  1. Disclaimer: I have no real skin in this game as I'm on a new non-O multi. I'm just curious.

Are you staying on back to back 90 day entries from a Multi visa? In this case it is clearly an abuse of the rules and not how this visa is intended to be used. If the crackdown continues, these visas may well become the next target after NON-EDs

I'm married to a Thai, have been for 14 years. If they start hassling spouses who want to live with their loved ones and their families in their home country....well that's an entirely different ball of wax. And would be ridiculous.

  2. I understand there's a new sheriff in town, and "rules is rules" and whatnot, but what is the actual motivation for the crackdown?

It certainly doesn't help the country financially. Was there a growing disdain for a certain type of farang that boiled over?, farangs in general?, is it just chest-thumping and trying to look productive?

  3. How much time must be remaining on my current extension of stay in order to process a new multi-entry non-O at Savanakhet?

    None

Your extension will end as soon as you leave the country.

The border guards at the Savannkhet crossing were telling me I couldn't get a new visa until the day my current extension "Thai Wife" stamp expires, which is July 16th.

I have a feeling this is becoming the disaster trip that I knew it would.

  4. I can’t get the Thai Consulate in Savannakhet website to work. Can anyone confirm if they are open on July 8, 9, 10, 11? (I know 11th is Asalha Bucha, just wanted to confirm).

    *******

Also, can anyone confirm if the following travel plan makes sense time-wise?:

    Day 1:

Air Asia – DMK to Nakhon Phanom (15:10-16:20)

Van/bus - Nakhon Phanom to Mukdahan

    Stay one night in Mukdahan

    Day 2:

Cross border, Submit visa application, Stay one night in Savannaket

    Day 3:

    Pick up visa

    Van/bus Mukdahan to Ubon

Air Asia – Ubon to DMK (19:25-20:30)

***Will I have enough time to get from Mukdahan to my 19:25 flight in Ubon after I pick up my visa?

    Thanks a lot.

They will only be closed on the 11th of July.

You could make it to Savannakhet on day one. The bridge does not close until 10. That would eliminate the early morning dash across the bridge on day 2.

You will have plenty of time to make you flight to Ubon by van or bus. You will arrive at the main bus station and can get a meter taxi to take you to the airport. About 70 or 80 baht.

I landed in Nakhon Phanom about 4:30pm, got the Air Asia van about 4:45 no problem, got to the Savannakhet border crossing about 6:15...

...and they told me farang cannot get visa after 6pm and that I have to come back in the morning.

I am now sitting in a 350Baht hotel room in Mukdahan.

    So FYI.

  5. The marriage certificate that I need to show is Kor Ro 22, right?

The marriage certificate is a Kor Ror 3. A Kor Ror 22 is the marriage registry for a marriage done outside to Thailand.

We only got married outside Thailand, so we must have only used KR22 for my previous non-O extensions, right? (I'm unfamiliar bc my school did everything for me).

Bottom line: if I go with KR22 only, will I get a non-O multiple entry?

You need your non Thai marriage certificate to get a non-o. You can also submit a Kor Ror 22 with it. When you did the extension you would of needed both of them. The Kor Ror 22 only proves that your marriage has been registered.

    understood, thx.

Booked my flights (to Nakhon Phanom + AirAsia transfer to Mukdahan; Ubon back to BKK)...

Does anyone have experience with the AirAisa ground transport from Nakhon Phanom to Mukdahan? Where does one get transport from Mukdahan over into Savannakhet?

Also, can anyone rec a decent hotel in Savannakhet besides Daosavahn and Savan Vegas?

    Thanks!

They should let you off the at the bridge on the way to Mukdahan. And then you can get the bus at the bridge to Savannakhet .

If not you can get the bus to Savannakhet at the bus station in Mukdahan.

Sorry I cannot give you any info on hotels.

    Thanks Joe.

    I stayed at Savanbanhao Hotel email: [email protected] tel: (856 - 41) 212202 fax: (856 - 41) 212944.

