  1. Interesting.

How is this done properly then ?

That's a pretty in-depth subject. First and foremost would be standard server security. Make sure you're protected against SQL and file injection attacks, XSS attacks, ensure IP restrictions and SSH keys are in place, etc. As for bitcoind itself, there's various things you can do. Automated flush functionality so you set a balance limit, and any excess funds are automatically flushed to an offline wallet. This way, even if a hacker does get in, the most you'll ever lose is a small float, and not the entire bank.

Then for example, one is Shamir's Secret Sharing Scheme:

    http://point-at-infinity.org/ssss/

So your private key / wallet password is split into encrypted chunks, and stored on different servers. You can add in time based mechanisms, similar to how store safes around the world are on a timer, so one or two chunks of that private key is only online for a couple minutes a day. You could use bait & kill switches, so basically spread a few fake wallets around your server(s), and if any ever get touched, hit the kill switch rendering the actual wallet useless. Then obviously basic user-side protection -- one-way encryption of passwords, 2FA, IP restrictions, etc.

Again though, all this type of thing is only required if you're running more of a "real-time" operation, and have money constantly flowing in & out. If you're just accepting payments for a product / service, then this isn't really needed. However, if you are doing a "real-time" operation, then this is all basically necessary, and if you don't do it now, you will after you get hacked a few times. Well, either that or you'll just close your doors.

  2. There's two reservations I have about using APIs such as Bitpay:

1.) You have to store the API key / info in the site's software, and if the software can access it, so can hackers. Then it depends on the API you're using. Not sure about Bitpay, but for example, if someone is using Coinbase a hacker could get into the database, find their Coinbase API key, and 10 seconds later the Coinbase account is empty. I've seen it happen before.

2.) A URL on your site has to accept IPN requests. So every time a payment comes into your Bitpay account, the Bitpay server will send a request to your server letting you know. This is a security vulnerability, and hackers will find & hammer that URL with 500,000+ requests an hour with hopes of getting your system to accept fraudulent payments.

We've tried various APIs, and personally just use bitcoind now, which is basically the whole "be your own bank" premise of bitcoin. There's no restrictions or limitations, no merchant fees, it's instant, robust, secure (if done properly), and you have complete flexibility over how to handle your own money.

It all depends on what you're doing though. If you have an existing eCommerce store and want to add bitcoin to the list of accepted payment methods, then something like Bitpay is probably better. If you're starting a more "real-time" type operation, such as an exchange, trading platform, gambling site, or anything of that nature where funds are constantly moving, then bitcoind is the best choice. Getting setup with bitcoind properly takes quite a bit more in the technical arena though.

  3. I use Frontline of course, then regular showers, keep the yard weeded, etc.

Last year it was hell for my dogs, and I tried nearly everything. The one thing I found that actually dramatically helped was Bayticol. You can generally get it at any decent sized pet store:

    20120311130912img.jpg

I simply put 2 - 3mL into the water bucket when I mop the floor, and it works wonders. It'll stink up your house for a couple hours each time, so make sure to leave the windows / doors open while mopping. Fleas, ticks and mites seem to absolutely hate it, so your house is always flea & tick free, plus assuming your dogs spend a good amount of time laying on the floor, any fleas / ticks from outside that latched on don't seem to stick around.

  4. I'm going to try that. Buy a bottle of whiskey, walk into a night club, settle myself in and start drinking away while offering the staff some drinks too. After I'm piss drunk, I'll just have a nap on their sofa, then walk out within paying a single baht to the club.

In a lot of Thai bars, you actually can bring your own whiskey in. But you do have to pay for the ice, coke, and soda water to mix with. I do this sometimes because I like to drink gin, and the bars near me don't have it.

Oh yeah, that's fine, and I've done it loads too. If you bring your own bottle in, you pay a corkage / opening fee though (generally included in the mixers + ice). Sounds as though OP was dismayed they wanted a fee for drinking there / mixers, and thinks the Thai staff should be more appreciative for sharing his Hong Tong with them, and sleeping on their sofa.

OP, if anything I'd consider yourself lucky this time around. Try that in the wrong place, and you're going to end up in the hospital, eh?

  5. 3 months overstay and Persona non Grata. Try overstaying in the UK and see what happens..........Welcome back Sir next time !!

I don't know about the UK, but I know someone who overstayed in Canada for 5 years. When he left back to his home country (Eastern Europe), no fee, no questions, nothing -- as there are no exit points in Canada. Then about 10 months later he was actually granted permanent residency status to Canada.

  6. As for places to buy and sell BC's...where is the best option for now and from my angle, not necessarily the most well known, but an up and coming location that has something going for it.

It really depends on how you're setup for banking, and how you want to transfer funds to / from BTC. For example, I'm Canadian with Canadian bank account, so I go through https://cavirtex.com/, and it's great for me.

What type of project are you doing? Are you looking to invest / speculate? Or are you setting up an online operation that is going to accept BTC? If so, that's a different ballgame than just buying / selling BTC, and the one I have most experience in.

  7. Why do you insist on injections when you can administer tablets into their food?

Oh, my one dog is back to being 100% now actually. Was never worried about it, but he had something going on, and whatever it was has run its course and he's back to shitting normally, full energy, and constant smile. I just thought it could be worms, because it was obviously something in his stomach, plus his eyes were a little red.

