You might want to read the whole thread before misrepresenting what I said. Assuming your reading and comprehension skills are at least equivalent to that of a 14 year old, you would see that I was responding to another poster who said they are OK with these stupid laws because they get a thrill out of breaking them. Now, go read it again - slowly. Good lad.

You better go back and have a look before questioning other peoples reading skills mate, the first mention of any thrill came from you. The member saying 'there's nothing wrong with a 'cheap thrill' was simply replying to your post.

Personally I'd rather they removed the stupid laws, and enforced the serious ones rather than getting some cheap thrill out of "getting away with it" or "beating the system" by buying a beer at a Mom and Pop shop at 3pm. But then, I'm not 14 anymore.

Thrill? Sure you're not 14? Apart from election days and major religious holidays, it's commonly accepted in this country that mom and pop shops sell alcohol from 2pm to 5pm. It's not like anyone are wrapping up alcohol in newspaper etc. from 2pm to 5pm.

People buy alcohol between 2pm and 5pm because they want alcohol, I have yet to meet anyone who goes to buy alcohol at those hours because it makes them feel like a slippers-wearing version of James Bond.

Using the word SNITCH certainly loads the question.........how about ......

As a fine, upstanding citizen who feels we should all obey the accepted laws of our country, do you think you should inform the authorities of any wrong doing?

    Accepted by who?

    Fully agree with you.

But that doesn't make cash in the Bib's pockets.

I've been in some ok'ish isolation for the past 2 weeks ... just go out for some food and do the necessary.

Not a problem. I will not make myself a target here or do anything stubborn or ignorant.

And have actually quite a good time with my partner ... we talk a lot and follow the news every second, and she really tells me some things

about her 'beloved Thailand' ... if I would repeat this here on TVF what she tells me, it would get deleted on here as inappropriate.

People are pulling together, I don't really see the BIB exploiting this too much.

Nice to hear about your relations with your partner being OK, but just remember how many abusive parents who are now at home with their families ... all over the world. The isolation is going to have unknown consequences for children all over the world.

To add to that, corruption issues is nothing compared to what will probably be bound to come. A child dies from hunger every 15 second (close to 6k children every day), just imagine the damage a worldwide recession or post world war 2-like recession will cause. And that's on top of the unreported (no-one to report them at the moment) child abuse cases out there.

I agree with wearing masks, and many other measures that should be implemented. But at some point, there has to be a risk vs. reward evaluation. Most countries has actually implemented stricter restrictions and regulations, than what their national Health Organizations recommended.

This will all come at a very dear price, and I think few will know how dear that price is until years has passed.

And that's not even touching the world economy as a whole, the unemployment rates will be staggering if things don't go back to normal sooner rather than later. I'm very scared, but the virus isn't the reason why. I will still follow the recommendations, though, I want to do my part. But the wheels of society stopping to spin is a very scary scenario.

Yes a good case has been made by now for wearing masks. But people forget the downsides of the mask thing. People are NOT social distancing very much here! It's my impression Thais are doing that less than westerners. Social distancing is MORE IMPORTANT than masks. Too many people incorrectly think the masks protect themselves (they don't, they protect others) and if they wear a mask they're covered and don't need to bother with social distancing. Not to mention hand washing which is another subject.

Definitely, and a big worry the way I see it is all the people who came 'home' from Bangkok, to villages where hand hygiene is almost non-existent. In the villages, some times you would have a better chance to win in the lottery than finding soap in or even nearby a bathroom.

"nobody is disputing wearing a mask" ... yes, they did ... all the time.

Which, let's not forget, was the WHO recommendation at the time. If they were wrong, and had to change their stance, I think it's fair to give expats in Thailand a little break. You can only rely on the information you have available, and WHO is a pretty credible source on health issues - but they may have gotten it wrong this time. The latter doesn't change the fact that the WHO, at any given time, should be a reliable source of information on worldwide health issues. And the fact that the WHO changed their advise in this matter certainly isn't a 'Haha, I was right and you were wrong' kind of moment - in most situations, it would be a good idea to follow their advise.

And this is definitely not the time to score cheap debating points.

For long time, many foreigners were arguing that it's useless to wear a mask, hence didn't do it.

Disregarding the fact that they are in Thailand, with different rules and views in play.

Now it's Thai style cash in ... 20k baht fine for foreigners. Games open to start.

Just don't wear one tomorrow and meet the next cop .. then you might understand the last two sentences.

