  1. Not sure when the last you read any updates... but this is what I've found:

nothing newer than that.. no news on the results of any cases against the killers..

    :o

many thanks s.j. for the update. there seems nothing on the internet since 2003 which is odd.

  2. First and foremost of all folks, The current Pantip Plaza is run by the mob itself.  They sell mostly illegal tit for tats there.  Now they want to build Pantip Plaza 2 and 3 to sell more illegal stuff.  Whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.  They have yet to shut down the first place yet.  This money goes up the ladder here folks, and you can see flat top with his smiling face down yonder.

    Sigh

    Daveyo

This is not the Panthip Plaza I would recognise. I have bought two computers and other equipment there over the years, all of which came with genuine guarantees. Would you include the book shops and IT mall on the top floor there for instance in your description?

Cooincidentally I live just over a stones throw from Bamlampoo Ngam Wong Wan. I welcome the upgrade to this sorry department store altho from all accounts the current occupants renting space do not welcome the proposed increase in rentals. I would be surprised if the proposed Tops Supermarket would survive at this location.

Ngam Wong Wan already has an IT store at the Mall as well as supermarkets at Tesco Lotus and the Mall.

  3. GR,

Thanks for your kind words. Just wanted to share this, even for me, traumatic expiriance. Have seen and dealed with it before, but never with youngsters.

Worked on ferrys between scandinavia and mid-europe in early 90's.. Many truckers that gave up after a full night of booze and pulver. "Jump started" many of them at that time but noyhing compares to today's unfortunate accident which could be easily avoided.

Take care of your loved ones and chack your outlets'....

Sorry to bother with this sad story (been out and powered it up by Chang - sadly)

    - This morning a terrible accident happened at my area of quarters (PM me if name wanted)/ Young boy 8-10 year old Philipino/Farang, newly moved in since two days, have a terrible accident... At pool area there is a bar nicely lowered in to the pool but unfortunately never attended as condo still under construction and therefore no profit yet (my guess).

This morning two young boys were playing around (jumping, diving, etc.) as boys do in pool areas (about 9 AM) for an hour or so.. Heard them all time as having a good time and did not bother until I heard the terrible noise of electric current running wild. Did not "understand" what it was I was hearing but somehow understood that I needed to get my big nose out at the balcony and check it out...

At that time, all maids and security guards were standing on the side of this pool-side bar and just screaming and (security) blowing their whistles. Knew immediately that something have gone awfully wrong. Asked instinctally if someone was in a fight or similar? Wife said, no, this one I don't understand what about as all were shouting and screaming, 10 sec later we saw one guard carry one boy out of the pool bar seemingly lifeless.. Guards brought him out and laid him on a bench, like 20 mtrs away, and there it stopped!!!

I am fully trained in basic ABC, which in my counry mean: Breathe, bleeding, chock..I could not just stand watching this disaster happening without even trying, seeing the guard and like 30+ extra people doing nothing except holding the poor boys hand?? Anyway, started heart massage as soon as I got there, everything chaotic as parents of the boy arrived, asked someone to blow air into the mouth every 30 seconds - NO ONE wanted???? Anyway, sadly later  I learned that the boy passed away (may someone watch over his soul) and what I relly wanted to say is:

A non-grounded pool bar where ever you are - NO NO, B*****T

Teach all puplic servants tha basic medical aid is a must education - London in mind. Thre is so much buildings going on but who is keeping track of it. At least I know Europe keeps some kind of standard or norm to keep it safe?

Sad day and feel really shitty about it as I have a newborn energetic son which will use whatever we grownups make him climb...

Thoughts and prayers to this mornings boys family,,, Truly sad.

    edh

I, too, am sad to hear that this ended so tragically, EDH. But please let your heart be healed by the knowledge that you did everything within your power to try to save the life of the young boy. What a wonderful story it would have been if the boy had still had enough life in him when you arrived for your efforts to have been successful. Unfortunately, he was beyond such help when you arrived.

Your regrets about the lack of safety precautions are very valid. It is something often seen in many countries which lack the sophistication to adequately regulate dangerous construction acitivities. Hopefully, the death of this young boy will contribute toward an effort to improve those regulations.

Meanwhile, while I have no relationship to the lost child, I thank you, as a human being, for your efforts to save him. Sleep well, knowing that you are a good man.

A similar incident occurred in an hotel swimming pool in pattaya a couple of years ago resulting in the tragic death of a farang boy. The cause was faulty wiring in the swimming pool. My strong advice is not to swim in swimming pools in thailand, which have underwater light fittings irrespective of whether the power is switched on or off.

Such lighting is generally installed without the use of power breakers or good earth connections which former would normally have tripped in the event of a problem.

You may remember the incident of the school machine selling cans of soft drinks which was electrically defective. I merely had a piece of paper stuck on the machine stating the machine was dangerous. Of course the paper fell off and tragically a young child died. No one thought to isolate the machine. TIT.

