  1. Anybody know if availability of cheap wine (without fruit juice) is any better in Cambodia or Vietnam?

Cambodia does not have import duties, you can find wine and liquors at the same price as in Europe. I noticed some wines also available here (like Penfold, for example) priced close to 50% less in Supermarkets. Unfortuantealy, I had only hand luggage when I went, so I could not bring any here... I don't rememebr about boxed wines, though.

As far as I remember Vietnam is as bad as here.

  2. For more than seven years now, I have been enjoying Corte Antica, an Italian table wine in five liter glass jugs, white or red, for B940-980 at Tesco and Makro here in the South. Makes those boxed wines and the hit and miss unknown bottled wines seem a poor joke.

It is mixed with fruit and very sweet. Good with fruit, dessert or for sangria, terrible with any other kind of meal... Very difficult to get a decent wine in Thailand without spending a lot. I work for an Italian food supplier, we also sell wines, so I know a little bit. best quality versus price are definitively the Chileans. there is a wine called Viu Manent. The Sauvignon Blanc is superb for the price, but you are looking at 460 for a bottle. To be able to find this quality with other wines you need to spend a lot more...

  3. Checked all the boxes and asked the guy at my local wine shop. He confirmed they ALL have fruit juice added as a tax dodge. NO more boxes for me! cheers

BTW he also related a story from a sales rep. One of the brands did not add fruit juice and sold for 1100 baht - very few sales - so company took all the boxes back and remixed with fruit juice and sold for around 800 baht. Sales skyrocketed.

Correct. That was the Cedar Creek. I was lucky to get the last ones before the juice, very drinkable, especially the white one. Then it changed, like you said, and now it is crap. I suggest buying the Matti in 2 litre bottle. Not exactly the price you can find in boxes, but very drinkable, especially the white. You can get it around 430 B. No fruit juice added. I think this is the best cheap option around.

I have never seen Matti wine : where did you buy it?

I live in Phuket. Here it is not difficult to find. Supercheap carries it and also some local stores. I cannot help you with other locations, but if they sell it here, it must be possible to find it in other locations as well.

  5. You don't state why you want to move to SEA. If it's for a career, bad place to start.

I dont really care about my career.I want a place that makes me happy, and S.E.A definitely nails it. The way of life, the climiate, unlimited dining options, buzzling nightlife, relatively low cost of living , when you combine all of these factors it looks attractive in my eyes
If I may, you should try to live in SEA for some time before making such a strong assessment. The world is very big. For example, for people under 30 with good labor skills, Australia offers many opportunities and I think New Zealand as well.

I am not suggesting you should live with your parents money, but as you can afford it, take it for now and travel around the places that look interesting to you. You will discover many things that would be not accessible without being on the spot. Based on my own experience this is the best way to find opportunities.

And finally, I don't think there is something wrong in accepting some help from your family. Just make the best out of it.

    Good luck!

  6. What happened to you is simply ridicolous. If I were you under no circumstances would I get a TV or Elite Card, becuase you do not need them. Like Ubonjoe said, come in with proper documentation and funds. If they don't let you in without any hassle, go spend your money somewhere else. There are plenty of nice places which would welcome you.

  7. You can reserve a ticket out of the country with Thai airways, you have 24 hours to finalize the purchase, which you obviously don't, but if you print it, it looks like you bought it. I did this in Italy to have a visa with Thai consulate. No question asked. You should try it, it doesn't cost you anything. Or buy a ticket out using Expedia, print the receipt, than call them and cancel. Any ticket is refundable within 24 hours. You only lose the booking fee, around 20 bucks. I did this too and worked like a charm. I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  8. If you have an ADSL connection (not fibre), then @tothome as a suffix is correct.

I switched from ADSL to fibre (FTTx) a while ago, so I am not a 100% sure, but due to my pw archive the "y" followed by 8 digits should work!

The first two digits after the "y" are your regional phone code/prefix (e.g. 38 for Pattaya/Chon Buri).

The remaining 6 digits are your "virtual" phone number.

I guess it would be your phone number if you applied for an additional phone connection.

"y" must be a small letter (not capital "Y"!).

Use it before @tothome and as password.

thank you my friend, you are a genius! I was using it with Y capital...

I appreciated very much, you saved me a huge headache!

  9. Hello everybody,

Before going through a painful phone calls with TOT, I wonder if anybody can help me. I need my pppoe user name and pw to connect to ToT.

Form Internet I found out the domain for user name should be @tothome. Do you know if this is correct?

Now, again from Internet, my understanding is that first part of user name and pw sould be my telephone number. The problem is I do not have a phone number, I just have a data connection. Is there anyway I can determine it from the phone bill? I see only 2 numbers, the Service No. (9 figures, starts with letter Y followed by 8 numbers) and Account No. (12 numbers). I treid both. none works (at least not with @tothome).

please, if anybody can help, I would appreciate it a lot.

    thank you in advance,

    Roger

  10. Listen OP, in my opinion if you want to spend some time here and there, your best bet is to search for a job in Phuket or other holiday destinations during high season, which is from December until March/April. Generally speaking you don't make a lot of money but enough to support yourself and peraphs put something on the side. Then you live the rest of the year in UK/Europe. I know it is not exactly what you were asking for, but like many others stated, your original idea is very, very difficult to accomplish.

