  1. We are now well into the 21st century. It is possible for a person to live in let us say Belfast, and to be a citizen of The Republic of Ireland, vote in local and general elections, worship at the church of his choice, and send his children to the school of his choice. By the same token it is possible for a person to live in Dublin, to be a British Subject, vote in local and general elections, worship at the church of his choice and send his children to the school of his choice. Whether you have a green or red passport makes no difference. The Queen has visited Ireland, The President of Ireland has visited the UK. We lent them a lot of money when they were bust, they paid it back. None of this involves shooting policemen or blowing up your neighbours, nor does it have anything to do with what happened at Drogheda 400 years ago.

Back to the topic, this fellow Diver is a bit silly if he thinks that thumbing his nose at the British from wherever he is in Thailand will gain him a: sympathy or b: long term freedom. Anonymity may have been a better policy!

Citizens of the Irish Republic living in UK can vote in UK elections. But I believe that UK citizens living in Ireland are not permitted to vote there. Isn't that the case ?

  2. Cowardly scum, bravest thing they ever did was walk up behind off duty officers and put one in the back of their heads when they wernt looking. Send him back now!

Almost as cowardly as the Loyalist death squads shooting innocent catholic taxi driver in the back of the head.

There was bad on both sides, I think we could all agree with that.

Where is the good in the vicious IRA or the murderous Unionist extremists?

Must be very deeply buried inside them.

  3. The monks will be sitting inside the temple counting their millions and going .......SUCKER!!!!!!!

He is not doing this for the monks. He does it for his own well-being. He sees a job that needs doing, and makes his contribution to the community. .

A selfless act which is a valuable contribution does not make him a sucker, surely.

A selfless act for his own well-being?? thumbsup.gif

I appreciate the point you are making, Maybe I should have worded it more carefully. but I dont see these two as mutually exclusive. The fact that he is doing something for the community (selfless) makes him happy (well-being), as I see it. Selfless, surely means "less for self", it doesn't mean "nothing for self".

I don't assume that his sole intention was to create personal happiness.

But, then again, what do I know ? smile.png

  4. Reading the Washington post side of the story, this sounds more like a lady who is in charge of customer service for the airline got bad service and ejected the person in the crew that was responsible for it (the purser - NOT the flight attendant who gave her the nuts).

I.e. the issue would appear to be the purser's attitude to their job, rather than the woman's one.

The plane wasn't in the air, and if it took 2 minutes to get back to the gate, it probably wasn't on the runway either. Saying it had to return to the airport makes people think it was already in the air and turned around. Journalism at the level we've come to expect from tabloids?

who believes what is written in Newspapers anyway ? Journalism ??whistling.gif

  5. Germany is an immature democracy. Any country that is so constitutionally fragile that it must ban and outlaw not only designated political parties but political opinion and even clothing with political opinions on them is no model for the world. Not to mention banning publications and even speech. Freedom of political speech, no matter how repellant to the majority or the plurality, is the one and only criteria for a strong democracy. Germany doesn't fit that role.

so true. Few politicians have the conviction or strength of character to support this level of freedom. In the face of the next election, moral principles take second place.

"Freedom includes the right to say what others may object to and resent...the essence of citizenship is to be tolerant of strong and provocative words" John Diefenbaker

  6. I admit I am ignorant of US and Indian (or any country's) corporate law, but some people here are suggesting that UCL was a subsidiary of Union Carbide whilst at the same time being owned by the Indian people. Does that mean that UC had no interest in UCL, or only a minority interest ? Was UCL owned in totality by an Indian shareholding ? To this simple Joe Public, it all sounds like legal wriggling - the sort of practise which makes people very aware of the difference between the Law and justice.

The Law is what Governments give, but justice is what the people need.

  7. Didn't the people of the Islands have a referendum or vote on this issue at one point in time?

Yes & wasn't that a fair & balanced out come--- ask just the British land owners on there .... Do you want things to remain as they are.

Yes mate was the surprised answer, in March 2013 by 99.8% (there still looking to hang the 1 guy that voted no).

Much the same vote was recorded in Gibraltar, a lump of rock that is actually join to Spain by a road, --this is part of England also, because just the people on the rock say so.

    .

Something akin to asking the republican party only---who should be the next president.....fair & balanced.

the largest nationality group of foreign land owners in Argentina is ......... the British

  8. And so do my kids living in Sweden. Mother is Thai. 20min in sun and tanned as a pro. Im jealous.

My 28yo son is half Thai/Australian, he has never looked anything like his Mum, except maybe he gets a hell of a suntan. In Oz people don't believe him when he points his Mum out. A few years ago at a local Thai Wat in Sydney I saw a Thai/farung boy who was pure blonde. I could not believe it. Just the way the genes tumble I guess.

and so many girls in Asia trying to stay out of the sun to keep their skin pale . . . strange world smile.png

  9. So, the Chinese economy and banking industry is so honestly reported. . . really ? No corruption there, of course.

=== ditto === Russian economy and banking industry .................... really ? No corruption there, of course.

and, China is the world's largest gold producer, by far. With USA 3rd, and Russia 4th. So, is it surprising that these countries value gold ?

