  1. When they bought it, they did add some nice things to the menu in the beginning, but one partner did not last for long. Didn't he have a motorcycle accident and return home?

My opinion of JJs at that time was a very comfortable place with pretty good Thai food and mostly psuedo-farang food with very few good items on the menu.

Yeah, he had an accident about 3 years in, and he went home. His partner is still around...

Yeah, the food at jj's was Psuedo-Farang, but with the state of farang food in Chiang Mai at the time, it was pretty good :)

Thapae road was two-way then... :D

Does anyone remember Croissant restaurant on Thapae, a bit up from America? That was good while it lasted, because in addition to air conditioning they threw in free movies. I could veg the better part of the day there

I remember the crazy guy who was the manager at the time. I hope he isn't around anymore. :D

  2. I only recall a couple of people eating at the America Restaurant and I didn't bother after hearing their negative reports.

That was after Dave sold it. The new owners were not very interested in the place and just ran it into the ground.

    Dave, 'the duke'?

I think that one of the new owners ran it quite well. When he left it in the hands of his partner, he ran it into the ground around 1995. Before America opened, I think the farang food at JJ's was pretty good.

  3. Good points/suggestions from both UG and Nienke - agree 100%.

If you still want to go and buy from a shop, the main market seems to be at Pra Tu Hai Ya - at the eastern end of Hai Ya Road (which runs east from Mahidol Road to Route 108 - access from Mahidol Road when driving south is the last road on your left about 200 metres before you reach the flyover). Several pet supplies shops on your left - the animals are in the soi behind them. Buyer beware..........

I agree, and I wanted to say that I have had a good experience with buying a Shitzu there about 5 years ago for 2700 baht. It has done well, and is still acting like the puppy I bought :)

  4. Site seems to be down.

It seems to have been down since at least this morning, when I clicked the link from an email.

But I agree with UG, I feel the best, most consistently prepared food in Chiang Mai is at The Dukes :)

  5. I know what Phuket is like because I have lived there too. Plus, I have been living here for 25 years.

Just because it is about Phuket doesn't mean it is NOT about Thailand too. Maybe you need a clue....

And maybe you need to just relax or ask for a change of meds.

Nobody doubts your vast expertise but you do come across rather bullyish in your approach, sometimes even to newbies with fairly innocent posts or questions.

Did you read the message I was responding to?

Maybe you need a clue too :)

  6. well if you've lived in phuket, and thailand for 25 yrs, your the ideal person to describe what the people of chiangmai are like, a town , a city are as only as good as its people, i'll lay a little bet with you, that when you lived in phuket , patong was a tiny fishing village, with about 3 bars.

if im wrong i owe you a beer.

Sorry, you are wrong, and I don't drink

  7. Most of your items (complaints) are about Thailand..

    Chiang Mai is in Thailand

i think Doppa knows where Chiang Mai is !

I make it that at least 5 points out of the 8 are about living on a island so how do you make it to be ''most of your items are about Thailand'' ??? besides unless you have lived on a island for some time you wouldn't have a clue to what it is like.

I know what Phuket is like because I have lived there too. Plus, I have been living here for 25 years.

Just because it is about Phuket doesn't mean it is NOT about Thailand too. Maybe you need a clue....

  8. Don't really want to lower your hopes but every second young expat who comes to Thailand wants to be a teacher. There are only just so many jobs :o

Agreed. Chiang Mai is a tough market to break into. Try Lamohun or Lampang for better results.

Also, in the last couple of months, nobody is really looking for anyone because of the holidays. Try looking in Mid/late May, when the 'desperates' will be looking. :D

  9. hi all, 12 of us going to hire a van and drive to Pai via CM this weekend.

I have been to CM alone few times and never felt unsafe.

But i heard Pai is not that safe for foreigners. Is there any police problems? We won't be drinking or drugs or partying. Just a visit to nature.

any tips or tricks, advice highly appreciable.

    thanks.

I have been everywhere in Thailand and Pai is the biggest rip off of any of the villages I visited. 65 baht for a small cup of hot chocolate. Walking street is a joke. Save your money

You have been everywhere in Thailand? Bullshit!!! :o

  10. Whack on the A/C at full blast and float away on a breeze of serenity and blissfullness.

    Genius!

I really am confused at some people how complain about the heat yet are so stingy about the a/c. Yet they waste so much money on booze, designer clothes and the lottery. Set the a/c on to 25-26C and the cost is only about 10-20 baht per day.

