  1. I definitely hope that the Republicans in Congress, for the future good of our country, will vigorously fight against Obama with even more determination and resolve than they have in the past. ......

Yup, Republicans are great at saying 'NO.' That word should be enshrined on their coat of arms. They should all have a big button on their business suits which says 'NO.' There's just one slight adjustment: A majority of American voters chose Obama over his opponenet. They listened to both candidates. They looked at their proposals, and over 60 million decided they want the modest guy to stay as top banana.

Yet, there are still elected reps who will continue to say 'NO' every chance they get. Yet that's not enough. They will do all they can to throw mud at Obama and hope it will stick. Anything and everything, no matter how low, in order to increase their chances of getting someone of their choosing in the power seat, four years hence. I hope they pick someone like Ryan to run. He'll lose big time, if he's honest enough to share his core beliefs.

agreed, i hope they pick Ryan as well. he knows the government finances better than just about anyone and if he gets some debate practice will wipe the floor with anyone on the other side.

  2. What a fabulous quote. This really supports the theory that Republicans are comprised of essentially two groups of people: (1) rich guys who stand to lose very large sums of money doe to income and capital gains tax issues; (2) Ignorant, paranoid, religious zealot types who cannot think for themselves, need a lot of structure in their life, afraid of government, and vote based on fear even though the Republican platform does nothing for them economically, but does allow them to keep their guns.

You are so on target! I always felt guilty as I was becoming a young successful entrepreneur businessman, because I was told I had to be Republican, so I was, donated a lot of money, and I did endorse much of the platform in those days. As the Republican party moved to the far right I finally woke up. I never for once thought of not starting a business due to tax reasons. People start businesses because they have a passion and want to win. They don't fret about silly things like "will the corporate tax rate rise?" Easy enough to just incorporate offshore, but still do business at home. So easy to solve.

This forum is inhabited with Obama haters who blather on about business, but they don't talk like businessmen, and they certainly don't understand business. I have nothing against old, rich white guys, I kind of like em. And, I do understand wanting to keep capital gains structures as they are. But, the argument that these guys are job creators is just a myth.

its not just the tax, as a businessman you should understand the importance of regulation. republicans are certainly worried about the tax consequences of obama, but even more worried about the regulatory environment. lefties like to point out how not everybody has the resources to start a business which leads to inequality. raising taxes and adding regulation on regulation in every industry is only going to dissuade people from following their passion.

  3. please dont take that too serious, im just joking around. i tell that to my students all the time just for a laugh, and tell it to my administrators (international school) every now when i feel their losing sight of the kids

Do please take more care with your punctuation and spelling, at least in those threads where you admit to being a teacher, you're not holding your end up here 8-)

i teach business, spelling and grammar are a problem for someone else... biggrin.png

  4. those who cant teach, teach gym

and those who cant teach gym, administrate

Actually being a PE teacher in the better school's an incredible racket, highly recommended for youngsters looking for career options.

Minimal prep time, no papers to grade, travel to the international competitions, only down side is you end losing a lot of Saturdays, but working maybe working 200 days a year doesn't sound so bad does it?

Plus the incentive to stay fit as you get older, I'm sure we can remember that fat gym teacher 8-)

please dont take that too serious, im just joking around. i tell that to my students all the time just for a laugh, and tell it to my administrators (international school) every now when i feel their losing sight of the kids tongue.pngwink.pngwai.gif

  5. EVA air all the way!

good service, few delays, quality meals (by airline standards), private flat screen for each seat with shows, movies, and games.

i once messed up my booking on the way back home. i booked EVA to CA and used an American airline to get back to my home city but on the way back i got the am/pm mixed up and arrived at the airport 12hrs late. when i called EVA and explained they put me on the next flight free of charge even though it was my error! i had to put myself up in LA for two days but since then i book them every time.

  6. If I can go back to this election for a while (!), I was actually fortunate enough to catch the Limbaugh Advanced Institute of Terminal Whinging last night and it was truly hilarious.

I've never heard the obnoxious buffoon sound so deflated and confused.

And he seemed shocked from reading about exit polls and interviews that demonstrated that more than half of those who voted for Obama did so on the basis of his handling of the economy, and specifically because they blamed Bush and the Republicans for making the mess in the first place.

It's heartening to hear that so many people saw through the rubbish the GOP churned out and realised what a monumental task they left for Obama.

Now if the Republicans could just do the decent thing and stop thinking about themselves for the moment, and try not to block, out of sheer spite, everything Obama tries to do to fix the economy, the USA might actually have a chance at repairing the damage.

their not blocking out of spite, their blocking because his policies are out if left field. They tried to work with him in healthcare and got locked out of the room. they tried a compromise on taxes/spending cuts and Obama reniged and asked for more. then there was simpson/bowels and nothing came of it. or the time when the president called the repblican leadership for a sit down and proceeded to lecture them and dismiss their ideas. remember that we "need to pass the bill to see whats in it." Its amazing how blind the democratic party is to their own obstructionism. The senate cant pass a budget, and the white house wont even open the door but republicans are blamed when things dont get done. seriously, snap out of it and look in the mirror a bit.

  7. Well, regardless of who your particular flavour was in the election, it's all over and the fat lady is singing. Obama has it not only on Electoral college votes but also on the popular vote, by a narrow margin. The USA is split down the middle by the smallest amount, BUT take note Thailand. Tomorrow there will be NO protests in the United states, there will be no blocking of city centers, there will be no blocking of airports, there will be no burning down of cities and there will be no politician funded killing of its own citizens. There will be no 4 year period where disgruntled politicians do anything but file law suits against each other, lie to the electorate and place themselves above the constitution and the law. Good luck the USA, under the current financial situation it needed ANY party to be in for an 8 year term to try and sort it out. I am relieved it is all over. Back to work then!

probably the best comment on here. +1

  8. I dont like Obama, I dont think he did anything to earn re-election, and I am worried he will bury us in debt.

I'm sorry, I simply do not get what campaign you have been following. Romney said he wouldn't even balance the budget till his fourth year, which means the debt was going to grow under him anyway. Plus he was planning on adding (I'll be generous) $6 TRILLION to spending without actually saying how he was going to pay for it.

