You better go back and have a look before questioning other peoples reading skills mate, the first mention of any thrill came from you. The member saying 'there's nothing wrong with a 'cheap thrill' was simply replying to your post.

Thrill? Sure you're not 14? Apart from election days and major religious holidays, it's commonly accepted in this country that mom and pop shops sell alcohol from 2pm to 5pm. It's not like anyone are wrapping up alcohol in newspaper etc. from 2pm to 5pm.

People buy alcohol between 2pm and 5pm because they want alcohol, I have yet to meet anyone who goes to buy alcohol at those hours because it makes them feel like a slippers-wearing version of James Bond.

And have actually quite a good time with my partner ... we talk a lot and follow the news every second, and she really tells me some things

Nice to hear about your relations with your partner being OK, but just remember how many abusive parents who are now at home with their families ... all over the world. The isolation is going to have unknown consequences for children all over the world.

To add to that, corruption issues is nothing compared to what will probably be bound to come. A child dies from hunger every 15 second (close to 6k children every day), just imagine the damage a worldwide recession or post world war 2-like recession will cause. And that's on top of the unreported (no-one to report them at the moment) child abuse cases out there.

I agree with wearing masks, and many other measures that should be implemented. But at some point, there has to be a risk vs. reward evaluation. Most countries has actually implemented stricter restrictions and regulations, than what their national Health Organizations recommended.

This will all come at a very dear price, and I think few will know how dear that price is until years has passed.

And that's not even touching the world economy as a whole, the unemployment rates will be staggering if things don't go back to normal sooner rather than later. I'm very scared, but the virus isn't the reason why. I will still follow the recommendations, though, I want to do my part. But the wheels of society stopping to spin is a very scary scenario.

Definitely, and a big worry the way I see it is all the people who came 'home' from Bangkok, to villages where hand hygiene is almost non-existent. In the villages, some times you would have a better chance to win in the lottery than finding soap in or even nearby a bathroom.

Which, let's not forget, was the WHO recommendation at the time. If they were wrong, and had to change their stance, I think it's fair to give expats in Thailand a little break. You can only rely on the information you have available, and WHO is a pretty credible source on health issues - but they may have gotten it wrong this time. The latter doesn't change the fact that the WHO, at any given time, should be a reliable source of information on worldwide health issues. And the fact that the WHO changed their advise in this matter certainly isn't a 'Haha, I was right and you were wrong' kind of moment - in most situations, it would be a good idea to follow their advise.

And this is definitely not the time to score cheap debating points.

I'd be inclined to agree, if not for the fact that people gets short jail sentences or even pardoned for heinous crimes in this country.

As a private person, I would reckon? Now, imagine being an SME, exporting goods and/or services for quite some years. Quite a few of us are at the brink, and a lot will go under if the baht strengthens further. We really would have already, had we not expanded our business volume and improved out business model after taking out (private) loans to keep floating.

That's a lot of workers being out of a job, and the more the baht strengthens the more the people will suffer. Then you have the tourism sector to boot. Won't make any predictions, I'm not that versed in the world of economics, but there's no doubt the massive strength of the THB over many years will cause huge problems.

I also have reports of local businesses, catering to Thai people, are struggling massively due to a lack of customers, but I can't really verify that or know exactly how bad it is.

All in all, I personally can't see how it's at all sustainable or good for the Thai people. But that's just my opinion.

Pretty sure that tomorrow they'll spin this into Bangkok and the surrounding areas becoming the new Venice, making the baht even stronger.

I used to have a maid, chef, driver and several other staff I really didn't need, for work permit purposes, before we came around to getting staff that we could actually make money from in my company. Anyone can clean, so why not look for a chef/cook (instead of a maid) and task him/her with cleaning the house as well? That way, you can be quite sure the person will not even learn to cook western food, but actually appreciate it. That's my experience, anyway. Our chef/cook was very happy to learn how to make western food. He did all sorts of other stuff as well.
