  1. The answer is YES, just read the posts, and you can say most cathegories. Most sad it's that they always find something to complaint about even when people have jumped from balconies or other fatal accidents. Then it's the way the police mention medications, diapers etc that bother them. There are of course a decent amount of people that appreciate Thailand and their wonderful people. I'm a older male with my fare share of illnesses and some days I don't want to see people due to severe pain, but when you walk outside or visit your local restaurant specially on theses bad days and are greeted with all these amazing smiles your pain melts away and you realize how lucky you are that are accepted in their country.

Is everything picture perfect here? Of course not, but at least you have a place where you feel safe, where people respect you and your handicaps and if you fall on the street or drop your cane someone will help you or pick up your cane with a smile. I went to Big C the other day and bought a little bit to much staff, took taxi home and the security guard in my condo building saw that I struggled and came and helped me up to my condo with the bags. My doorman in New York would do the same after I have to call him and he would expect no less then $20.00 tip for that, are occasions when the doorman have asked for $40.00 and don't even offer a smile. With this said, yes I think a lot of people here have nothing better to do then complain.

  2. I have used Thai Airways a lot in my life and always had good service and good food. Traveled a lot every year for work and used Thai as much as I could. When I stopped travel for work and settled down in New York I used Thai 4 times a year from JFK to BKK on their direct flight and we're always very happy. Then I travelled most in Premium Economy class which at that time was the best in the industry. When they cancelled the direct flight I started to fly with Cathay Pacific. Their service was ok in economy but since I travelled 3-4 times a year I had gold membership and was upgraded to business 12 out of 14 times and could not complain. Today I fly their Premium Economy but it's not the same service as Thai had. It also have changed the upgrades, have not been upgraded any of the 10 times I have travelled and that's because Cathay's premium economy is to expensive and only occupied by 10-12 paying passenger so they have around 20 seats to upgrade economy passengers with and that happens every flight. When I came here now in beginning of March it was at least 12 pax before me that with boarding they got changed boarding card and upgrade to premium. With that said Cathay have also stopped to serve welcome drink and hot towel in premium from Hong Kong to BKK. This have happened the last two times I used them. It seems that they are down grading their service. When I compare Thai and Cathay I find Thai in favor both food and service. I can mention that I have worked in the service industry for 40 years both airline and cruise line and used most airlines. Now when I live in New York it's difficult to find a good airline these days. I don't fly Singapore that's the only airline I have got food poisoning 2 times the last 10 years and also their stop over in Frankfurt is a waste of time. There is some other airlines that have premium economy that I haven't tried. I don't feel to spend $25.000 for 3 round trips in business with Cathay Pacific. I also find the article in both Thailand and US about the airlines have agreed to fix prices on trans pacific flights since 2000, though only ANA have pled guilty to fixing the prices on certain discounted tickets. There is a class action lawsuit going on about this.

  3. This is very sad every time it happens, and it's quit a few per year. Hope one day we will have a hot line and a support system in place for guys like this. He was seen with his suitcases at the bus stop and I can't stop wondering if he would have had a number to call and talk about his problems if that would have changed the outcome. I would not mind and I'm sure most of us here would not mind to support a hot line for expats. And also help with some money or shelter until they get the help they need or be able to return home. It's so sad that life have to end like this even if you have a terminal illness. A lot of guys here have problem with their girl or boy friends and should benefit of some kind of support.

  4. Are you guys from another planet. This rule have been in effect for years in Thailand. Big C and 7/11 haven't sold alcohol incl beer during this time for years. Small family stores are another story, they have sold it during this hours. As in a lot of countries incl US you can buy item during off hours or in packages that don't have the real description. Poppers for example is illegal to sell in us but are sold in all kind of facilities incl corner stores in Queens NY as nail polish remover or cd-rom cleaners.

Yes it will always be places to buy your beer etc.

  5. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 2009 at 53. Had a Gleason score of 6. Due to my age they decided that I could not wait. I had radiation 36 days and radioactive seed implants the day after I finished radiation. I had over radiation and are still suffering daily since my urinary system was destroyed. My treatment was recommended and done by one of the best physician in NY. I suggest that you consult a doctor in Thailand they have advanced surgery technology there and well educated physicians that can monitor your PSA. If you are older watchful waiting is a good option but be consistent with the testing so you can take action if the PSA raises so the tumor don't spread outside the prostate.