  4. Hi,

I am about to become a father (two boys!) in a month's time or so, and plan to video every moment of it (well, almost!), from birth onwards.  Last time I bought a video camera was back in 1990, and I have noticed things have changed a bit since then. :D

What I am after, is basically a camera that is relatively compact, and I want to be able to edit the video on my PC.  While I am relatively technically capable, and a keen amateur photographer, I will be the first one to admit that on the video front, I am way behind.  :o

Since this will be an investment that I will be using a lot, and for quite some time into the future, I don't mind paying for a good, high quality brand/make.

Suggestions, anyone?  Brands, required or cool features, prices & dealers(Bangkok), etc.  All info would be greatly appreciated.  :D

Buy yourself a copy of Pinnacle Studio 9 which will capture your dvd as AVI using a firewire lead between camera and computer. If you don't have a firewire port on the computer, these cards are readily available and cheap.

You can then edit what you have captured, add titles and transitions and then encode to MPEG 1 if you wish to create a vcd using Nero, which latter is considered the best OR encode it as MPEG 2 if you wish to create a dvd using Pinnacle and then burn to dvd assuming you have a dvd writer. You would need to obtain TMPG DVD Author to create a suitable menu for a dvd.

A great site for what you are endeavouring to do is "www.videohelp.com".

When connecting the firewire lead between camera and computer, switch off the camera, connect the firewire lead to the computer first and then connect the camera to the lead. Then switch on the camera. Then start Pinnacle Studio 9. The latter may have a few bugs but if you keep things simple, you should get the results you want.

So the software you need is:

    Pinnacle Studio 9

    Nero

    TMPG DVD Author

TMPGENC (free) is a useful addition to the above.

    Mainconcept Encoder is too.

    Best of luck

  6. My g/f and I would like a short break on Koh Samet,

What is the best way to get to the ferry from Pattaya, Is there a bus service and at what times or do we need to use a taxi

Also if somebody knows of reasonably price hotels on either side of the island please let me know

    Thanks in advance

There are regular air con buses along Sukhumvit Road (I catch mine at the top of Theprasit Road because I live in Jomtien) direct to the Rayong bus terminal. From there take a mini van or baht bus to the koh samet ferry terminal.

  7. Me and my wife is going back to thailand again this summer , and this year i would like to stay a little closer to her family.

They live in Nontaburi , Ngamwonwarn soi 18

Would like to find a ok place to live, and been looking a little at Regent Ngamwonwarn located at Ngamwongwan Soi 9.

Anyone lived here or anyone know about a good place to live for 5 weeks in Nontaburi area ??

    Will go August this year

Try the Golden Dragon Hotel which is opposite the Mall, Ngam Wong Wan and closer to soi 18. The Regent is not very convenient if you are walking to the Mall altho there are any number of buses that travel down ngam wong wan.

  8. I have checked the prices of plasma flat screen TVs in Bangkok and find they are quite expensive.  The 42" versions are from 160,000 baht to 250,000.  In the US at Costco or other bulk stores they are as low as US$2,000 (or ~80,000 baht).  Could somebody advise on what duty implications are bringing in a TV from Singapore or the US?

BTW, the TV's will work on 120v or 240v as well as selectable from PAL and NTSC.

Or any other gems of wisdom to do with getting a good flat screen plasma TV in Thailand?

You will find that both the singapore and usa tv will be incompatible with the tv system in thailand. both may use or be capable of using the PAL system but there are a number of variations of that system, particularly as regarding the audio signal. Check out "TV systems" in your search engine.

  9. On Monday I checked out the THAI internet site to ascertain the price of a return ticket to London at the end of March. Price quoted and said to be the lowest fare was Baht 42,600.

I checked the price of same flights with a travel agent in Silom Road and the price quoted was Baht 30600 - saving Baht 12,000 per ticket.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to decide where I booked my tickets.

My question is just why is THAI not making the cheaper flight available for those who book on the internet?

  10. Just seen on BBC news that 1000 Indonesians in one devastated town in Aceh, Indonesia are starving because no food aid has arrived. The village has apparently one bag of rice of 1000 people including children.

If the BBC can get to this village, how is it that the Indonesian Army and food aid cannot?

Or is this pay back time by the Indonesian Government?

  11. well that idiot guy did not know my address ..But i just got his adress from my contact..Well i think he's going to have a sleepless night..hahaahha...

Surely KTB has a manager in its head office in charge of the foreign exchange booths in thailand. How is it that the cctv camera was not working for six months? Why didnt that manager know? If the manager in the KTB head office doesn't supervise foreign exchange booths then he is not doing his job and should get the AXE as should the manager at Bangkok Airport and the cheating clerk himself.

At least we all now know where not to change our hard earned cash!

Congratulations in persevering with your valid complaint.

  12. Many thanks to thaivisa and onethailand sites for assistance in finding two friends who were residing in destroyed impiana hotel, phuket. they are alive but injured and were transported to bangkok for medical attention. they were asleep at the time and have lost everything. Thanks to these two websites run by clever and socially aware people and thanks to bangkok phuket hospital in promptly putting up a list with a search facility.
