but not total protection against the virus. It is a most important area of research and well worth the time it will need to investigate.

The received wisdom is that health services were overwhelmed in Italy, rather than a more deadly strain or demographics, hence the UK strategy of flattening the curve and enhancing NHS resources. As a leading physician, you'd think he'd know that. What it does illustrate, though, is that this virus, of whatever strain, can be far more deadly than generally perceived, if proper medical care is not available.

    Agree.

The University of Valencia in a statement said: "The conclusion that has been reached after the analysis carried out is that, until now, no mutation has been found associated with greater virulence, lethality, or some interesting property from a clinical point of view."

Italian researchers came to the same conclusion.  (This was the opinion on the 18th March and published in the popular press of 'UK Express' of that date)

  6. The N95 mask/filter material does exclude the virus respiratory droplets as others have mentioned. It is used in configurations in medical and clinical research settings. The unknown is its effectiveness in the outside world and this is a very real question. The 95 mask is one of the good places to start looking for effective ways to protect the broader society and a tool for research in effective barriers against the infection transmission. It probably won't be the magic protective bullet. (?)

  7. Wondering what the "guarantee letter" from the bank must include?

3 of 5 years the letter has been rejected by local immigration office. Have been in touch with bank CS department but they can't define the requirements of the contents for annual extension of visa. They just issue the letter!

The Amalekites may call you Philistine!

no Amalekites left. they are extinct. reason: drinking water that has not been properly decontaminated.

    argumentum ad ignorantiam!

apologists have proved that the head distiller went on leave and the apprentice didn't discard the "heads"

  9. What worries me the most is what about the stray dogs that come on my farm and kill my piglets or calf. The only way to stop it here is to poison them with food near the pen. I have yet to do this but I'm sure I will be forced to in the future because they already killed my first lot of piglets I bought. They only lasted 2 nights. I can't seek reimbursement from the apparent owners because they don't claim ownership. However, should I kill one of the dogs I am certain they will change their tune if they see a chance to demand compensation from me.

Acknowledging your right to protect your property, I wonder how effective bait would be in protecting piglets in this situation? It's likely that the dogs would take the bait and kill the piglets. Maybe the solution is to ensure the safety of the piglets with an effective protective barrier/environment, then the issue of baiting wouldn't be relevant?

  10. correcting headline: The Euro - could it's days be numbered?

It's is the contracted form of 'it has' or 'it is'. Its is the possessive form of it, meaning 'of it'. This is possibly why the difference between it's and its causes so many problems. Its, without an apostrophe, is a possessive form, where an apostrophe is usually required. It is similar to words like his and hers, neither of which needs an apostrophe.

    So the headline is correct

  11. I always believed that the gold price was set by the world market. Interesting it has gone down 3.2% in Thailand, and 4.5% everywhere else. Would this not be called "price-fixing"? Why would you buy gold here, if it is above the market in the rest of the world?

gold in Thailand is sold at exactly the world market price (see below) with the advantage that bid/ask (buy/sell) difference is lower in Thailand.

some people arrive at wrong assumptions, respectively calculations because they compare apples with oranges by not taking the different currencies in which gold is quoted into consideration.

    example:

-the selling price of 1 Baht weight is today THB 18,200

-world market price of gold per Troy ounce USD 1,099.50

-one Troy ounce of gold is the equivalent of ~2.0438 Baht weights

-the mid exchange rate US-Dollar/Thai Baht today is 34.89

    18200 : 34.89 = $521.64 x 2.0438 = $1,066.12 x 1.0363 (Thai gold purity only 96.5%) = $1,105 minus goldshop margin = $1,099.50 = difference zero!

this lesson is free of charge although i have wasted at least 5 minutes of my precious time.

Not wasted. I definitely learnt. Thank you!

  12. Hard to be objective with this.

But what is the outcome if this changes....another Bangladesh? Massively overpopulated very poor country like their next door neighbours?

Don't get me wrong I dearly love the Burmese people (well the ones I have been fortunate enough to meet).

The answer IMHO is economic and political reform which, over time, will reduce the birth rate and so the mortality rate.

Simply trying to keep kids alive by throwing money at the problem has never worked.

I'm old enough to remember the starving Biafrans of the 1960's and all the help was provided there.

Is Africa a better place since then? Has starvation been eliminated?

Sorry to sound so hard hearted.

Why is it hard to be objective on this issue?

The crude birthrate in Myanmar has been dropping for years. She is a country larger than Thailand, about a third as much land area again, with 54,000,000 people compared to Thailand's 67,000,000, and her crude birthrate is slightly above the threshold for maintaining her population. Economic and educational reform will probably turn the childhood mortality and illnesses around as it has done in developed countries and is doing in other developing countries.

Your comparison to Biafra doesn't make sense. Myanmar is not considered a starving country, she is poor; there is no need to eliminate Myanmar's starvation..

  13. How does one classify drunk? What's permissible? I know of many people who are better riders / drivers even after a few drinks than the majority of Thai motorists. And would any of you trust the calibration of the so called breath analysers?

This a fallacy. Alcohol removes your natural inhibitions or in other words fear (which is usually why it's used to meet girls etc) This in turn makes you ride/drive faster than you normally would as you are less scared to do so. Yes you may find yourself doing things on your bike that you would not normally attempt, and when you pull it off you amaze yourself with your new found riding/driving skills. However your new higher speed is not under your complete control anymore and your reaction times are now impeded, so when someone isn't in your 'zone' and they pull out in front of you or something....BANG!

As far as I know the standard fine was 20,000B, this mandatory prison time is a new thing though. I'd say it's not true, it's usually either or. Links or it isn't true.

    You misunderstand.

Most of us know that Thai drivers are at best suspect when it comes to knowing, understanding and adhering to the normal rules and regulations for driving safely (not running red lights, not riding against the flow of traffic, not overtaking around blind corners etc). What I mean is that I know of a lot of people who are not even slightly or remotely "drunk" after having a few beers and they will still be better drivers / riders than the majority of Thai motorists.

For that matter, I would even go as far as to say that a slightly drunk farang motorist would still have better reactions than most Thai female motorists smile.png

  14. Thank you for the information. The supply is good!

Of course changing the pump cable myself invalidates the warranty but think that safety is a higher consideration. Contacted the pump manufacturer and they refused to give details stating that Thai Standards don't allow for a three lead cable of 1.5 sq mm wires, two core cable is OK they refused information on the process of replacing the cable stating it was against their policy to give out manual's procedures. The access is hidden under the pump itself. I finally contacted the retailer (bigpump)for instructions and K. Piya was most supportive and made contact with the Thai distributor.

The engineers from the distributor factory arrived within 24 hours and replaced the cable onsite, free of charge, with a Thai molded cable and standard 3 pin plug with 3 x 1.5 sq mm leads all round, EU colour coding. The warranty remains valid.

  15. External (exposed but OK) location of pump. Appliance cable is 1.5 sq mm 2 core and a separate earth lead ( damn! separate issue.)

What power supply cable size should I run to the power outlet for the pump?

Suggested rating of combination CB and safety cut (combined)?

Approx 12 metres from supply board. Will be dedicated circuit.

  16. Are they playing God? It's a kind of Frankenstein story...ethical incorrect...should be banned

Why is it unethical? What is the ethical argument?

The man's body is dysfunctional and deteriorating; he is likely to die soon. His mind is functional but he will die without a functional body. The body used would be of a brain-dead person and offers the man a chance at life. God isn't in the equation. There is no increase in harm simply a high risk.