  6. Most airlines today have 3-4-3 in economy class incl Cathay. In Premium Economy it's 2-4-2. Cathay from US to BKK from $900.00 Eco. $2,272.00 Premium & 7,000.00 business. If you fly 2 times per year in Eco or Premium Eco and sign up for Marco Polo or Asia Miles you will have Silver status (30.000 miles) and can use there Business class lounge before in us and in HKG during transfer. Business Class on Finnair from US starts at $5,000.00 depend on when you book. You can get a business from US to BKK from $3,000.00 with Aeroflot or a mix of airlines. You may not be able to receive miles in these flights.

  7. The Surcharge is US$1.54. In my opinion its a very small amount and it may help keep the drivers waiting at the airports. I think the bigger problem is that the drivers refuse to turn on the meter and are always fighting for a flat higher fee. I live in New York and every time u take a taxi here it's a surcharge that it's much higher then the ฿50.00. And maybe if the drivers get the suggested higher surcharge of ฿100.00 they will follow the meter rules and the total amount will be lower then the flat fee they are demanding now.

  8. Guys, it's time to leave the drink at the table and read about the ban, all of you are bashing Thai Airways like they are a second class airline. They are a decent one. If you read about the ban it say IATA are behind this ban. I came here with Cathay Pacific from the US and they also have the ban for this kind of batteries. With check in at airport they show you the laminated poster and ask if u have any of these items in your check in luggage. Also on the website when you do your check in there you have to check off that you have understood this ban of external batteries. It have been like this for a while but it was stepped up after the new Islamic movement. So please don't blame Thai Airways for this.

  9. The following message is poster on their web site

With reference to the recent news about the Thai immigration bureau clamping down on visa runners, the consulate of Thailand in New York wishes to clarify that such measures are strictly implemented to prevent visa runners who abuse the visa exemption scheme from working illegally in Thailand

The purpose of this scheme is for tourism only. At percent, once a visa runner case has been found, the immigration bureau would take measures of warning and giving advise for proper visas. However from 12 August 2014 onwards the Thai immigration bureau will commence prohibiting visa runners from entering into Thailand. The consulate-General of Thailand therefor advises that those who wish to enter into Thailand for other purposes obtain the appropriate visas prior to arrival.

  10. Guys, this was an accident and with only 14 injured, I think it's to much notice for nothing. In the Asiana accident a while back there was a pilot error and one person killed by the fire trucks. I have used Thai for many years until their direct flight from NY to BKK was cancelled. I don't believe they have that bad safety on board so they need all this noice.

Another thing I read a lot here are all the complaints about Thailand and Thai banks etc. a couple of days ago it was about Bangkok Bank and eBay I can just say that there are also us banks debit card that can't be used everywhere one example are Chase debit card with Visa logo are not accepted by Western Union.

  11. Option Two: Direct Deposit to a Special Account at Bangkok Bank

If you do not have a U.S. bank account, you can still get Direct Deposit in Thailand. Bangkok Bank will accept U.S. government Direct Deposit, but you must set up a special account that has certain restrictions to safeguard your money. Heres how it works:

    1. Go to a Bangkok Bank branch and ask to open a Direct Deposit Account. You will need:

    your passport

    your Social Security card

blank Form SF-1199; you can get this form online from the U.S. Treasury at:

    http://www.fms.treas.gov/eft/1199a.pdf

a small amount of money to open the account

Be sure to tell bank staff that the account will be for receiving a U.S. government pension only. Bank staff will help you fill out the necessary forms, including an application for the banks Direct Deposit service. Please read the applications terms and conditions carefully. Be sure to note the fees and the restrictions on the account.

    2. It might take several months for Direct Deposit to begin. During that time, you will continue to receive your check by whatever method you use currently.

    3. Once Direct Deposit begins, Bangkok Bank charges a transaction fee for each Direct Deposit. Your money will be available in Thai baht at any Bangkok Bank branch, but you must go in person with your bank book and passport. You cannot use an ATM card to withdraw funds from these special accounts, nor set up automatic transfers or payments from these special accounts. However, when you go to the bank, you can transfer money to a different account that does allow ATM use.
