1. Are they playing God? It's a kind of Frankenstein story...ethical incorrect...should be banned

Why is it unethical? What is the ethical argument?

The man's body is dysfunctional and deteriorating; he is likely to die soon. His mind is functional but he will die without a functional body. The body used would be of a brain-dead person and offers the man a chance at life. God isn't in the equation. There is no increase in harm simply a high risk.

  2. According to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali woman Moslem apostate, now atheist, in the shadow of a fatwa and now living in the US, there are far more FGM's performed on Christian girls in Ethiopia than on Moslem women in African countries. She also calls for the world to leave the criticism of Moslem FGM and allow their women to manage the issue as they seem to be doing.

If Christians also do it or do it more than Muslims doesn't make it any better. That isn't a argument at all.

Yes I agree it is not a defense argument. The original implication was that the issue is a Moslem issue and many follow ons were related to this.

GM isn't defensible but it is widespread and potentially harms many. Hirsi Ali's research suggests that FGM is diminishing and being reviewed by many women in the communities that practice this procedure. Her argument is that it is likely to be a better outcome than imposed prohibition of the procedure, which would be unable to be monitored.

  4. Will enter Myanmar at Mandalay by flight and head down to Myawaddy.

3 pax: 2 UK and 1 Australian. The 2 UK people will want to enter at Myawaddy with a Thai Visa exemption issued at the Mae Sot Immigration point. The Aus has an O visa with multiple entry.

The question arose that UK passport holders can only depart Myanmar through an International airport. Is there any rule stating this? Is this true?

    Thank you for any advice.

  5. Hello Jingthing,

This is a good thread and an interesting stimulus. You mentioned that you don't wish to buy a new selection of implements but I think it may help to define what you may need for specific dishes.

What I make that is not an everyday dish:

Chicken liver pate with Thai truffles in season.

Pork and chicken terrine en croute

    Devilled kidneys

    Various daals

    Hummus

    Refried beans and salsas.

    Apple and apricot pie.

I have purchased all ingredients at common supermarkets.

    Implements:

    Food processor. 3500 Baht

    Sieve. 60 Baht

    benchtop fan oven. 1500 Baht

  6. One thing is that US does not have single phase 240 volts as here (even for 240 volt uses)- it is split phase two 120 lines - so be sure this is an export motor designed for single phase 230 volt two wire (plus ground maybe) power.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split-phase_electric_power

    Thank you again.

The motor is marked as Single Phase, I think? (PH 1)

I have checked the input wiring and it is earthed (White Black and Green). Both white and black are switched in the pressure cut-off controllers.

Happy to check further if you lead me.

  7. How do you get supply side 30psi? You never pump from public water supply and most would not be at that pressure.

    Thaks Lopburi,

I wasn't clear and I have read your follow on statement/message. Apologies.

I have an Hitachi supply pressure pump on the entry of the supply serving the whole house. The booster pump is connected to an outlet on this line. So the supply to the booster is 30 - 40 PSI (depending on which meter i read :) )

  8. Are you sure the motor is rated for 50 or 60 hz? My guess is the issue is related to running at 50 hz - which it would not have been designed for use in the states.

    Thanks Steve,

The freq is stamped on the motor housing: "HZ 60/50".

    "V: 100-120/200-240"

    PH 1

Is there anything else I need to see?

  9. I have purchased a booster pump system from the US. It delivers adjustable pressure up to 100 PSI with a supply pressure of 30 PSI and somewhat adjustable.

The motor is a Marathon (1/2 HP) and is wired for 220VAC 50/60 Hz. The motor cuts out within minutes and feels very hot. Water flows freely through the system when switched off and for the interval that it runs it achieves the pressure output.

There is an adjustable inlet pressure switch to prevent dry running and a non adjustable max pressure cut-off on the outlet, to prevent membrane damage. The Fluidotech pump outlet pressure is adjustable.

I don’t know how to approach this to get it going and wonder if someone could give me some advice?

    Thank you.

  10. This really is a bit off, when taken seriously. It's awful barbaric practice, and nothing to be laughed at. sad.png

In all honesty, is there a difference between skinning dogs for their hides, or skinning cows or pigs or snakes or even crocodiles for their respective hides ?

Why is one barbaric and not the other ?

Because they skin the dogs alive. That's barbarism.

You're right about the source of the hides and it doesn't really make sense to accept one as acceptable but not the other. At least they humanely kill the cows, pigs and crocodiles and they kill the snakes before skinning them I bet.

  11. This is a very interesting thread.

On my 1st renewal of retirement visa the officer advised me that the bank letter must be issued the same day as the renewal application, this wasn't the case on my original application to that. I explained that I wasn't aware of this and understood that it could be issued within a fortnight to be valid. They were very clear in their instruction and agreed to accept it this time but for future renewals it must be dated on the application day.

After completing the application and obtaining the visa I explained that the Bank didn't have the facility to provide it on the same day as a request to the bank for such a letter required a lead time of 1 week. Their response was simply to change banks! I never felt that it was a contest of wills or face saving but had to accept the final ultimatum. In fact the rules state that it can be obtained within a specific period but as others have mentioned different offices/officers can call the tune.