Remember, BKK 30 years ago was not the concrete jungle it is today.

It was a lot worse! Tons of traffic and pollution! :o

But you are right about aircon :D

  11. I always listen to them, especially if in my house...5, 7, 9, 11 calls mean some luck for me, 6, 8, 10, 12 calls means I need to watch my ass! :o

Only if they are strong calls, too. The last one, if weaker at all, means it doesn't count...

A few years ago, I caught a big one in an upstairs bedroom. It's tail came off in my hand, and the dam_n thing shit on my wall- I never was able to get rid of that shit mark. It ended up in some newspaper, being thrown off my balcony into the neighbors yard.

  12. > .who then provide the work permits.

No, NOBODY provides work permits unless they're paying a salary of at least 65,000 baht a month and do all the paperwork. There simply is no 'volunteer' work permit.

I don't think that is true. How can teachers get a WP? Hardly anyone gets 65,000 baht per month

  13. My experience today was that there is a totally new crew in there - I recognized only one senior officer way in the back and the rest seemed to be real newbies. Grindingly slow compared to last year - I was number 18 and nobody even glanced at my application until almost 3pm - even the 90-day check-ins seemed to be sitting around for a long time, some even carryovers from the morning.

In my experience, the folks are around there generaly for about two years before there next assignment :o

  14. We would like to rent at first. Building takes too long. We would like to open the doors in May or June. I am not sure if that would be mostly new arrivals. We have actually a very mixed group of students. I would be looking at anything from 200-400 m2 if there is parking available. I found something very nice in road 1001 but not sure if that is not a little too far.

Well, since hiway 1001 is more than 100 kilometers long, it might a lttle be too far. I live at kilomet tii 2, and it is too far for KFC

Whaaaaat? Hey Larry....don't tell me you eat KFC....? With the home-grown Thai barbequed chicken available at every market.... and the chain of 'Gai yaang haa daw' too. I thought only thais went for that expensive rubbish drowned in batter.....

Maybe your brained is fried and you can't understand simple English... I said it was too far for KFC, so no I don't eat KFC.

  15. US$560. Not a huge amount of money. About a months salary for an English teacher.

To waste any more on a lawyer which would probably achieve zero is a further waste of money. Sit back, relax and lick your wounds.

Agreed 100% Even if you win, you will never collect anything.

  16. > If you think about the many "blood sports" there are in the world "Boxing" and "fox hunting"

    > for example And the thrill of watching two opponents beating the S### out of each other, while

    > the crowd roars with delight, cheering their fighter on.

Though arguably the fighters are there by choice, the bull most likely would prefer to be some place else. :o You're right about the fox hunt of course, but that's equally controversial.

For cock fights though I'm not sure it's on a similar level of controversy.. You just put two cocks together and let them do what cocks do. (Obviously when you start putting blades on their feet then that's not okay.. Though I haven't seen this in Thailand so far). Usually what happens is that one cock is the obvious winner (other trying to run away) and at that point the fight is stopped.

Cock fighting is illegal in Thailand

  17. My friend in Chiang Mai told me that a bar girl was murdered two nights ago by a foreigner. I haven't found any details on the web. Can anyone confirm this, and provide any info from the local media? I have always wondered how many of these girls go missing and just disappear. In most countries prostitutes are at high risk of murder.

I imagine the risk is even higher in Thailand because it doesn't seem like anyone tries to keep track of them, or go to the police if one disappears. It is sad enough that the girls have to work in this business because of the poverty, but it seems they have nobody to turn to, and no organizations advocating for their safety.

There isn't much difference between Thailand and most other countries with prostituton. The main difference is that there are places that provide safety and support to them.

  18. Almost every place with a 'Resort' is going to give you the same as 'Suansawan' (the same name as my place, but anyway...). Depending on your level of pampering- want a color tv with cable? If yes, this will limit your options a lot. but I'm sure you will find an older, professional place to stay :o

You will find many 'resorts' each with different facilities, some more than Away Suansawan some less. Pampering can come in a lot more forms than 'watching cable TV'. Look around and find what is best for you, as I said in my post I don't have exactly what you want.

Why this gentleman decides my resort is unprofessional is beyond me, I doubt he has ever been

Yes, I was only saying he had a lot of choices. I would not recommend you, but only because I haven't been there...

    I apologise for the misunderstanding

    Apology accepted :D
