  1. Seems to be the government is tackling the symptom rather than the cause.

Take two perfect examples. The US and the Netrerlands.

The US also has very strict alcohol restrictions for younger people and yet they have one of the biggest drug problems in the world.

The Netherlands on the other hand is much more relaxed on drug and alcohol use, and has much fewer drug related problems. People are also more inclined to get help, as they won't be locked up as readily.

Why the difference? I believe it is mainly related to culture and education. The more you try and deprive people of something the more they crave it.

A much better policy would be to educate people in the sensible use of alcohol and the dangers of over indulgence. Purely enforcing rules (an almost impossible task that only creates a thriving black market) is just another insult to peoples intelligence and enforces their own feelings of inadequate self constraint.

Now after that intellectual discussion - let's have a drink!

  2. Can someone please enlighten me.

Just moved into a house in Central Park 5 and got my first water bill ( i am assuming as some of the numbers match my water meter).

Where do I go to pay this?

PLEASE :o TELL ME IT IS SOMEWHERE I DONT HAVE TO SPEND AN HOUR QUEUING UP!!!

    Thanks

  3. This is a difficult one, i have recently hired two drivers and do it through the staff i have, usually a freind of a freind etc - neither turned up for work though - complete waste of time. maybe need to be careful on what you pay them to keep them interested - from what i can see there are no set places for drivers - what salary are you looking to pay?

    Thinking of B7k - 10k

  4. I am moving to Thailand at the end of this month. I am in the software business, but also want to start exporting some Thai products.

I need to be in an area where I can get at least DSL type internet connection and need not travel more than say 2 hours to an international airport as I travel all around Asia for my business.

I would prefer NOT to live in the city, but would like a house(bungalow) in the suburbs. Also be reasonably close the sea. Have decided it is time to get a life and enjoy weekends on the beach, have a massage at least once a week, good food, etc.

Plan to have a car and driver but need to be conveniently located for general shopping. Also would like to be in an area where we might make both expat and local friends and they wont have to drive hours to visit us.

Have spent much time in Bangkok and Pattaya over the years.

    Any comments/suggestions would be welcome.

  5. Actually, he does not need to know sign language, my bf has excellent communication skills and will teach him the basics he needs to communicate. He also writes English. Of course a cell phone is good - that is how we communicate when I am away - via SMS. So this would work well for the driver too.

Ok, so were do I start to look for either one of these people?

    Thanks

    Pieter

  7. My bf and I are moving to Bangkok. He is deaf and does not have a driving license. I travel a lot. We need an assistant/driver to help him get around when I am away. He should obviously have a driving license. English would be good - so I can communicate with him :o and a live-in situation would be most convenient.

How difficult is it to find someone like this and what sort of salary would one expect to pay.

:D How about one that gives good massage as well? Or am I know hoping for too much?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Pieter

  8. My bf and I are arriving in Thailand around the 25th of March. Might anyone know of an hotel or serviced apartment that allows pets. I need somewhere to stay for about 2-3 weeks while I search for a rental property. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats that are all totally house trained.

    Thanks,

    Pieter

  9. Personally I think we are born this way.

I never realized I was 'gay' until I was 18. But looking back, the tendencies were all there. I just never new to put a label to it.

At the end of the day, I just am what I am. I don't really care why. It feels natural to me so I do it.

I am more concerned about homophobia.

As Shakespeare once said "Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so".

This is my philosophy - it leads to a live and let live attitude. Look at all the religious extremists, Osama Bin Ladin, George Bush, - all they do is kill those that don't agree with them. And both those ***holes believe they are doing God's work. "Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so"

  10. Check whether Singapore is a signatory to ASEAN, as Thailand is; they are permissive about letting in each other's citizens.  Probably more tolerant about Singap. than Cambodians or Burmese.  I know a rich, gay, young Singaporean who goes back and forth fairly easily.

First thing I learned about national labels, that is ultra-important to Immigration: what country's passports do you and your boyfriend hold?

I hold a South African passport and my bf a Singaporean passport. I am hoping to have a Dutch passport within the next 4-6 months though.

  11. I am a South African living in the Netherlands. Have my own software business.

There seem to be many ways to get a visa and work permit. But which is the easiest option.

I plan to stay there for a long period and although I will rent initially, I would like to buy property. For this i would have to start a Thai company.

Question is - do I open a rep office for the first year or so and once i decide to buy property then start a company or should i just do that immediately. Or are there other better options? I would prefer not to tie up too much cash immediately.

Also - how difficult is it to bring along a lover (we are not legally married).

    Thanks for a great forum!

  12. I am a South African living in the Netherlands with my Singaporean boyfriend. I have my own software company. Lived in Asia before and now wanting to return.

My question is, can I bring my boyfriend along as a dependent?

Actually there is a second question. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way of getting into Thailand. Start a new company, etc.

I think this is a great forum!
