  1. They're so thin and cheap, it would take me around a year of stops in a 7-11 to collect a kg of plastic bags. Hardly an environmental tragedy considering I use the same amount of petroleum driving a few miles.

The plastic bags aren't the issue. It's the fact that I can walk 500 meters on a crowded street and not see a single waste bin to toss them. I deplore the local habit of just tossing them anywhere, but I can certainly understand why they'd be reluctant to carry a sugar/ketchup coated plastic bag all the way to the next bin.

No bins means a job for someone to sweep the trash up.

  2. My first retirement choice was Mexico. This was in the late 80's. I would stay a few months in one town or city and then move on to see more. Always rented a house furnished. Drove an old car. I loved it. Even learned the language very well. Much easier than Thai thats for sure. Permit to stay in country was six months at a time with no reporting. I loved the mountains, the food and mostly the people. Only reason I left was that i had seen all I wanted to in Mexico. So moved to Asia. Big mistake. My heart is still in Mexico.

  3. I bought a latex mattress (10 cm thickness) from a TV sponsor when I moved here and have been very happy with it. (I have a memory foam mattress in my home country but couldn't find one that was reasonably priced here.)

A latex mattress does not trap heat like the memory foam does so it seems a bit cooler....but you also don't "sink down into" the latex mattress like on memory foam. More like floating on top of it.

There are several latex sleep furniture stores in Chiang Mai so you can try it out and see what you think before you buy. I did that and then purchased online from a TV sponsor - delivered to my door in a few days and it was about 20% less expensive than in the stores.

Whoever told you that you shouldn't buy a latex mattress in this climate gave you a bad recommendation, IMO. (I agree, however, that this climate probably isn't ideally suited for memory foam since it absorbs heat and moisture.) I'd say just the opposite - the material is very well suited for this climate and it's manufactured in this country.

Yes, Mam at www.latexinnovations.com only sells online, so her overhead is low and thus can sell a very reasonable prices. The factory where she orders from has raised the prices 3 times on her but she has maintained her prices. She has had hundreds and hundreds of happy customers all over Thailand, as she has been selling them since 2007/ 2008. She also does a lot of custom cut sizes, and many yacht owners in Phuket order from her. Your description of "floating on top of it" is spot on by the way.

    Disclaimer.....Mam is also my wife....wink.png

This is not a good business model, not raising prices as the factory has 3 times. Unless the retail price is very high to start with. good luck.

  4. Wow, NancyL, that's all you've got?

Not Nancy`s fault, because that`s about all there is in Chiang Mai.

If you enjoy dining out, there are numerous nondescript little restaurants scattered across and around the city, or there are various shopping malls for hanging out, where many people go having not much else to do, no real nightlife or adult entertainments worth mentioning, loads of old granny massage parlours and expensive spas if you like that sort of thing, otherwise can`t think of much else.

There is Nancy`s Expats club that is the main and probably the only social club in Chiang Mai, and a few other regular events on the Chiang Mai Meetup and facebook pages that mostly include specialist activities such as Yoga, meditation and strange dance rituals.

Much depends on your age. Many elderly nearing the end of their lives like Chiang Mai for it`s tranquillity and perhaps feel the city is their last grazing ground before fading away peacefully into oblivion.

The point being, it depends on age and what you enjoy doing?

"Much depends on your age. Many elderly nearing the end of their lives like Chiang Mai for it`s tranquillity and perhaps feel the city is their last grazing ground before fading away peacefully into oblivion" I must say thank you for pointing that out to us who are fading away.

  5. Yes, I know people that watch FOX not news. So I guess they know the truth about everything too?

These are predators, they are not docile creatures like you will find at a petting zoo. Get one of these beautiful animals off their meds for a day or too and then I will give you a month of my salary if you will go run a couple laps around one of the adults. If you are still alive after 30 mins in the cage with him I will gladly pay you.

It is more likely there won't be much left of you to burn.

