  1. I'm on a Mac with Firefox 2.0.0.4 and suddenly beginning yesterday, the toolbars above the posting editor fail to work. I only get a toolbar when I use "Fast Reply," but none of the other options, and the items on the toolbar are non-functional. No smilies. And "My Assistant" is inoperative. In the error console on Firefox I have a ton of errors, all with Thai Visa on them. For example:

Error: missing ) after argument list

And on and on. What's happening?

  2. Actually, I don't see what you're all on about. Obviously they can't waive the taxes and fees. Someone has to pay them and they're not going to do so on your behalf. And there's obviously a quota of tickets per flight which are available at this price, so if you don't book far ahead you can't get the lowest price. This is normal for low cost airlines the world over. For instance in Germany, Air Berlin offers its lowest cost domestic flight at 29 euros - that's one euro for the ticket and 28 euros for the fees and taxes. Still a phenomenal price if you book in time to get one of those tickets.

  3. I take a statin drug - atorvastatin, which trades under the names Lipitor or Sortis - one of the most-commonly prescribed drugs in the world, the 3rd generation of this class of drugs for familial hyperlipidemia - congenitally high cholesterol. It's helped to reduce my cholesterol levels from life-threatening to low-normal. Previously I took Zocor (simvastatin) which is now off-patent which makes it cheaper if that's a factor, but Lipitor is a newer generation and more effective.

In the last few years I also started to take ezetimibe (Zetia, Ezetrol) a newer class of drugs which hinders reabsorption of cholesterol by the bowels after it's been ejected by the liver. That particularly affects LDL "bad" cholesterol and in my case has helped change the ratio of my HDL "good" cholesterol to LDL from borderline to textbook perfect. None of these drugs are effective alone. You also still have to watch your diet, keep your weight down and exercise. And only a doctor can prescribe which drug you should be using, in what dosage, and closely monitor your blood and liver values.

Usually doctors will try for several months to get the cholesterol values in order with diet and exercise before prescribing any medication.

  4. If you only have 2 weeks I wouldn't waste any time transiting between coasts. Koh Samui is a very-developed East Coast tourist island. Krabi is a quite-developed West Coast tourist area. If you stay on the Andaman coast, why not combine Krabi with a nearby less-developed island like Koh Jum or Koh Yao Noi? We spent some time on Koh Jum in March and felt like we'd landed in paradise. Here are some links to get you started: Andaman Island Hopping, Koh Jum Online, Your Krabi.

  5. There just aren't any bands that have done things like the Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Marilyn Manson, The Cure, Placebo, etc.
To me, all these bands you mention sound just boring and flat. I'd rather listen to a good morlam or lukthung performer any day. Or, failing that, some live blues at Ad Here the 13th or Tokyo Joes.
  6. Girl X, The Prasuri Guesthouse (85/1 Soi Prasuri, Dinso Road, Phra Nakhon (Tel: 0 2280 1428 Fax: 0 2280 1428)) near Democracy Monument has wifi that they charge 20 or 40 baht an hour for. I discovered that once you get the login, you can use it in your room, even though they say it doesn't reach there. They have A/C rooms for 400 baht.

  7. No, I think you miss the point. The point is, the DISPATCHERS are colluding with the drivers to set this artificial flat rate of 450 baht to take advantage of newbies who don't know any better or people tired from a long flight who can't be bothered to resist. It seems like a small amount, 100 -150 baht extra on average, but think of how much that makes when you do it to 2000 or more people a day, 7 days a week. And I bet the drivers themselves don't see much of the take. Up to about March this year, this was one of the basically clean & transparent systems that you could recommend to a newbie who was afraid of getting ripped off. Obviously no more.

  8. Young people in Thailand seem to be getting much taller. When I first started coming to Thailand I seemed to tower over everybody with my 172 cm/5'7" (modest height in the west). Now I've been noticing many teenagers and 20-somethings -both boys and girls - much taller than me. And also many Thai young people seem to be more solidly built than they used to be. I don't mean the overweight ones, which are increasing in number as well, of course.

  9. It's not actually that much of a backwater. Lots going on in Rangsit, including a big shopping centre (Future Park, one of Asia's largest malls), universities, institutes etc. It's not too far from the old Don Muang airport, so the cluster of hotels there might be the solution. Maybe the TK Palace is what you're looking for. It's in the right price ballpark, anyway. Rangsit would be about 15 min. away by taxi. Possibly We-Train International House could meet your needs. It used to be recommended for budget travellers needing a cheap room near Don Muang Airport, but it's also not too far to Rangsit. If you're looking for longer-term accommodation, there are plenty of habitable budget apartments and studios in Rangsit and neighbouring Laksi in the 8000 baht per month price range.

    More here on Future Park.

  10. As near as I can find out, Nok Air doesn't do any interlining of baggage, so scratch my earlier suggestion.

As for Trang, it's a really interesting place. The city is an old Hokkien Chinese mercantile town and there are a lot of old shop houses with covered arcades. They have this big coffee culture there, and I had some of the best breakfast dim sum I've ever had (cheap too) at a popular place a bit out of the centre of town. I found it to be a friendly laid back kind of town. Not many tourists, except those passing through on the way to the islands, so it's cheap and friendly for those farang who do stay for a while.
