  1. Mario do you know if I have to go to the labour office first?

If you currently have a WP you go to the labour office first, with a letter from the organization stating your volunteering ended on that day. Next you go to immigration to cancel your extension of stay, if on an extension of stay. And at that time you apply for an extension based on your study and see if they accept it. if not, you have to leave Thailand the same day or apply for an extra 7 days to give you some more time (for 1,900 baht).

Just thinking ahead as the time is drawing near for my Ed Visa application to be processed in Chiang Mai. If they don't accept my application for an extension of stay based on study and I have to leave the country, do I have to apply for a 60 day tourist visa at, say, Vientiane or Phnom Penh or do I just go across the border and get the 30 days visa-exempt as a UK citizen?

Once again, thank you in advance for any advice. I'm devizing plans A & B and probably even a plan C if need be!

  2. My government 3rd party insurance card / document (the one you get at the Dept. of Transport) has gone missing and so seemingly has the copy that was made of it. It's still valid until next March.

Is it possible to take my Green Book to the Dept. of Transport to get a replacement?

    Many thanks in advance.

  3. OK just to update.. Bangkok Bank couldn't do an over-the-counter withdrawal because of the daily limit on my debit card so I called the bank in the UK and they said they were unable to up my limit even for a short period of time even though the money's in the account.

Gave the seller the option of doing a SWIFT transfer but he was concerned about any potential delay there may be in the transaction so I'm back to drawing out daily amounts from the ATM and giving to the seller.

Hopefully, I won't need another bike for a few more years!

  4. I want to buy a 2nd hand motorbike next week and would like to know the easiest way to pay for it. My money's in a UK account (I don't have a Thai account yet) and I want to avoid drawing out lumps from the ATM every few days. Is it possible for me to transfer money online from my UK account to a Thai account easily?

Apologies in advance but I've never done a transaction like this before. Any advice appreciated.

    Dan

  5. CELTA is very intensive but it is the most widely-recognised certificate for teaching adults. It will give you a good grounding, especially for teaching grammar confidently. I did mine in a month but there was also a 6-month option (back in the UK) though my local college which, with hindsight, would've been less stressful.

  6. FWIW I saw a dead banded krait in the road near Mae Ai last week.

Anyway, here's my latest snake encounter: I park my motorbike down the side of the house and have to do a u-turn near the agroforest to face the direction of the farm exit. Anyway, as I did the u-turn, I set my foot down and very nearly trod on a very large black snake. Of course, I totally freaked out before realizing it had a very significant head injury and was probably dead so, still somewhat shaken, I continued on my way. However, curiosity then got the better of me and in my quest to identify the said snake, went back to photograph it. Returning to it, still sat on the bike, I got my phone out and I'd just got it into focus when it suddenly sprang into life, writhing wildly in the undergrowth, prompting the fastest ever acceleration by a Honda Dream. I have thankfully now calmed down.

The Cobra still gets style points

So the Banded Krait looks like this? Good info to have. Run like hell !!

During the Vietnam war we referred to it as the 'Two-Stepper'. A bit of an exaggeration of course but implied after getting bit you will die after taking two steps.

The Banded Krait is active at NIGHT and very aggressive, however in daytime it is very docile which explains why the guy above can handle them

  7. You need to be sure the paperwork you have is for an extension of stay not a visa. School should know the difference. You should not need to go out for a visa. Just be sure you have the correct paperwork to get the extension. If you did go for a visa you would get a single entry non-ed visa.

Thanks for your quick response Joe.

IIRC the paperwork the school is providing is for Ed Visa application not an extension so I have just emailed them to see if they are able to send me extension of stay paperwork.

The organisation I've been volunteering with are allowing me the services of their lawyer to process the Ed Visa but he says that getting an Ed Visa after having been on a WP and 'O' visa is not going to be possible to process without extending the WP as well but I only want the Ed Visa as I'll no longer be doing the volunteering.

I'm already on the degree course and attend face-to-face classes in Bangkok in October. My WP runs out at the end of November so I have time.

Does this mean that should I have to leave Thailand for say Laos that day, that I should apply for the Ed Visa there or should I get a tourist visa and then have that converted to my Ed Visa in Bangkok?

Although I don't wear sandals, what is wrong with this?

Socks and sandals are universally ridiculed around the world. However, you will likely not find a more comfortable combination of footwear in the universe. I am a confessed habitual sock and sandal wearer, I can't help it. Although, I have since graduated to "skele-toes" which are even more hideous than socks and sandals, but I love them like family and I simply can't stop wearing thembiggrin.png

Don't worry, you can beat this; just take things a day at a time and you will be fine. It won't be long before normal footwear is resumed.

  10. Wrong, it is required.

I just joined a Thai language course here in Samui at a place called Thai Language Solutions.

I solicited ALL the schools here and they all asked for a bank statement.

Do your homework and you'll see for yourself.

50,000 baht is required, by the gov.

Sorry folks, but this is going by first hand experience.

They just wanted to see how full the ATM was.

So,is that 50k per month income they want to see or is there a minimum amount you need in your bank account upon application?

  11. Dear all,

I need a room for just a month during October; am a student and so am looking for somewhere in the 4.5k - 5.5k range all-in, prefererably with air-con. Thanon Samsen area would be ideal as it's on the bus route for college. Need to be back down to Bangkok again next year as well so it would be great if I could find a place that I can return to.

    Any advice greatly apprecaited.

    Regards,

    Dan