Treating these animals like this is disgusting!!

If you have not tested blood samples how are you able to say they are drugged ? Truth is, you can't.

  6. " they abuse these animals with narcotics"

"and not drugged all day "

Does anyone have absolute proof of this, or is it just hearsay and conjecture ?

I have always taken an interest in this temple, and used to visit it frequently in the older days before it became much more commercialised. During those visits, I never felt the animals were drugged but possibly lethargic due to just being fed and the heat. On some occasions, due to extreme heat, many of the older tigers were not taken to the quarry, but remained in their enclosures, and we had access to the younger cats under the trees. These cats were extremely active, and did not appear to be under the influence of narcotics.

I am not saying you are wrong in your assumptions, but I would appreciate if anyone knows if these cats have ever been tested by an independent reliable source, (yes I know I am opening myself up to claims of corruption, this is Thailand, money talks..etc). But, at some point I would have thought these animals would have needed veterinary care, and whether it be hair, feces or urine, would have thought testing relatively easy.

On various forums over the years, I have seen similar accusations, yet despite being asked for proof, nothing has been forthcoming.

Please understand, I am not disputing what you claim, I am only interested in where you got this information or, if anyone else can please point me to a reliable source confirming this. Should this prove to be the case, then obviously these cats need to be removed, (as is happening and tests could now be run), and treated with the humanity and respect they deserve.

    Thanks

Sir, you may not be disputing what is constantly said about tigers and drugs but I am. A former owner of 7 tigers. In your post you say in so many words that you doubt the animals are druged but then say your not disputing. You can't have it two ways. By going to this place before, you were helping it survive financially so it could grow into this huge problem. You were not alone however.

  7. "The department’s director-general Theerapong Rodprasert said land transport officials monitored driving of 32,359 public buses during the period from April 9-14 vehicles, and found 2,046 of them speeding.

During the period officials also inspected the working condition of a total of 85,484 public buses.

They found 231 of them were not in good condition or not fully prepared for service. Officials have ordered operators to replace 32 buses immediately, he said.

Operators were also told to fix the problems of these buses which need minor repairs before they would be allowed to put in service, he said.

Besides, officials also found 176 drivers of these buses were not in the condition to drive safely and that operators were ordered to replace all these drivers immediately."

So what are you going to do about it? Just tell the operators to fox/fix the problems? Order 'MINOR' repairs.

Another knows >deleted<k all and hasn't got a clue what to do. We discover each day these school mates who really never paid attention, but because they have a few nice badges are in highly paid positions not knowing what to do. Orders.. orders.. but not a single legal case ensued.

Makes me sick how thick these wankill or be killed idiots are. Idiots - all of them. bah.gif

Perhaps you would be happier IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY.

  9. Organisms do not die easily or quietly. The paralytic is to prevent seizure type activity. The people involved are not usually trained/licensed medical practitioners, since their oath says they will 'do no harm'.

The people that are administering the drugs are amateurs. Personally, just going in there knowing they don't really know what there doing would be pretty frightening.

An amateur would not know the first thing about placing a line in a vein. So your assumption is wrong.

  10. If the case happened in SIngapore I am sure the Singapore government would be perfectly prepared to investigate and file criminal charges. I assume there is an extradition treaty with Singapore. I understand the Singapore Penal Authorities could teach the teachers a thing or two about corporal punishment.

First rule of life : Do not assume anything.

  11. We stay already 5 years permanent in Thailand now in Khok Charoen, Lopburi.

We asked the local only one 7-11 shop can we do this also in this shop. People have only questions, don't know nothing. So I have to go to Lopburi (125 km v.v.) again?

You cannot do 90 day reports at 7-11. That was just a April fools joke.

If you still have 7 days before you report date you can try to do an online report, www.extranet.immigration.go.th/pibics/online/tm47/TM47Action.do

Hope you learned your lesson about April fools day jokes on TV.