And you're worried about what Obama might do when he's specifically said he's going to raise taxes, cut military spending, and so on?

The Republicans have done everything they can to make Obama look bad, it's about time that they realise that this does not make them look good to the electorate.

I hope every voter, Republican and Democrat, watches every single one of these people like a hawk. Find out who's giving them money for their campaigns. Find out what legislation they are pushing or blocking and whether it helps their sponsors or the people that elected them.

And the self servers: Get rid!

There is a lot of talk about how the house is "do nothing" and that they will not work witth president, i would say it goes both ways.

if you want to know who is not cooperating, look to the senate. they have not passed a budget in FOUR years.

Obama's plan is no more thorough than Romney's.

  9. I dont like Obama, I dont think he did anything to earn re-election, and I am worried he will bury us in debt.

That being said, for my county's sake I wish him well in the next four years. I really hope that he can work with congress and get the things done that need to be done and not argue over ideology.

This is what I hope, but his record leads me to believe I will be disappointed.

  10. I have as much foreign policy experience as Romney ... coffee1.gif

    The Nation is right.

Exactly how much foreign policy experience did BHO have, before he got to the WH ?whistling.gif

The same as you, I would guess.

Incorrect. He had some, not a lot, in the U.S. senate.

he was in the senate for a whole 2 years, how much could he possibly have collected in that time?

  11. The politics if this paper are utterly bizarre. We have Obama being slammed by the right wing for his obama care and other social programs, and yet domestically the paper is stanch Thai democrat.

I know this is a regional piece but they could equally have written 10 reasons why not.

Can you think of 10 reasons why anyone would want Mitt the Moron to win apart from possibly these 4:

    1) I believe everything Fox News tells me.

    2) I am a racist redneck who thinks even though I am a 350 lb inbred I am better than all black people because I am white.

    3) I am a millionaire.

    4) I am Rupert Murdoch

I can't think of 10 so I doubt The Nation could.

Only need one reason, he isnt Obama

  12. Here's a thought....in a merciful few days the US election will be done and dusted.

What chance is there that the opposing parties, boosters and cheerleaders will say: "election is done, now let's focus on the real, material issues that will impact the long term future of this country and it's 300 million+ inhabitants"........

    Zero chance.

    for once we agree, Cheers!

  13. What I find disingenuous is the convienient amnesia that comes about from GOP'ers on debt when it wasn't an issue for the GOP 4 or 8 years ago.

I'm Republican and I remember when the Republicans lost control of Congress in the mid-term 2006 elections (btw - which means the Dems were in control for the two years before the collapse). When they lost, I said, "Good. They've been spending way too much. Maybe this loss will remind them that they are supposed to be the party against wild spending". Have they learned, really? Or are they just pretending now that they are in the minority? I'm afraid that once they get in the majority they will start their spending habits again. But that's just what I think might happen. All of us already KNOW what the Democrats have done and will continue to do - spend, spend, spend - and pay for it with $90 billion in additional taxes on the rich. Woo-hoo.

Agreed, my biggest hesitation is that Romney will go with the flow and keep on running up the credit card. Its hard for all politicians to stop spending other peoples money. There is no doubt in my mind that another term for Obama will put the debt well north of 20 trillion so I go with the gamble over the sure loss.

  14. This poll has no basis other than who the people who were polled expect to win. Obama is the incumbent, so no big surprise, but the polls are so close that this does not mean much.

I can certainly well understand that Romney partisans would want to cling to some hope.

The opera ain't over till the fat New Jersey governor sings ... coffee1.gif

The article is a last cling for hope. I would prefer to have more than 50% of the vote than 50% of the expectation....

  15. Yes, the storm crisis points out that BIG GOVERNMENT isn't so bad after all. This is a major ideological divide between the two parties.

George W. Bush gutted FEMA, unwisely placed it under Homeland Security, made a crony incompetent man it's head (the infamous "Brownie") and performed horribly poorly during Katrina.

Both Clinton and Obama reinforced FEMA and Obama is indeed performing masterfully during this current historically severe storm crisis and aftermath.

While it is true that Obama has supported a modest 3 percent cut in FEMA, Romney/Ryan budget has supported 40 percent severe cuts, sending the functions back to the states as block grants. That is totally irrational and dangerous. Only the FEDERAL government can efficiently be ready for major disasters happening any time, anywhere. There is no way that each state can do that, except maybe a few super big states, especially with a slashed federal budget, and or course they would have to raise states taxes anyway.

Americans now realize that man made global climate change is REAL and more and more are realizing the sad reality that these kinds of major climate related natural disasters ARE happening more frequently so are very likely to CONTINUE to occur more frequently. So big government like FEMA is more important than ever.

Historically with the Gallup poll, when such a commanding majority THINKS a particular side will win ... they win.

They also say when a challanger has been polling over 50% of the popular vote they win, and Romney has been above 50% for over two weeks now.

  16. The misses was very non confrontational when i met her and would be mad at me when i would take a stand in public. Then she let me do my thing for a while, and now after a few trips back to the USA and living with me for a few years she now "gets it" so to speak and is starting to put up with less garbage herself. I have also started letting more things go, so we have reached a happy median....
