  1. I wish the 747.47 was my bill..

My bill is always at least 4,500 baht :)

I think the bill collector didn't read your meter last month, hence the same amount. When they read your meter again, it should be okay :D

  2. Well, the crosswalks with pedestrian-activated signals do have better lighting at night than the rest of the road. Makes you a better target at night, I guess. At least you'll be "in the right" and not jay-walking when you're hit in one of these zebra-zones. But, something tells me that as a westerner, I'd be expected to pay for the damage to the vehicle if I were hit while legally crossing the street, using a light at a cross-walk.

The situation in CM is exactly the opposite of the college town where we lived in the States. It seemed that pedestrian students had an absolute right to walk onto the street whenever and wherever they wanted, with about as much awareness as scared cows in Indian. Every so often one would get hit and there was always much outrage if the driver wasn't charged for hitting someone jay-walking on a dark night.

I think the whole state of California gives those rights to any pedestrian, at any time.

  3. My experience with them is, when the light is red, and I can see someone wants to pass, I stop and let them pass. When the crossing is empty, I go. As a driver, I like it. As a pedestrian, watch out! I think it is a bad idea to teach drivers to 'ignore' a red light, but the rules are different here it seems. Do the drivers act like this anywhere else?

  4. Ajarn where is Lamduan? I live on Tanawan 2 is it anywhere near that?
    Rich,

It's not too far. Take the river road off the superhiway, pass the rimping plaza where the tourist police have a office, it's close to where the Elizabethan ( sp) Room used to be & on the right hand side. Next door to the temple.

    Always lots of folks there.

The wife loves the suki there.

It is not the same place that is next to a wat. That place is newer, and popular, but their Khaw Soi doesn't have the same 'bite'. Lamduan is about a block further down the road, on the left hand side. It is across from a big empty parking lot...

Sorry. I was mistaken. At least I was close. :)

The word is that that is why they opened- because they would be close to Lamduan :D

  5. Kasikorn has at least two kinds if debit cards. One for in-country (free) which has no name on it, and a out-of-country card for 300 baht which will have your name on the card...

Oh, I wasnt aware of that.

Ajarn, can you get that card quite easily then or have to meet certain criteria? Ive had an account with K-Bank for about a year, but its pretty dormant with just some funds sitting in there. Use Bangkok Bank the most. Maybe they would want a more active account to issue this card?

In my case, Kasikorn offers them to me as an option. If I am travelling outside the country, I can not use the free ATM card, so if I want to pay the 300 baht fee, I will be issued (in a week) with a card with my name on it. I keep a lot of money with them, but I don't think it makes a difference. I use it with no problems, except it is usefull on some online purchases only. I use my citibank debit card for most of my online purchases.

  6. I only need a credit card for online purchases, so the virtual credit card sounds interesting. Have a look if the Bkk bank has one two, otherwise I'll check it out at the K-bank. Have at both banks an account.

If you only sometimes can use a debit card for online purchases, as Ajarn says, then I go for a credit card, just to prevent possible frustration.

Thanks all for your replies. :)

I got a Kasikorn DEBIT card especially for on-line use but find its not accepted when I try to book hotels. And even when I go to the hotel desk in person they say we only accept CREDIT CARDS .I have to use one of my UK credit cards.

The on-line booking form always asks you for "the name on the Card" but there's no name on the Card. It just says "privileged member" whatever that means. It also has on it "electronic use only". So, they do accept it at Rimping etc. and of course its useful for ATM's.

Maybe Kasikorn have another more appropriate Card but strangely they do market this one -K-DEBIT CARD - as useful for on-line purchases. I've only tried hotels so far.

  7. It's a question that as a possible expat I have been thinking long and hard about,, I like Phuket the beaches fishing etc. I like river fishing [flyfishing] but apart from cheaper housing what else is there in chiangmai to do if you are retired?????? :)

    Nothing. Enjoy Phuket :D

  9. I always have been able to get around those stupid credit cards. Not so anymore, now I need one and I don't know a thing about it. :)

I need Mastercard or Visa. Which one is better, easier, cheaper, more accepted anywhere?

Can you get it at the Bangkok Bank or do I need to go somewhere else?

    What's the procedure?

What else is important to know about these yukkie cards, other than that you need to be careful with it?

    Thanks in advance.

Do you need a credit card, or a debit card? A debit card is either Visa or Mastercard, and can be requested from your bank as an ATM card. But it can be used sometimes for online purchases. To get a credit card, you need credit to get it, again, from your local bank. I think both cards are the same, good or bad.

  10. Hi, I need to replace the sand in my swimming pool filter. I was quoted 6,500 baht for the job, but I want to find someplace cheaper. Any ideas?

I order my sand in Pool shop, on Hang Dong road / opposite Lostus... If I remenber, it was 75 THB/big bag (50Kg ?)

Don't forget, you need calibrated and clean sand for pool, not sands for cement :-)

Thank you phanu for your information :)

  11. i think Ajarns talkin about the one one shown in this video :)

was it meant to be a secret? :D

That is the place. Nice people, good food. I have been a regular cutomer for more than 20 years.

They have great Muu Satay, and Paw Pia Tawt too :D

Is that the place with all the photos of Thaksin along one wall?

Yes, the word is that he (or someone acting for him) used to come in regularly :D

  12. When you and your girlfriend ate there, and you received a small bowl while your girlfriend received a large bowl, why did you not mention it to the owner THEN? Why wait to complain now?

I think the best Khao Soi is Lamduan Khao Soi in Farham..20 baht :)

First of all I was there with my wife. I do not have a girlfriend. Second of all I am not the type of person that complains to the owners unless i receive uncooked food or something like that. I just never go there again and will tell others. The point of this thread is not to cry over spilt milk it is to help other Khao Soi lovers to avoid the place.

Still, it doesn't make sense to me that you would not complain to the owner- unless you were afraid to...

Better to come here anonymously to complain, right?

Why are you complaining about me warning people to stay away from this place ??

Because your wife was quite satisfied and you weren't, and because I think you are not a good customer :D

  13. I think the best Khao Soi is Lamduan Khao Soi in Farham..20 baht :D

Sorry, ole mate, but if that's the one I'm thinking of it's not a patch on my regular in the old city. I'll keep that un under wraps for now... don't want tipping farangs ruining the ambience... present company accepted. :)
