  1. In February the Quads were everywhere! Now the only time I see them are when they are parked on the side of the road with a "For Rent" sign on them. It was a very quick fad that has seem to go out of fashion already. I see about 1/10 of what I saw 3 months ago actually being driven.

I feel for the shops that bought many many to sell. Their showrooms are filled with new Quads that are not selling.

  2. It seems that many (most?) foreigners on the island own a business or two and there are plenty of farang-farang transactions going on daily with cash changing hands for goods and services.

But what if you could buy these goods and services with, instead of baht, an exchange of your business' goods or services? Sort of like an exchange. A business owner would create a "menu" of how many points one of his/her goods or services cost and then when another member of the barter system wants something an exchange can be made.

It is simply replacing money with goods and/or services as the currency.

    Examples:

    - Two restaurant owners agree on swapping meals allowing either owner to go eat at the others whenever her or she wants and the price makes no difference. Maybe 1 meal at the first restaurant will exchange for 3 meals at the other.

    - A building contractor needs some law services and a law firm needs a new fountain. A deal is reached where services are exchanged.

    - A hotel room for your visiting parents can be exchanged for 2 boat cruises.

    - A tailor made suit exchanged for a 3000 baht credit at a bar

    - The possibilities are endless. You might not want the 3k bar tab so you barter it off to someone else for a cell phone someone is selling.

A website can be built where members can post their goods and services and how many "points" they cost. You peruse the list and when you find something you need you determine what you are willing to exchange. The more members the better. The transactions will be recorded on the web site so as to not have any disputes about who owes what.

There are many things on the island that I would like to get but cannot afford. However, maybe I have some very good services that I could exchange for said items.

If enough interest is generated a solid business plan can be developed with all members input and a system that everyone agrees with. A web site can be built and it is as simple as that. It would be run by the members with all books and dealings transparent. Obviously someone would have to be paid to do the set-up and maintenance but that can be barted at as well!

  3. I just cleaned out all the ice yesterday and today it already has a new coat starting to build up. I think one of the posters said that maybe there is a leak and air is getting in via a cracked seal which is then being frozen. When I open and close I do it as fast as possible. I will check for the leak. It's an older fridge. so seems reasonable.

Thanks for everyone's help. Maybe I should start selling the ice?

  4. Can someone please recommend a shoe repair place. I have a pair of leather sandles that need some fixn' up.

try a shoe repair shop :D

you have a pair of leather sandles that need fixing? oh my, why dont you just buy another pair ?

Because the man at the entrance to Fisherman's Village fixed my 2000 baht leather shoes for just 50 baht.

    50 vs 2000

    Easy call.

Plus they are already worn in and very comfortable.

Why am I explaining this... :o

  5. I really enjoyed UBC when American Football was on, I got 4 or 5 games every week! That is the same I would get if I were back in the US. Very cool, plus ALL the playoff games. And all the games were shown live and then replayed later in the day with all the commercials cut out!

Also, UBC is very good for Thai channels, when I DID have a girlfriend she really enjoyed it, plus many of the English channels can be switched to Thai language.

Now that I have no football and no girlfriend I do not even turn it on and have not paid the bill in over 3 months. The internet is infinitely more interesting and interactive (and a hel_l of a lot cheaper) than the 1,500/m UBC.

  6. I dropped off my motorbike one time to get fixed. I could not find my ATM card and when I went back a couple of days later to get my bike I realized I had left it in the bike carrying place under the seat. So when I went to use the card it kept telling me to contact the bank so I did. They said that I had used too many "attempts" at one point with the wrong PIN number and had to get a new one.

So what happened is the bike repair shop took it to the ATM and tried to guess the PIN number, it didn't work so they brought it back and put it back in my bike.

All with a smile of course.

  7. I am looking for a bakery that can make me some special types and designs of breads. I will go the bakery and demonstrate how to make it but then want them to take over mass producing.

Anyone know of someone who can do?

    Thanks,

    M

    Mafaso,

You must be one heck of an entrepreneur.Burrito carts,Tacos, metal detectors NOW PRETZELS? Wow.

On a serious note, try the bread in a few restaurants & ask where they get it from if you like it.Otherwise check out Khun Wit in Chaweng & Nathon he has several bakeries, I am sure he can accommodate your mass production.

    Good luck.

Pretzels? Keep consulting your Magic 8 Ball and maybe you'll eventually come up with the right answer.