The obvious thought subsequently was to get a forward dated letter but the problem there is that the statement issued can't be forward dated as it is a computer generated report and a statement of 3 months can only be issued from the main bank center. I feel stymied and would appreciate any advice on this.

  12. Thank you all for your responses and opinions.

Following up with the seller he asked the distributor for a copy of the manual and it states that in fact there is a ground wire separate and tucked in the back of the chassis and a sketch of this which is attached as an image to this reply.

    4. Earthing wiring.

Ground this refrigerator to prevent electric shock and noise interference. Always ground this refrigerator when using it in places with high humidity or moisture. (Please consult with retailers.)

I will replace the 2 core/2 pin cable/plug with a 3 core/3 pin cable/plug and connect the earth wire of this to the chassis of the fridge.

The power usage of the fridge is stated as 150W with an inverter, Will it be OK to use 3 core 0.75 mm2 twisted wire flex? (The power sockets are all earthed back to the power board and circuits protected by RCD's.)

Once again thank you for the information and workarounds.

  13. I'm researching a replacement refrigerator and am investigating a renowned international brand model. I needed additional information from the retailer and specifically asked about the plug attached to the fridge. I was surprised that the response advised me that it came with a "standard 2 pin plug" . I suspected it's an Euro style plug with the earth connector running alon the sides of the plug so I asked for confirmation suggesting that a non-earthed fridge is potentially very dangerous. Apparently not.

    Here's the reply:

As refer to our earlier discussion that concern with xxxxxxx round plug -2pin.

I’ve got a confirmation from xxxxxxx that their refrigerator comes with 2pin plug.

Also, I’ve check with some other refrigerator brand; they also have a similar kind of plug.

Yet, this 2 pin plug have met the requirement of TISI (Thai Industrial Standards Institute).

This is because, the earthing wire is installed in the refrigerator. Therefore, refrigerator

legs is acts like a ground medium where it deliver an excess electric shock to the ground.

As an optional, this ground wire could be extended out and plug in into the earthing socket (if available)

I think that the explanation is wrong and would like an opinion on the rationale

  14. We have them for our pump and for an ouside power point for a fan and computer. Get one that the lid opens vertically and shades the box. My smart electrician also wrapped the faceplate of the sockets in tight plastic so the prongs of the plug pierce it to go into the socket. Very smart as the holes seem to close up slightly when the plug is removed and will surely help in keeping dust an maybe insects out a bit.

Clever idea. Now to find some appropriate plastic material. Thanks for your input harrry

  15. IP65 is probably over the top unless it's actually out in the rain or likely to get hosed, one of the simple weatherproof boxes with a door will do the trick, cut a slot in the bottom to let the appliance lead out and you're good to go.

Our outdoor points are mostly under a 1.2m overhanging eave, conventional outlets, never get damp.

Obviously all outdoor outlets must be protected by earth leakage devices (RCD or RCBO).

    Thank you all.

It occasionally gets direct rain, maybe twice a year from the west. It is probably about 1 m inside the eave but down to a manageable height of about 1.5 m; so still exposed on those days where the rain is from the west. RCD on the circuit so feel happy to go with this.

  16. Is it safe or stupid to place power points in water -proof cabinets (IP65) mounted to the external wall of a house? This I'm thinking would be taken off as a spur from a line with adequate cable sizing. The run is approx 4 meters and the expected use would be for small powered item. (Fish tank filter pump). Behind the line is a safety cut-off on that circuit specifically and it would be grounded back to the service unit.

Local electrician said unsafe but I don't understand why?

  17. While on this topic, has anyone tried the magnetic/electronic products that claim to help with the issue? For example, this one even claims to help cleaning the existing build-up:

    http://www.maxxi.co.th/index.php/water/decalcifier/maxxi-decalcifier

Best of all, it can save hours of cleaning time! this innovative solution will begin to save you money from day one, descaling your existing system and giving longer life to domestic appliances, not forgetting the savings on fuel bills, soaps, shampoo's and detergents.

I purchased one of these type devices from the UK about 6 years ago for the same problem.

The effect is not observable. I found that initially I was wiping down surfaces immediately and therefore didn't see a build up. I concluded that it worked :). Subsequently went back to a normal style of maintenance and the issue really hadn't changed. No bona-fide group has demonstrated this has worked and there are university engineering departments who have studied it. I have since de-commissioned the unit.

My next attempt was to use ion exchange resins. This reduced calcium and magnesium but the salt use was very high and the recharging became a bothersome chore. Now I have installed a whole of house RO system. No pre-treatment of water supply (450 mg/l calcium) and the filters are still working well after 12 months. occasionally I will run the deionised water through the system to soak and this seems to preserve the RO filters from precipitated calcium damage. I ozonize the tank every 2 days and the water is safe to drink, no bacterial contamination, clean as anything with no taste, easy sudsing and no scale build up anywhere. The pipes have descaled since using this system.