Ranting at China, Russia or USA is so much "hot air". The "big" nations of the world are inextricably linked by trade.

That which hurts one, hurts all.

This article was obviously drafted by an high-school economics enthusiast.

  10. I think that to make any change viable we need to start with the basics.

A Thai Constitution that cannot be changed willy nilly by politicians but only (for example) the vote of the majority of people in the majority of provinces.

Once that bedrock foundation is in place - with the separation of powers locked into the Constitution - then the rest of whatever is deemed (by the Thai people) to be needed can be introduced (tested against the Constitution).

Who will formulate the Constitution ?

Representatives of the electorate, maybe ?

But, wait a moment, haven't these elected representatives already had the opportunity to put the Kingdom on the right road?

    So, what next?

Maybe, a benign dictator will do it. whistling.gif

  11. Oh dear my friend. Enjoy your stay in Thai prison. You have earned it.

I guess you did not read everything:

The man was escorted out by airport security. No charges were reportedly filed, but he was blacklisted from the airline.wai.gif

yes, one wonders why Thai Immigration didn't put him on the next flight back to his departure point. Unless this is the type of visitor that is being welcomed these days.

  12.

Muslims before Columbus, Vikings before the Muslims, Phoenicians before the Vikings, Egyptians before the Phoenicians and no doubt some African kid on a log that trumped them all.

It is not who discovered Americas, but who 'developed' it.

There is little or no arguments that Latinos, English and French produced the most profound effect.

    Without going into the morals.

Dont forget the profound commercial effects of the Italian Mafia. whistling.gif

  13. he is so wrong.the first ones to discover america were the asian ,about 20,000 years ago, through the boering strait

That theory is pretty strong but I'd like to add an adjustment to that I recently heard about. Sorry, no link. What I read was that the people who did migrate that way had ALREADY differentiated ethnically as Native American types rather than what we consider as "Asians" and that happened before the migration. So they weren't Asians like Han Chinese. Already something different.

Of course from that migration came some amazing ancient civilizations all over the Americas, complete with complex cities, pyramids, etc.

    You are correct.

The theory is that there were many waves of migration, across asia and into north america.

During the many thousands of years, after leaving Africa, there was sufficient evolutionary time enough to develop distinct "racial" types.

It all stated in Africa . . . . ( Bible fundamentalists, please ignore that last sentence ).

  14. People from what is now Korea discovered America. Their descendants are the Native American Indians. Their origins were traced using DNA. They got there during the last ice age when the sea was frozen between what is now Alaska and Russia.

Christopher Columbus discovered the Bahamas, not America, on his first voyage. The Vikings had been visiting America for hundreds of years before Columbus. So why does the USA celebrate Columbus day?

and where did the first inhabitants of Korea originate ?

Why start the timeline in Korea ?

  15. Talk to at least 2 firms of English speaking lawyers (assuming you are an anglophone) in the possible countries. Avoid company formation businesses at this stage..

If they are any good, the legal firms wont charge for preliminary discussions, because they will be hoping for your custom.

Time spent at the preliminary stage will be worth it. Be very sure what are your reasons for opting for one adminstration over another.

  16. Wait for it !. Not time to celebrate yet.

Just maybe this judgement was given to neutralise some of the reasoning behind UK's flirtation with exiting the EU.

Wait until after 2015 Elections in UK, then the decision could be reversed following a formal EU challenge, it's objective having been accomplished.

However shaky the UK's finances are, they are better than most other EU members, and the richer EU nations certainly dont want to lose a major contributor.

  17. She only wants freedom of movement so the majority actually end up in the UK rather than Germany!

If they keep allowing poor countries into the EU then they will continue to have economic migration which is not really what it was intended for!

Even if/when the UK leaves the EU, the UK government would be unlikely to restrict immigration.

They are not able to define what would be an appropriate level and nature of immigration..

They don't have the financial resources that would be required to police the borders and coastline effectively, despite having the real advantage of being an island nation.

  18. "British authorities"...

No, they are observers and possible advisers, but they have no authority in Thailand.

You seem to have trouble understanding English. They are British authorities because they have authority in Britain. It doesn't say they have authority in Thailand. If President Obama visits another country, for example Thailand he's called the US president even though he's not the president of Thailand.

We must remember that English is not the first language of some contributors here. . . . .smile.png
