I have got to say in 14 years of being in the los my first and only rip off experince was my very first time in the kingdom but it was my own mistake getting in a taxi with no meter from Wat po & just told him where I was staying..so during the journey he how many times I'd been to Thailand..I said "it's my first time" lol..so just near my hotel he diverts to a one way street and says "you get out here" and btw farang that's 2500 baht!!! When I was told from the hotel no more than 150 baht from Wat po to victory monument, so a fraca ensued which I gave him 200bt he then proceeded to grab something from under his seat but by that happened I had already elbowed him in the face and promptly scarpered to the hotel, when I told them the story they wasnt in the least surprised and just told me "this is Thailand" since I have learnt the language vocally and written & savvied up and since I've had not want piece of barney rubble with Thais in work related or travel..on aggro I've had is with pissed up tommy tourist, there more of a hazard after a few bevs!

Just a reverse of the topic....when I first took my wife to Oz, she couldn't speak english very well, but understood it very well.

Many times while out she overheard many conversations that the people around her obviously thought that she couldn't understand her.

I found out some very amusing home truths about some people......

....back on topic, I am with Blether. I cannot speak Thai yet but would really love to be in the position of being thought that I cannot understand...then drop the bombshell.

As I live in the sticks and am constantly surrounded by Thai conversation, one would think that some of it would seep thru my thick skull....but alas am struggling. All the locals in the village (plus family) want me to be able to speak Thai.....so I haven't encountered the negative side out here.

If you live in issan you won't learn no Thai at all, locals will only speak Lao or Khmer dialects so unless you live in the central plains you will be wasting your time because people from issan cannot speak good Thai or even pronounce it properly, try to imagine a Welshman talking like me a true cockney from London and you'll get the idea

Jake do you really think thier are so many like that ? I mean out of the millions and millions and millions that come every year how many do you see potless and selling drugs ? Is it really a big problem or is it more hype than reality ? I am not being retorical either I am really asking, because I don't hang out in the kind of seedy places one might find them so I don't really know. I have never personally seen a potless drug selling westerner so I haven't been able to ask him if he had any money from his house when he got here so I woulnd't know about that either.

What I do see is a lot of poorish people that seem to be here with visa's that are living how one would expect, I would also say that while it seemed odd to me the thread about going back home seemed to indicate that a lot of regular retired people have changed their lives enough so they can't really afford to move back home anylonger as well. My guess is the longer people are here and the less they care about going back home the more inclined they are to spend the extra money they might need to live back home because they have decided not to in the first place. A little off topic but my point is I don't think it's a problem just for the 6 month living high on the hog end up selling drugs types , I think it's a situation more people than we might think find themselves in but are smart enough not to sell drugs and don't broadcast it because it might be a little embarassing for them.

I think the number of stories about people blowing all their money in Thailand is more myth than reality personally , it makes for a good story but I doubt it's a very large percentage of people. The people I talk to in the Airports that lost their wives or houses don't seem especially pleased about it, but they are not exactly bankrupt either and seem to be moving on in life just fine.

Firstly the places I frequent karon or kata are not the LBFM beer bars because secondly if a Thai overhears you talking about so and so ain't got not money so he's selling sniff blah blah they'll grass you up & 10 more farangs like us, but being here nearly 13 years now you tend to accumulate friends and friends hence which is why I personally know 2 ex friends who ran skint and decided going back to England in mid January was not a comfortable option so hence got involved with some Thai girls to distribute some ya ba but then got grassed up by some Thai guy out of plain ole jealousy, so the moral of the story is if your money runs out in the LOS you'll quickly find no one is smiling at you quite like they did before

IMHO it's amazed me how many guys who've come out to the Los with a bag of money from the sale of their house or grannies left them something in a will, then promptly spunked it all on LBFM and ringing that bleeding bell to death, then wake up one after another drunk fest night on the tiles and realise after 6 months their potless! So What do they do? They turn to drug running dropping it and picking it up just for a bit of money and a piss damp bed because they can't face the fact of leaving the Los and going back to their miserable lives from wherever they've came from, just look at that farang tramp in pattaya I think he's German or Dutch and he won't go home even though he's skint he would rather tough it out on the beach, but IMO Thailand does stranges things to people that just don't Wana ever go home! Sorry dudes rant over BTW lol

It happens, I think most are just curious about the dynamics, what, how, where etc… people are naturally a little nosey.

I sometimes see the ‘girl-half’ of other mixed couples checking us out, again probably for the same reasons of natural curiosity in others, sometimes perhaps for comparison…

When I feel another guy staring in what I interpret as a lecherous manner, or what could easily be interpreted as rude or makes us feel uncomfortable I simply stare back, sometimes that’s enough.

Sometimes the offending ‘starer ‘is so lost in their own ignorance they are there, staring, oblivious of anyone else to such a degree they are up to their 2^nd knuckle in a bogey hunt !!....

I caught a guy out the other day – having a great old stare. Each time I looked at him he looked away, then when I’d turned and turned back, there he was staring again, and looked away. Something must have compelled him so much that he couldn’t help himself…

It’s not ok in Thailand to stare. No amount of cultural difference can explain simple impoliteness. Those who stare to the point of making someone feel uncomfortable are simply ignorant.

In India the staring was taken to another level, they group together and stare in crowds… … and people (mostly young Indian girls) were actually coming up to my wife to have their photo taken with her… very strange!!

Personally IMO I wouldn't have come here 13yrs ago just to find a woman who is from the same background and culture as me, I adore Thailand and its people as a whole so going back to farang woman is not an option IMO I'd be interested in doing, I mean why come to Thailand and end up with someone who is similar to your self?? I actually enjoy speaking Thai and embracing the culture and it is possible to laugh and be sarcastic with yr Thai gf if you approach it right and explain what a SOH and sarcasm means lol, unless yr already married to a farang when you come here well why link up with some one who is the same as you??? Horses for courses I guess

I'm with all that Impulse .... Pretty much what I guess I already knew .... Just depends where you come from and where you go to. I am from an inexpensive place unlike the guy from London so I suppose we see it differently for the same thing ! ..... But yeah it's mostly just different not better or worse for me to.

IMO its just slang when they say "chocolate man" like some of the derogatory nicknames they even say about each other (Thais) it would be interesting to play a game of charades with a Thai because they literally say What they see! But getting back on topic the "chocolate man" thing is just a derogatory lazy racist terminology but Thais are not the the most subtle in their words, and just don't tell a Thai a secret if you want it to remain a secret!

Asked my 43 year old wife the question. she called them Negro and never heard the term Chocolate used for Balck people.

Maybe that can be the new code for "my wife wasn't a bar girl" rather than exotic Chinese-Thai. 8-)

Because the word "farang" comes from the Thai translation for French hence "European" but as we know not all of us hail from Europe but Thais generalise us all as "farangs" even if your from australia or England or Nigeria, we're all just "farangs" to Thais and it has nothing to do with the colour of our skin

I don't know if this thread has been done here before but I want to ask IMHO who makes a better Thai wife, an Isarn girl, a northwest girl, a central girl or a south Thai girl, reason I'm asking is because my Missus (hopefully X Missus soon) is Isarn and from living there before and being round Isarn it was just "big gold" "big house" "big truck" syndrome, this is not based on just BGs I've seen it from women who are also teachers and govt off who are married to farang

Sometimes Thailand as a whole can be depressing with the poverty and daily grind and BS here, whenever I feel stressed or p!ssed off I do meditate and think about nothiness at it works!!
