  1. I used this company in Bangkok for something similar last week http://www.expresstranslationservice.com

I sent them scans of what I wanted translated, they gave a price of 350 per page plus 100 per extra certified copy (well worth doing). I sent them the money via bank transfer and we picked up the documents a couple of days later. Good service.

I appreciate the info. Were they located close to the Embassy though? Driving around in Bkk these days is a nightmare.

  2. I'm filing an I-130 in bkk for my Thai wife to immigrate to the USA.

I've read conflicting reports of her Birth Certificate and Marriage certificate and name change certificate needing to be translated into English from Thai.

Some have stated that it isn't required, and some have stated that it is required. I read the USCIS website which states, if the document is not in English or Thai, they must be translated. Technically that reads as the Thai docs should not need to be translated. But, as stated, others have said that they were required to go to the 2nd floor and use the service there for 500 baht/document. This also adds more time to being at the Consulate.

I would rather find someone reasonably priced to do it ahead of time and be prepared. Does anyone know of any outfits here in Pattaya?

    Thanks.

  3. If she knows English, do it in the USA. The only difficult part is them passing the written test on the computer if they don't know English.

If she's never driven, don't start her in Thailand. One week of driving here, and those learned techniques of how they enter and exit roads, cut in front of people, etc will get her killed in the USA, as well as a handful of tickets.

Also, as mentioned, getting a license here is very time consuming, and they must come back a year later to keep it renewed for another 5 years. Do you really want her driving in Thailand? If the answer is no, then simply do it in the USA where driving is actually needed, and safe for the most part.

Here, it isn't her, but the other drivers you need to worry about.

  4. None of the IRS details matter, this scam only works on people that are naive, as in all cons.

Most people know that if you get emails of winning the lottery and having to pay the tax upfront to collect, is a scam that has been going on forever. But, still, there are idiots falling for it because they don't know and are naive. There are dozens of variations of this scam........you win or get something good, but must pay some small fee upfront. Its a con, but suckers are born every minute and are naive and fall for it.

Anyone stupid enough to think the IRS would accept payments via debit cards or wire transfers are just plain naive and stupid. And those are always who fall victim to cons.

  5. Business is down across the board since the Army took control. Is it 2 million less tourists coming here now,,,,I think that is the number that I read? Well, that is a lot less egg eaters first of all, and everything is affected down the line. Trickle down economics......hurting a lot of the industries.

Anyway, it seems consumption is down for this reason among other reasons, and the farmers increased production......hmm, we have a problem.

And I want to know where I can buy these 3 baht eggs.

  6. This one is the best for asking what a word is called... นี่เรี่ยกว่าอะไร because the actual translation of this is "This called word what?" Yes, the put their words in a different order than us.

So if you are asking about a "word", that is the one to use.

But the others are ok to ask,,,,,what is this? Fine.... นี้อะไรครับ That is for a man to say. [ นี้อะไร ] that is the what is this? Then a man always puts ครับ at the end of everything to be polite.

  7. so one can get a ED visa to learn English in thailand ? not troll question, if so, i will pass immigration if they want to test me ... not native, but been speaking english for the last 30 years smile.png

so i go and speak with a french accent, or with a east-european kind of English ?

The new problem with the ED visas is that immigration is actually checking for your attendance at the schools. It's not as simple as speaking to them in English. They will come to visit you at your English classes un-announced, and if you are not there, visa will be cancelled.

I am in Thai classes now on an ED visa, and they have begun coming to our school every week checking the students.....ED visas are only going to work from now on for students that actually go to school.

  8. Went to Pattaya transport office by Regents school and paid the tax.

We inquired about changing the name there when I get the blue book released from the bank. They said "Mai Dai"....that is cannot for the non-thai speakers.

So it looks like I will be doing the Agent because I don't want to go to bkk.

    As I said

Yes, and I meant to thank you for your excellent advice, but forgot....so thanks!

  9. Thanks everyone for the advice. I did the Maxxis tires at the Deestone shop on Siam Country Club Soi. They were the best deal for what fit my truck.

Great service, took me in immediately, 3300 baht/tire, includes wheel alignment and balancing. In and finished in about 45 mins.

The owner even gave me his Kawasaki motorbike to go up the soi to the 7/11 and then to Kiss restaurant to get a bite while I waited. He offered without me asking. That is the kind of service very lacking in Thailand, and a breath of fresh air when you get it.

    Thanks for pointing me there!!!

  10. There have been numerous posts here a TV that have stated that the buyer must have a Certificate of Residency from either Immigration (cheap) or from one's Embassy (expensive) but that the seller does not need one

How about someone who has actually sold a vehicle here in Thailand reporting exactly what is the rule

JESUS! So much B/S over 1 simple question! Ive BOUGHT AND SOLD VEHICLES AT THE PATTAYA TRANSPORT OFFICE.

