  1. RIP.

I hate it when people don't buy insurance, don't arrange self-insurance -- then expect the taxpayer to "do the right thing". The right thing is not to be a burden on others. I have told my sister that if I die here - that the cheapest option is the best option and whatever remains in the estate should be used to help out friends of mine (which she has been introduced to) from time-to-time. If there is an option to "feed me to the fishes" at a discount rate - then so be it.

The embassy is not there to be a social service... that is not it's function.

I hate it when dodgy stuff gets covered up

I don't like things getting covered up either, but this is not the UK. "The plan was to move to Thailand, find a job and live there and when you live there you don't really get travel insurance.". So he was planning on leaving the UK - likely not paying UK taxes - working in Thailand, then expecting to have the UK taxpayer pay for it? He was making a choice to move here. The UK is no more responsible for someone who has left the country than some starving person in Uganda. He also made the choice to save money and not get travel insurance. Guess what - he was not working yet, he was looking.... you can get travel insurance for lengthy periods of time during the transition. There is no exclusion that indicates that if you are "looking for work" you cannot buy it. If the family thinks there is something being covered up, then let them pay for an independent (local) autopsy.

Not sure a 26 year old lad would know all of the intricate dangers and details needed to cover all of his bases. I believe it's the government's responsibility to warn and educate these young people on the best course of action before travelling to these countries.

  2. Another plastic surgery patient dies

    The Nation

Dr Sompop Sansiri and his plastic-surgery clinic have run into serious legal trouble after a British woman died during hip surgery late on Thursday.

BANGKOK: -- Huai Khwang clinic closed after Briton's death, two doctors could face jail time

Plastic surgery in Thailand has made the headlines again, this time because of the death of a British customer - a 24-year-old woman who died while undergoing hip surgery in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district late on Thursday.

The clinic was immediately slapped with a 60-day closure order, while the two doctors involved in the fatal procedure are subject to investigations by both police and the Public Health Ministry.

SP Clinic owner Dr Sompop Sansiri, who performed the surgery, is charged with recklessness leading to the death of a person.

If convicted, he will face up to 10 years in jail and/or a fine of up to Bt20,000.

Sompop is also set to face several other charges related to the case. He was found to have been performing the surgery beyond authorised hours. His clinic was supposed to close by 8pm, but the death reportedly took place at around 11.30pm.

The body of the victim was also found to have been moved from the second floor of the clinic to the first floor, something that could violate legal clauses governing the clinic's operation, according to police.

In addition, Sompop is in fact a licensed general-practice doctor and has no licence to perform plastic surgery.

In performing the surgery without a licence, he risks up to three years in jail and/or a fine of up to Bt60,000.

His clinic was allowed to operate because it had been able to produce the licence of Dr Narongdej Jiarapeepan, a surgeon.

However, given that Narongdej did not perform the surgery on Thursday, he will likely face charges of allowing another person to perform surgery at premises authorised by his licence.

Sompop has reportedly so far denied any wrongdoing, insisting that he proceeded in line with proper surgical procedures.

At this point, it remains unclear why the Briton died during the surgery.

It was not her first time at the clinic, as she had also undergone surgery there on October 14.

Her body was taken to Police General Hospital for an autopsy, as the authorities seek to determine the exact cause of death.

The court has approved Sompop's bail request and released him on a Bt200,000 guarantee.

Health Service Support Department director-general Dr Boonrueang Trairueangworawat said the doctors involved in the case had clearly violated the Medical Facilities Act. "We will forward the case to the Medical Council of Thailand for further action," he said.

Last month, an event product presenter also succumbed during plastic surgery at another clinic, reportedly because of an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic.

A fine of 20,000 baht. That's peanuts for criminals.

  3. The Dr is named and the clinic identified???!!!

If anyone happens to know, what is the name of the clinic?

    Is it SP Clinic?

If so, it looks like his reputation is somewhat well identified...http://spclinicdangeroursdrsompobwarning.blogspot.com/2011/12/sp-clinic-warning-botched-surgeries-by.html

I read the link. One pissed off customer however i say one because it is the same person. also it is clear that whomever is writing it all is plugging some other guy for business a Dr Pitch

Good heads up. Passed on to FCO.

  4. RIP. Brits and Burmese should think twice before coming to Thailand.

Oh what bad timing for the thais. Perhaps the British police will be buying a house instead of renting one. Quite frankly the whole country could do with a shake up. People need to know this host country is one of the most dangerous countries to visit. More needs to be done to stop brits from travelling to thailand. They don't deserve our custom.

  5. "In their new overseas home, an American family soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, and they frantically look for a safe escape in an environment where foreigners are being immediately executed."

Strange that the actor is allegedly supporting a group who are attempting to lay the conditions for a coup. He has either been conned or being extremely opportunistic.

Jesus Wept dude are you on crack?

  6. I've got to agree with the OP about feeling pissed about a haircut like that. I'm sure if the lad had returned home with a reasonable haircut everyone would have been happier, especially the poor lad that's been humiliated.

'Flogging the director won't help the lad though, but as a dad I would feel the same way if my son came home like that.

Cheers to you for sticking up for your son, but now the best lesson you can teach your son is to show some restraint and to be a better man that the director.

    Good luck with it all.

I totally agree our kids need to know we do stand by them. That is very important. It is without doubt an abuse of power even if it was to make a point this is not the way to do it.

It is without doubt an abuse of power. it might even be a dig at you being foriegn? I have seen this kind of abuse before as i spent years working in education in thailand and asia. These problems are the tip of many isssues.

  9. Terrible.

Were these people not aware of what happened to the little girl a month ago.

    RIP little man.

Sadly enough, your answer shows how much you know about Thai people and their way of life.

Thai people don't like to be bothered with what happened yesterday.

    Yesterday is the past.

You can not change it anymore.

Looking backwards will hinder you in progressing forward.

Thai people are not concerned about what happen to anybody.

If anybody get sick or die, it is only because carry have a bad Karma from their present or their previous life.

Sharing your feelings with the sick or the dead will bring bad Karma over you as well.

    It is not your fault.

    So stay away from it

Sadly you know too much about thailand.

"yesterday is in the past" in other words not holding yourself or anyone responsible and what is even worse not learning from your mistakes!

Good luck with that kind of society.

    Animals.

  10. 3 golden rules when overstaying : don't start trouble, don't do anything illegal AND have enough money to get yourself out of the situation

...somebody reported him in, which means he broke number 1

...when being searched he broke number 2

...and then he broke number 3 or we wouldn't be seeing his picture

3 strikes and you're OUT... err... IN detention in this case.

    These are words of wisdom

Nice toung and cheek but those of you reading this laughing should be warned that half of it is real!!!

  12. One of the problems associated with providing legitimate transport is the cost of maintaining a good and safe service. I had a transport company in France for a while and the rules and regulations were almost prohibitive, but necessary. Vehicles were rigorously checked every year, bus drivers go nowhere without a tachometer, every driver has to have an annual medical and paperwork is checked regularly at random.

BUT, young Felix and many thousands like him come here looking for a cheap holiday and cheap transport, you've only got to read the forums! Do they ask the bus driver where the seat belts are, do they notice the tyres? As jalansanitwong says, they're here on an adventure, what's a couple of bald tyres between friends?

As long as there is no properly controlled legislation to stop these operators, they will continue their practice and carry on killing tourists.

If you want to avoid the dangers, get a plane or a ferry.

Very sad for Mrs Robinson, but suing the bus company is not going to make one iota of difference to the public transport system in Thailand!

I sadly agree that plus the useless thai politicians who seem to forget everything by monday morning are just the sort you need to get F**** all done about it!