Thank you for the explanation, the first post would have been understood perfectly had it been more eloquent. Especially the part about masks don't working.

Anybody who spends more than 2 weeks in Thailand knows that ????

Just too predictable this would happen, now it's 'cashing' ... Thai style.

But but ... mask don't work, that's what professionals say ... sorry Mistuur ... 20k Baht pls.

Well, apparently he didn't. Not really sure what you mean by your latter two sentences, though.

I would own a gun for self defence if the law hadn't changed in 2017. I meet the criteria for legally owning a gun apart from not being Thai. I still want to defend myself if the case arises. I've felt this way after being physically threaten a few months ago. I'm not pro-gun but if the Thai man in the street can legally own one for protection I'd like to too.

Get a sports bow. Most shooters with a handgun will not have the know-how nor keep their cool well enough to aim properly, and a sports bow is not illegal. Hone your skills with one of those, and I'd favor you over some lunatic with a handgun. Besides, they're silent and no-one can see a flash.

  10. I used to have a maid, chef, driver and several other staff I really didn't need, for work permit purposes, before we came around to getting staff that we could actually make money from in my company. Anyone can clean, so why not look for a chef/cook (instead of a maid) and task him/her with cleaning the house as well? That way, you can be quite sure the person will not even learn to cook western food, but actually appreciate it. That's my experience, anyway. Our chef/cook was very happy to learn how to make western food. He did all sorts of other stuff as well.

I've had a Yellow Tabien Baan and a Pink ID card for a few years now. At the moment it's purely a voluntary option to apply for one and, under the present rules, I agree with Ubonjoe that a lot of people would find it very difficult, if not impossible, to obtain them because it requires the permission of the owner of your residence to apply. The yellow book in it's current form, with the possible addition of an English translation would be OK but the pink ID  would need to be totally revamped and updateable to include current 'visa status' etc to completely replace the passport. But you never know, things move slowly in Thailand so, with a change in the current rules ................ who knows.

I use them in the same way a Thai National use their's and find them very useful and much more convenient than messing around with taking my passport and applying for a residence certificate  etc every time I need official documentation.

While in the earlier days they weren't always recognised everywhere most places (such as banks, driving licence renewals, hospital registration, sim card registration, Tax ID number, buying/selling a car, etc, etc to name just a few) now recognise and accept them straight away.

With the endless moans and complaints by members here on TV concerning things like TM30's, 90 day reports, etc, etc, some kind of official ID for 'long stay' (and yes I know it's only a year at a time) foreigners to use in a similar form to Thai National's ID system would both solve a lot of problems and make life a lot easier for those of us living in Thailand.

But that would need all of us to be positive about a change and not to complain about negative 'big brother' reasons for not complying. There's too many negative expats on TV. But then again, as I said, you never know .................................

Negative posters on TV? You must be jesting! See below for my counter argument:

It's actually is a non-issue and nothing to worry about.  My first extension was based on marriage.  Immigration showed up on a day we weren't there.  They talked to the neighbors and the village head.  Considering I'm the only farang currently living in a 35 km long rural valley, I don't think it was difficult to determine that I lived there with my wife.  You could just about ask any of the 150 or so villagers in the area.  The last time I saw immigration was after the Erawan Center bomb attack.  I think every farang in Thailand got a visit.  However it was also one of those time where their racial profiling was about 100% off target.  Given our dogs greeted them at the gate with an unwelcome reception they didn't bother to come in. And the visitation party include a local cop who knows me, so I'm assuming they were where just putting a checkmark in the checkbox.  I changed over to a retirement extension this year simply because I got tired to filing out so much paperwork.  I haven't seen any immigration in our neighborhood and don't really expect to consider the I/Os at immigration know both my wife and myself on sight.
So, nothing much to worry about.  Just a formality.

I had them come visit once in 11 years, and I am a business owner as well. They did seem eager to know about that part, I think mostly out of curiosity or politeness, but it was not the reason they were there. There were five of them, they sat down and had a bottle of water each, which we offered them voluntarily, they were very polite and friendly and they didn't ask for anything at all and went back to the office (or wherever they went). I'd normally be more worried about police than immigration, as long as everything is in order the Immigration officers will not ever be a problem. Police more often than not won't be either, but some of them walk around thinking they own the place/village they live in.

I'd say my encounter with Immigration officers coming to my house was an overall pleasant experience.
