A friend of mine works at a restaurant in Central Airport Plaza. She and all the other employees are double-vaxed (per Central mandate). Every week, all employees must be tested via antigen test (per Central mandate) even though they are fully vaccinated. One worker tested positive, was sent to Lanna Hospital for a subsequent test (positive) and was admitted. So...my friend was told, since she was in the same restaurant, that she must take an antigen test immediately and go home and self-quarantine for 14 days, and test again 5 days later, then 2 days later, then 3 days later (per restaurant mandate), then 4 days later (per restaurant mandate). If all the tests are negative, she can go back to work the day after the last test. Remember, she and all the others there are double (fully)-vaccinated (and in the 20s to 30s age group). This protocol (per Central mandate) appears to be more onerous than for unvaccinated people, (and this is not a positive test case; rather, just an incidental, potential contact). And by the way, the person who tested positive says that she felt like she had a mild cold. That's all. I hardly know what to say...but at the very least, with this kind of hysterical, excessive protocol, don't expect to recover any rational behavior for a very, very long time.

We know the risk groups for this (always have) and those who are not meaningful vectors and who are at ridiculously low risk of getting sick and even lower for dying. At my age, according to the CDC, I have a 98.9 percent of surviving IF I even get infected. I don't know how you access risk, but to most people -- and not talking about covid -- that is a very, very strong probability. If I said that this lottery ticket has a 98.9 percent of winning the six million baht jackpot, would you say, "Oh, no. I don't want to buy that; the risk of losing isn't worth it."? Nearly 99 percent success isn't good enough for you? If you are sitting outside, in the sun, all by yourself -- not another person within 30 meters or more of you -- and you are wearing a face covering (vaccinated or not), how is that different from the guy wearing a tin foil hat sitting on the bench 31 meters away from you? You are both protecting yourself and/or others from....(insert dangerous thing that is a big deal). Seriously, take a big step back and take a good, hard look.

I am not whatever a "Covid Denier" is, or you think is. Covid is real. The statistics are real. You want to talk about risk assessments? Which is riskier: riding a motorcycle here or living your life where SARS-CoV-2 might (or might not) infect you? If you want to be in total fear all the time and wear two masks even though you are vaccinated and a face shield and gloves, more power to you; just don't please force your obsessions on everyone else.

Plastic visors are a good addition for your protection too, as are disposable plastic gloves and continual and copious slathering of alcohol gel (don't forget to swab up your nose with it, too). But what am I saying? You who are more socially responsible already know all this.

The next door neighbor is a Chinese woman living alone with her six-year-old daughter. For reasons unknown, the woman terrorizes the child about once or twice a week, with intense yelling, usually followed by slapping. Once while taking the dog out at night I saw as I walked past the woman hit the child in the face with a book. This is not normal discipline -- they are more like old fashioned Communist struggle sessions and can go on for over an hour. One session was well over three hours long of shouting, screaming and slapping. I started audio recording a few of the more dramatic ones in case I needed proof that I was not exaggerating this, should I need to do something. My Chinese language is not super, but the second-to-most recent time (as I type this, in fact) she was railing at the child about "not appreciating her mother enough." I've really had enough of listening to this. The child is very tiny for a six-year-old and I can't for the life of me understand what such a young and carefree girl could do to deserve hours of beratement. Yesterday the mother had her run up and down the soi as some from of punishment. Afterword, she was made to sit and practice the piano, which consists of playing the exact same song, over and over (every day), no other song, just this one. Is there a website or phone number that I can call to send someone out here to at the very least educate the mother and hopefully scare her enough ("Do you want us to take away your child and put her in a home without a child-beater?") to stop with the senseless torture? What I don't understand is the self-righteousness against something that should have no effect on "the believers." Are the arguments and positions so threatening to you that you must censor them and avoid them at all costs? But for me, I am not at substantive risk due to my age and health and feel that if vaccines are to be given, please use them on those who are at risk. My healthy, 25-year-old coffee shop worker is vaccinated, but my feeble, 72-year-old next door neighbor is not? What is that about? Personally, I am not against the current vaccines, although the very fact that they are "leaky" and numbers out of many places (such as Israel) and the recent statement of the US president that the 'vaccinated need to be protected from the unvaccinated' underscores this, I think they are worthwhile for those at risk. I am however leery of the fact that natural immunity is virtually ignored in these discussions. Why the single-mindedness of vaccines? How do you think we gained our understanding of the mechanisms of vaccinations in the first place? But to the point of the question: Is life possible in Thailand without the vaccine? According to the Google machine, Thailand is 16.7% fully vaccinated, somewhat better than Zimbabwe, not quite as good as Grenada. Given this, statistically, it will be a long time before you are the one that is keeping all of the nation just that one shot away from the mythical and arbitrary 70 percent (and that discounts all those who knowingly or unknowingly have acquired natural immunity). The only thing that you need to keep in mind is whether or not immigration will mandate injections to maintain your visa status to stay here. Foreigners don't enjoy the full privileges afforded to Thai citizens, so it's unclear if forcing this measure is illegal, as if that matters here. However, if you are working here, your employer might require you to get a vaccine or else they could dock your pay (for "weekly testing"). While this is probably against the law, most workers simply roll over and accept that. So yes, life is very possible.