    :o

  8. The sad and make me mad thing about the Aunte Ann's pretzle place is NO MUSTARD!!! Argh!!!! And when I asked for it you should have seen the look on their faces "Stupid farang!" :o

BTW, what has been anyones experience bringing food into the movies? I like to buy ice cream at DQ and then bring it in. The last 3 times have had no trouble but last night a Thai guy said something and I pretended I did not hear him even though I knew what he said. Luckily he didn't come track me down. I don't know why it would or should be a problem. It's not like they sell ice-cream.

  9. Don't forget many holidays coming up. I went Friday and everything was closed. I'm going to wait till after Songran.

Can I go to the immigration office at BKK Hospital to get this letter of address? What do I need to show them to prove my address and that that is where I am living?

  10. Next week I will probably have a meeting with a german guy who is promoting solarpower for remote areas in Laos (see <url removed>). Does somebody has an idea where on Samui it would be accurate to install solarpower?

    Please share your ideas, thanx

    Claude

I am pretty sure the sun shines on the whole island all year round. Though in late winter the north of Samui is generally covered in snow.

  11. I could probably make one but am too "kee kee et" to do it! Somebody make me one and I will buy it.

Regarding buying one off ebay, when I have my mother send me things in packages there never is any sort of import tax if she wraps it in box and sends herself. However, when she sent me 2 pairs of underwear and 2 shoes through UPS, I had to 3,000 &lt;deleted&gt; baht for tax.

Thanks for all the info everyone and when I find 1 million 1 baht coins I'll throw a party for everyone!

  12. I hate to sound like a retard (even though maybe I am) but can someone spell out exactly what is needed to obtain a Thai drivers license in Nathon. This thread has many posts that say you may need this or that, etc. I currently have a valid American license and I want to go to Nathon tomorrow and obtain a Thai drivers license. It is a long drive and hope to only have to make it once so can someone tell me EXACTLY what to do and what to bring.

    My deepest Thanks!

    Mafaso

  13. just my opinion as you are aware to many people want to dive in and critasise posts. alot of new shoppping places like Home Pro Lotus Makro etc here now where they require high level of education for many of the positions. best way if you see a girl you like and get the right eye contact just go and talk. alot of the girls in night clubs etc have day jobs but freelance in night clubs at night, so really same as bar girls even though they work in shops etc. i would guess the only way to meet a well educated non bar girl is through working with them. Alot of high class Thai girls would not consider a reationship with us farangs. quite a few of the bar girls have a ood education but got through university or part through got pregnant then got dumped so ended up in bar. more educated ones tend to get long time farang boyfriends prity quick. what your looking for is not easy to find but like you there is no way i could live with a partner who was not educated to a reasonable level. been with my missus 6 years she could read write and speak english when i met her, she had private education through to high school..............but i met her in bar in bkk.

either way you can have some fun looking for what you want

I bet your "missus" speaks and writes better english than you? Geeezzz....

bang on she does, whos the guy in the picture? looked up Geeeezzz in oxford dictionary, even the clever missus never heard it.

It is a colloquialism. You better look that one up too. If you think that is a male in my picture then you might want to get a second opinion on the sex of your missus. Does she have big hands and feet? :o

  14. I'm going to the motor office in Lipa Noi next week to renew my driving licence.

I have had my Thai driving licence for one year now and have Non-B Visa.

Do I need a new document from immigrations or any other documents.

Drive safe and use a helmet :D

you need 2 passport size photo's medical paper and letter from immigration should get 3-5 year licence if there in a good mood :o

2 driving licence photos.... SMALLER then passport

copy of front page of passport & visa page + original for verification

Letter from immigration confirming Samui address

    Your old licence

Took me 10 minutes 5 year licence Bht 505.00

Make sure your old licence has expired otherwise they won't renew it.

Where and How do I get this letter from immigration confirming my Samui address?

  15. I have an older Toshiba Laptop too, now the display is dark. The computer repair shop in Nathon told me to change the motherboard. I didnt believe them so I tried with an external monitor and it was working. Now I know that I just have to change to display inverter. Does anybody knows a website where I can order this?

    Cheers from Nathon, Claude

I know there is an authorized Toshiba place in Bangkok. It might be a little more expensive (or maybe not) but at least you would know it is being worked on by somebody who knows what they are doing and replacing a mother board is a little more involved than replacing a mouse.