Each time we did it both of us turned up with a residents letter EACH from jomtien and passports. We then got as many photocopies as they wanted ON THAT PARTICULAR DAY as it varies, we went into inspection where the frame n engine numbers are verified and then paid the transfer fee. Once the paperwork is in and checked its a safe bet that the deal is done so thats the time to hand over the cash and go while the buyer waits for the updated book. End.

yes we know you can change names on PATTAYA registered cars in the Pattaya transport office but you CANNOT change names for a BKK Registered car there.

    OP Car has BKK Plates

Can I at least go to Pattaya transport office by regents school and pay the tax that is due now?

The blue book will be another two weeks I am guessing, and the tax expired last month. I must drive the truck this weekend to Surin, and along the way the cops have checkpoints about every 50 kms it seems.

  11. Give directasia.com a try, hassle free online quote system too..

I've been very pleased with them so far

Any experience with their claims service?

Their pricing looks good, but who is the insurance company underwriting this? Who handles their claims?

    Thanks

  12. I sold my car to another farang here in Pattaya last July. A couple weeks later I bought a new car from the Pattaya Mitsubishi dealer.

I am retired here on an annual retirement visa (extension) I was required to get 2 resident certificates from Jomtien Immigration. One was required as I was the seller of the car that was going to be transferred to another owner; the second resident certificate was required for me to purchase and register my new car.

The farang who bought my old car brought along a seller/buyer form and we both had to fill in our personal details and sign the form. So the buyer then took the car plus the completed form and resident certificates for each of us to the vehicle licensing department out behind the Regent International School to complete the transfer.

My old car was actually registered in Bangkok and had Bangkok plates on it. Both myself and the buyer of my old car reside in Pattaya. As far as I am aware the fact that the car was registered in another province was not an issue when the buyer made the transfer.

you should have signed 2 forms if you did not go to the office, a buy/sell form and a power of attorney form. do you know for a fact that the buyer was succesful in doing the name change at pattaya office, as a bkk reg vehicle, name change should be done in bkk.

I paid off the loan today for the truck at SCB branch in pattaya. They said they mail out the blue books from Bkk [that is where they hold all blue books] and it should come in 10 days.

The seller is making a 15k baht profit over what he owed on the loan. I am holding that until the book arrives and he helps me get the name changed, and he agreed. There was no other way to get the blue book released other than to pay off the loan. I now have the vehicle.

The plates and book say bkk. He said he used a local agent when he bought it. I've contacted that agent and they said to bring the book to them when it arrives and they will sort it or advise how to sort it. The seller is stating that he will get the Resident Certificate with me whenever I am ready to go, and has already signed sales contract and power of attorney for me.

The only curve ball is the bkk plates I guess. Will see when I get the book.

  13. Joe, thanks as always for your kindness, and I am still a bit confused.

Now, from what you wrote I DO get that the money needs to be in the bank for 60 days when first applying and 90 days after that.

    Ok.

But what you write next, confuses me:

You cannot apply for a retirement visa here in the country. You apply for an extension of stay based upon retirement at immigration.

    //

As a concrete example- I am on an ED visa that ends in August of this year.

You are saying that I have to leave the country in order to get a Retirement visa?

And when you say, "you apply for an extension of stay based upon retirement." I get lost....

If my current visa is up on August 15, then I need to have money in the bank no later than June 15 yes?

    And then what...?

I leave the country and apply for a retirement visa while in another country?

Sorry if I am being a pain!

    :-)

    cb

    Charlie,

Here is the part that you are not understanding. I know the following because I am doing the same thing as you.

I am on an ED now expiring in May. Our visas cannot be extended for retirement reasons. We must first leave the country and get a Non Immig O visa in Vientienne. Then re-enter on that, which gives us 90 days.

THEN, at the end of that 90 days, you go and get and Extension based upon retirement and provide all of the paperwork needed for that, of which, the money in the bank is one of them.

So you won't need the money in that account for a while, the last 2 months of your Non O visa.

Secondly, we can obtain a letter of income from our embassies in lieu of the 800k in an acct that basically states you make more than 65k baht per month in your home country. They accept either that or the bank deposits or a combination of both. Hope that helps.

  14. As a few people have stated, to the OP and salty14, Guarantors have NO rights, only risk.

They cannot get anything into their name except the potential debt if you don't pay the loan. It amazes me on this forum how many replies come into topics that are not related to the OP's question.

And as far as the bank on the blue book, as is the case in any country and any lending whether it be a house or a vehicle, the financing company "holds" the title as a "lienholder" until the loan is paid off. If it is not paid in full, they won't release the blue book to you. Their "lien" listed in the book would then be shown as paid off.

Your name would be on their as the owner, with the lenders name as a Lienholder against it. That is the way it works everywhere.

  15. You'll need workpermit or yellow housebook or certificate of address for yourself and likely for the seller as well.

I'm on an ED visa, not work permit. I already have a Thai Driver's license. Do I need to verify my address?

If so I have a 1 year lease in a house, would I need to get another verification of residency from immigration like I did when I got my drivers license?