    Good Luck!

  11. .

How can you just pay the taxes on bogus employees and never actually employ them or pay actual wages?

    Just wunnerin'.

    'nuff said

As far as I know, this is a common practice in Thailand. You just pay social security for your fake employees and that's it, the Thai govermnent does not care about the rest. Do you think that a small business like for example a restaurant who might require 2 WP (foreing chef and manager) can afford 8 Thai employees (and I remark Thai, not burmese or other nationalities...)?

  12. Unless you have a terrible Internet connection, live strems services like 365sporttv or ilikehd, which have servers in Thailand, are going to work very, very well. And the same apply for the free MX repository for XBMC, developed by a TV member, where you can watch many UK and Thai stations for free and with an outstanding quality. Info here http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/725898-watch-global-tv-android-box/

My experience with any live streaming using a paid VPN, OverPlay or from servers outside of Thailand have been terribly poor. Even channels that do not come directly from here, like Skysports on ilikehd do buffer a lot. I have a ADSL from TOT at 10 MB, so mine is not the best option, but the only one available where I live.

Anyway, like many people already said, you can test any service you like with your PC and then if you are satisfied you can buy and Android Box.

    Good Luck!

  13. Just go to the Pullman or another business owned by the Bangkok elite. None of those have been cleared. Just ensure that you make a booking however. They are very busy now that all of their competition have been demolished with a buflldozer.

Not true. The Beach Club of the Mövenpick Bang Tao has been cleared along with the Lotus restaurant. The Angsana in Laguna was forced to move all the chairs from the beach and pull out some concrete blocks.

Pullman for example is not on the beach, they occupie a legitimate ground.

I hate defending the powerful people, but this is the awful true.

By the way, if you want to eat on the beach or sort of (beautiful terrace on the beach) go to La Gritta, outside Patong. It is expensive, but you get amazing Italian food and a wonderful location.

  14. Is the some reason you don't want to use the Truevisions PVR -- TrueVisions PVR (Personal Video Recorder) FAQ

You 'could' purchase a 3rd-Party PVR (with a Hard Drive) that connects to your Cable or Satellite Set Top Box via Composite Video, the better Component Video, or even HDMI, but the issue with the two latter choices will be Copy Protection protocols that will keep the video from being seen on many programs, preventing the unit from recording anything but black for the duration of the program.

The Truevisions PVR is a 'sealed system' so they let you record whatever you want as the PVR will maintain the Copy Protection of the program (it can only be viewed in HiRes on an HDMI HDCP-compliant Display.

I would love to use the True PVR, but I went to the shop a few days ago asking for the Super Sport pkg, which would be perfect for me and costs only around 500 a month. When I asked about the PVR, which I absolutely need, they said sorry, only with gold and platinum pkg. As the communication with Thai are very limited, I would like to ask you if you know the reason for this and if it would be maybe possible to purchase the PVR box or find another solution. I want to be able to record, but I don't want to get the gold package, I really don't need it.

Thank you very much for your kind answers

  15. Thank you all for your kind replies. I ended up going to Khao Lak  and from there did many tours. Waterfall, different beaches, Kao Sok Park. I really liked the area and I reccommend anybody who wants to go to do it during low season. The place is empty, hotel rates very low and if you are lucky you can still find beautiful weather. However, even if you don't, you have many things you can do regardless of the weather conditions.

  16. rogerpilly! I don’t have enough knowledge about Thailand attractions and things to do there but I just know about the Mai Khao Beach. I have visited this beach site with my father in my childhood. It is truly beautiful and the longest in Phuket. So I will recommend you to visit this beach and I hope you will enjoy there. Good luck!

thank you for your suggestion. Mai Khao is 25 km away from my house. I go there once a week. I am looking for a place not in Phuket. Ok that I said short trip, but 25 km is not even a trip! Indeed, you are right, the beach is by far the best in Phuket.

    Cheers

  17. Hello Everybody,

I have a few days off and I would like to make a short road/boat trip (around 4 days) from Phuket. I have already been to Phi Phi, Ko Yao Noi, Krabi, Ko Lanta and very briefly to Khao Lak (which I wouldn't mind to go back...). I have an Honda Click, but I can rent a bigger one if needed. I would like to explore nature (I like hiking very much) and beaches, I am not looking for crowd, quite the opposite. Any suggestion would be highly appreciated. Of course, I don't want to go too fareaway as I don't want to spend all the time on the road. Please also consider the unpredictable weather in this time of year, so I am looking for a place with beach alternatives.

    Thank you very much!
