  1. As a Brit, can I do the whole process in Chiang Mai? I live in Chiang Rai, so this would be more preferable than a trip to BKK. There's a British consulate there, so that part's no trouble, but what about the MFA part?

The MFA has an office at CNX City Hall for this purpose. You will still need the translation to Thai which also can be done in CNX.

    Brilliant, thanks for the info.

  2. I was in a very similar situation a couple of years ago. I was on an extended non-b visa, but I left the job and forgot to give the WP back to the school. I had 6 months left on the extension when I left the job, and just went and did my 90 day extensions as normal without any issues whatsoever. When it came to go and get a new visa, there wasn't any issue at the border.

Now, I'm not saying that this was the right thing to do. Technically, I was in the country illegally for those 6 months, but in my experience, the Work Permit people and the Immigration people do not share information, and you shouldn't have a problem with your visa. As long as the stamps in your passport are legit, any border personnel shouldn't check any further.

EDIT: I just saw your last post, and it seems everything was fine. It really does boggle my mind that Thailand doesn't have some sort of integrated network to check these facts between departments, but they really don't.

  3. Not sure if it's satellite at it's base, as I don't think we get satellite coverage around here, but it's relayed by microwave dish from about 18 km to me, I'm quite sketchy on the tek involved, only have to run 5 PC's on it so should be ok hopefully... I'm not anticipating all the PC's being used for online gaming most of the time, we're talking real hillbilly's out here, they'd be amazed just playing COD 4 modern warfare SP I should think...

Ah ok, I mean for just Facebooking and the like it should be fine, but the kids will already be able to do that on their phones. I would look at perhaps some games that would be able to be played over the LAN - then all the friends could come in together and play together. I think gaming will probably be your biggest draw - any internet cafe I've ever seen here in Thailand has always been full of kids playing games.

  4. I realise that thanks Daffy, my saving grace is that to get internet here you need a 5 metre ariel with a line of sight dish on top capable of picking up from 18 Km away, rather expensive for the poor rice farmers around where I live unless they piggyback from mine which I'm, obviously not gonna let happen...

As I've said before beig, no BIB to pay where I live... smile.png

So you're on satellite internet? The latency will be awful for online gaming, and I really doubt the bandwidth will be sufficient for 10+ computers all connected and downloading at once.

  5. In my experience, the fees from Paypal are negligible if you select the 'I am sending money to friends and family' option, and don't use a credit card. However, their exchange rates are pretty awful. For smaller amounts (around $1000 or so) I still use them because it's very quick and easy and I can withdraw the money directly to my bank account on either end.

However, if you want to send large amounts of money, you'd be better off with a bank wire I'd think.

  6. Does anybody know where I can find e-cigs in Chiang Rai? There's a guy in the Tesco Lotus in Chiang Khong who does sell them, but I don't like the liquids that he has. I'd be willing to drive into town to get some, but I'm not sure where to look.

  7. If you block it she will find a way to access it. Any smartphone, any internet cafe, any of her friends. She'll also resent you for doing it. Sit down and talk with her, rationally and calmly, and present your issue to her. See if you can come to a compromise.

  8. TOT is terrible for gaming. If it's available where you are, try 3BB - I had a much better experience with them. You could also try a service like www.wtfast.com which I did use for a while. It has a month long free trial so you can see if it improves your ping.

  9. I've been on a non-imm B visa for the last few years as I've been teaching. However, I've recently stopped teaching and gone home for a quick visit. I'll be returning to Thailand next week, without arranging a visa. So I'll fly into Suvarhnabhumi and get a 30 day exempt entry as I'm British. Does this mean I'll then be able to get one more 30 day exemption if I go to Mae Sai (currently living in Chiang Rai), or will I have to go to the consulate in Vientiane once my original 30 days are up?

You can get one more 30 day exemption if you go to Mae Sai.

Great, thanks for the quick reply. Should give me enough time to arrange a proper visa.