It's an Asian style hotel and Tour Company. They do get booked up so it's best to reserve. Not at all fancy but OK. Plenty of westerners stay there.

The Thai Consulate, and good restaurants are all within walking distance. The Thai consulate is about a 20-40 minute leisurely walk away. There is/was a lively Karaoke across the street. You can rent a bicycle from the guest house across the street and one block to the right.

    There are reviews on tripadvisor.com

Excellent, thx for the info. Just booked it.

Stupid question: do I need to change Baht or will hotels, restaurants, tuk tuks etc accept Baht in Savannakhet?

    Thanks again.

  10. The multiple non-O from Savanakhet has one other advantage. With a non-O visa you wil not have to leave the country if you find work, as labour will issue a work permit on it.

With an ED-visa you will need to leave the country to get a non-B visa before a work permit will be issued.

Would the consulate in Savanakhet raise an eyebrow if I'm attempting to get a new non-O visa as opposed to another extension of stay?

No they would not. You will not be the first person to of done it.

How much time must be remaining on my current extension of stay in order to process a new multi-entry non-O at Savanakhet?

Thanks for the information Joe and Mario.

What other places can I get the non-O besides Savanakhet? Maybe I'd make it a vacation if I could go to Vientienne or KL, etc.

Also, in a previous post you said I could "get a 60 day extension without needing to show financial proof".....you mean my current extension of stay that expires July 16th can be extended for 60 days (while I sort out my new non-O Visa)?

    Thx.

    Savannakhet is your only choice.

You can get a 60 day extension of your current extension without a problem..

Thanks again. Last question: which form's needed to extend my extension for 60 days?

  14. Thanks for the replies, but I think a new work permit is not forthcoming, which is why I want to switch to an ED Visa.

Any advice on how to transition from a non-O Extension to an ED Visa? My extension expires July 16th...

You would need to enroll in a school and get the documents required from them to change your current extension to one for attending school.

You might want to consider getting a multiple entry non-o visa in Savannakhet Laos. You would have to make border runs every 90 days but it might be better than attending a language school and possibly having to get a new extension every 90 days.

Thanks Joe. I would like to do everything in my power to avoid border runs.

Can you please clarify something?...If I enroll in a language school, they would change my extension, not give me a brand new ED visa?

And in either case, what did you mean about having to get a new extension every 90 days? Wouldn't either a new visa or an extension be good for 1 year?

what has a wp got to do with an extension based on marriage, do not need a wp for an extension

In order to show 40,000B income I need a job that is legit, which requires a WP.

  16. My non-O (based on marriage) is expiring July 16th. However, I officially ended my above-board employment recently and will not have a new work permit in time for the next 1-year extension (would have been the third one). I do not have 800K Baht, either.

And I kind of want to take some time off from work, but remain in TH with my wife. I am considering getting an ED Visa and taking Thai lessons. However, I believe that visa might take a month or more to process, so I’d be cutting it close if I pursued that option now.

    Should I:

Go for the ED now and hope it is done before my extension runs out? (And just make the necessary border run on 16th July if the ED Visa is still pending?)

Get a 60-day Tourist Visa first (on 16th July), then apply for the ED?

(Can I even apply for a new type of Visa whilst my old Visa’s extension is still valid?)

Kind of confused on the best way to have a smooth transition with the fewest possible trips outside of Thailand.

    Thanks!

  17. Do extensions of stay work the same way as visas do in terms of squeezing out an extra 90 days?

I have “Thai Wife” non-O extension stamp through 16 Jul 2014 and a multiple re-entry stamp good through same date.

If I go out of TH and return on, say, 15 Jul 2014 will I get 90-days added upon re-entry? If so, will that mean my extension of stay is “extended” until ~15 Oct 2014?

    Thanks in advance…

Hopefully the Chinese will export this attitude towards idiot drivers - and Thais will make public their contempt and demand appropriate action.

I am reminded of an advertisment for Fiat cars which boasted 'designed by artists, built by computers' to which somebody added 'driven by idiots'.

What's the difference between a porcupine and a Ferrari?

With the former, the pricks are on the outside.
