  1. Try BUPA International. Not sure for your age but for a 58 year old for Thailand it is $400 a month but if you go for $8500 deductible its $151 a month for the same coverage. Many years ago when I was about 35 I had $10,000 deductible and it was like $700 a year. Medical services in Thailand, if you go to the right place is cheap in Thailand.

    Interesting information

Would you care to elaborate on what constitutes the right place?

  2. Wolf, have you seen any of the things you mentioned in a shop anywhere in Thailand? A glue board sounds best.

Clove oil is easy to get at any chemist - and cheap (good for tooth ache too smile.png)

If you have a border - maybe dig a small trench say 2 foot wide - and top it with broken shell (top 2 inches or so) on course sand. Snakes hate to cross it so a nice barrier.

If this is the Pattaya branch, its cheaper to use broken bottles

  3. A friend of mine visited a local "good luck holyman" voodoo/fortune teller and lost his sense of smell.

He had previously complained about the smell of his wifes mudfish.

    Coincidence?

    CCC

I have been reading quite a number of threads on ThaiVisa recently,

and now I have lost my sense of humor

    Are you guys using voodoo?

  4. Why would a bunch of men ( and lets be honest here TVF is predominantly men), agree with a survey that ranks the country they ran to lower than the country they ran from?

Agree. No shortage of folk from Northern Europe in LOS, but according to the survey they should be 'super happy' back home. I wonder how happy they would be in Oslo or Gothenburg in January ? Much happier on a golf course in Hua Hin, methinks.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_in_Sweden

According to a 2011 article in The New York Times, "Numerous studies have shown that places like Denmark and Sweden that consistently score high on measures of happiness and life satisfaction also have relatively high suicide rates." Said article also reported, "Some social scientists speculate that the trends are probably unrelated and can be explained by regional factors like dark winters or cultural differences regarding suicide.

Could that mean they are the happiest when they are happy ( 1 - 2 days every summer)? After which they return to being the most... suicidal?

  5. A Charlotte, NC, man having purchased a case of very rare, very expensive cigars, insured them against fire, among other things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of cigars and without having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the man filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the man stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The man sued . . . and won. In delivering the ruling, the judge, agreeing that the claim was frivolous, stated nevertheless that the man held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure against fire, without defining what it considered to be "unacceptable fire," and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid the man $15,000 for the rare cigars he lost in "the fires." After the man cashed the check, however, the company had him arrested on 24 counts of arson. With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the man was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

He used to run a company here called:

    "Dewey, Cheatham and Howe"

  6. I have the impression that:

«Arai na» is the preferred term as opposed to "arai wa” (unless you’re with friends and relatives).

Next time I’m in BKK, should I tell the Taxi to take me to “Bang Na”, even though I want to go to “Bang Wa”?

  7. The beer price went up already for the 1st Jan. 2013, now again? Already now more expensive then in Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Austra). A high beer price means people drink more low quality brandy and rice whisky, with all the negative impacts on health and social behavior. Not a good idea.

    I have an idea

Lets start a charter service from Thailand to Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Austra).

That way we will have all the positive impacts on health and social behavior. A good idea!?

    Nicht wahr?

  8. If you are waiting for someone from a substantial ex-Thai company who has contracted or sub-contracted with a substantial Thai company for a software development, engineering, architectural or product manufacturing project to come on here and describe his experience as to whether a work permit was required or not for the minimal oversight required of such projects, i think you will have a long wait. The MFA has 2 categories of 'B' visas: one which requires a WP to be shown and one which doesn't.

All the horror outcomes as described above would apply to the more common poster who wants a Thai company to hire him or his one-man company and send the billing to Vanuatu or someplace. To get an answer of any first-hand experience might require contacting a lawyer like T&G who has direct experience in such matters and represents the big ex-Thai companies who bring such projects into Thailand.

As you seem to have deduced, I indeed am fishing, in this pond as well as others.

In that respect I must say: thank you everyone for your thoughts, opinions, links and contributions.

All in all a worthwhile endeavour from my point of view.

I was not expecting all that much.

    I am impressed.

At least now, if and when the choosen path is Thailand, the scamming will have to be on a higher level than before!.

Until next time - Talk to my lawyer

  9. On second thought

If Thai authorities do not agree, what consequences could/would I be looking at?

    - Fines

    - Incarceration

    - Litigation

    - Deportation

-“Donations” to every man and his dog

    ??

    BS

    Potentially all of the above.

Thai Working of Aliens Act 2551 - Section 51.

Any alien engaging in the work without permission shall be subject to an imprisonment of not exceeding 5 years or a fine from 2,000 baht to 100,000 baht, or both.

In the case the alien accused committing an offense under paragraph 1 agrees to return their country within the period of the investigation but not exceeding 30 days, the inquiry official may impose a fine and proceed with the return of such alien.

I was hoping for some elaboration

Maybe from someone who has: been there + done that

After all it all boils down to considering the pros and cons of as many variables as possible.