Nonetheless, this just got me thinking about their shots. They each had 3 shots when they were pups -- rabies, deworming, and fleas / ticks. It's been a couple years, so I'm assuming it's time to shoot them up again. They probably don't need it, but it can only be beneficial for them. As for why injections, I don't know -- I'm not a doctor, so you'd have to ask a vet that one, but that's how they come. I just assumed it was because they're more potent / long lasting, and will help affect the system for a good year, versus a month like the tablets.

So first, should I even bother with getting them booster shots? They're perfectly healthy and problem free, but it's been over 2 years, so should probably get them shot up again, no? I just assumed it was the same as human immunizations. I've never measles or hepatitis, but I've been immunized for them several times.

Assuming yes, what do I all need here? Rabies, 5-in-1, and that's it? Is there anything else I should be getting? If I'm going to do a round of shots, I might as well get them all out of the way for the next couple years.

  8. Not to sound like a complete retard, but what's the difference between a IM and SQ injection?

As for de worming a dog no injections are required. Tablets mixed up in the dog's food are the preferred and common method of de worming. As for fleas, there are many good anti flea shampoos available. No need for injections again.

Thanks for the explantion on IM / SQ injections, and appreciate. Of course I use Frontline, the special shampoo, Bayticol when I mop the floor, give them pills, and things like that. But I thought giving them a booster shot every say 12 - 18 months was quite beneficial? They're both over 2 years old now, and have only had shots once when they were pups -- rabies, deworming, and flea / tick immunization. Of course use the standard stuff, but isn't it also recommended to give them a quick booster once in a while?

Anyway, vet wasn't there today, so will try again another day. Hopefully he sells me the shots though. Would prefer to do it myself, as it's easier for everyone, and the dogs hate that vet. Then again, if someone cut my testicles off, and kept poking me with needles, I probably wouldn't like them much either. :)

  9. Back in the day, this type of thing absolutely astonished me as well. I've been there and done that myself (never again).

How the hell do you go from being poor and spending like 200 baht/day, up to blowing like 5000 baht/day, then actually have the gall to act all dumbfounded and hurt when you're told it's too much money? Completely amazed me too.

Tell her to sod off and get a job, is what I'd do. If she wants to blow 5000 baht/day, then she can start a business and put in the hours needed to make 5000 baht/day.

  10. PS. Other reason is because naturally, the dogs hate getting needles. They absolutely hate the regular vet they know, and viciously bark at him when they see him, because well, he's the guy that sticks them with needles, and that's all they know. For that reason too, it'd be easier if I could just do it myself. My dogs won't kick up much of a fuss with me.

  11. Anyone know of any good literature / training materials on how to give shots to dogs yourself? I don't drive in Thailand, and I'm a little outside of town here, making it a pain just for simple shots. I have to get a friend to come by with their truck, schedule an appointment, and pack the dogs all the way into town just to see the vet for 2 mins to get shots. Either that, or I have to bribe a vet to come all the way out here just to spend 2 mins giving the dogs shots. Neither makes any sense.

That, and am I ok just to walk into a vet office, and ask for a couple vials of deworming medicine + some dog flea immunization shots? Is a vet actually going to sell me that, or just laugh at me? I do know one vet in town pretty well, and there's a chance he'd be willing to bend the rules for me, but probably not much. Definitely wouldn't be willing to break the law by selling my medicine he isn't allowed to.

They haven't been dewormed in probably 18 months though, so would like to get that done again. There's something wrong with one of my guys. He's not really sick or anything, but he's shitting every 3 hours, so has something going on in his belly. I'm guessing it's just warm season is here, so bugs are out, and he's eat the grass, so caught a little something. Not worried about it, at least not yet, but wouldn't mind getting him 100% if I can.

    Thanks in advance!

  12. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I read while in IDC, you get 200 baht/day knocked off the fee. Plus, the judge usually knocks the fee down from the original 20,000.

So say the judge fines you 12,000, and you have absolutely no money, that means 60 days in the IDC. Then they'll only release you upon having a flight booked back to the US.

  13. Reminds me of people out West. Every year it's the same bloody thing.

"Geez, it's so nice out, I wonder if we're even going to have snow this Christmas?"

A few months later in April / May.

"Can't believe how cold it is! Where the hell is spring / summer?"

Geez guys, it's only been about 15 years since the seasons shifted, because it's been the exact same every year now. You'd think they'd finally catch on, and realize seasons got moved up a couple months.

  14. Was doing some cleaning earlier, and found my old blood sugar test kit. It's an Accu-Chek Performa, and looks like:

    performa_multiclix_mg_m.jpg

Bought it about a year ago, used it for about a month, and that was it. I was quite sick for a while, and thought it might be diabetes since it runs in the family, but turns out it was just a severe mold infection instead. :) There's still a bunch of test strips and clean needles in the pouch, but may want to throw them in the garbage and replace, since they're about a year old.

Can't remember what I paid, but it was a decent amount -- 3500 baht or so. Anyway, if you're in KK, and you, anyone you know, or maybe someone up in the village could use it, feel free to drop me a PM. Free of charge. I don't want any money for it. I'll never use it again though, and don't really want to just throw it away.
