I didn't think it mattered. I thought that either a person needs a visa - or doesn't. And I do.

Anyway, I spent my first 50 years as a (U.S.) American citizen, but I have renounced that citizenship and now I am a citizen of Belize. Does that change anything?

How difficult or easy it is to get a Schengen visa also depends on which embassy you apply for it. I hope it won't be Germany or Austria.

Yes, three meals are provided each day, 7am-ish, 11.15-ish and 2pm-ish and there is a shop from which inmates can buy essentials like soap, toothpaste, food items, canned goods, fruit, coffee, juice, bread, marg, jam, pot/cup meals and hot water and such like.   There is also a more comprehensive shop on the visitors side, items from which can be sent in to prisoners bought by their visitors.

Provided you have money & visitors. But there are times when due to abuse of the system they stop it.

I was told the exact opposite by many brokers, with facts to back it up, that the local insurance companies are regulated by an "ombudsman" who is always on the side of the customer, but the international companies are not.

A Thai doctor once told me not to bother with local insurers as they will always wriggle out of their responsibility. I'm with Axa UK which many don't like but so far I had no issue. All done through a local broker.

Planning a move to Thailand, most likely next year and it looks like health insurance is a complete waste of money, as almost every claim will be denied due to pre-existing condition, even if there is none.

For those of you that self insure, what amount have you put aside?

    Thanks, Jon

I was always of the same opinion about insurance being waste of money. While on holiday in Austria last year I ended up in hospital with low sodium level post food poisoning. 2 nights in a single room, 3 lots of drips & bill came to 8000€. No other treatment.

All was paid by insurer. No argument.

    Went today to CW for my first retirement extension, non-O from the UK.  Absolutely no issues at all.  A 13:00 appointment* and my passport stamped and good to go by 13:45.  I presented the following;

    TM7 application form

Copy of passport photo page and all stamped pages - they didn't keep any other than the photo page and last entry page.

    Copy of non-O e-visa

    TM30

    Apartment lease

3 additional forms they gave me to fill in (overstay acknowledgement, some other things, didn't actually read them)

    Bank letter**

Bank statement (I gave 12 months where 3 should have been enough but why invite issues)**

Copies of bank book account page and last page showing a transaction today**

*Highly recommend to make an appointment, easy to do online, as you get let in first and before the masses waiting for a queue ticket.

** Bank documents obtained form Kasikorn downstairs.  Took maybe 30 minutes and I was impressed that she provided the copies of the bank book without me asking - that was next on my list to go and get done.  Today's transaction was the Grab taxi I took to get there - I had given 100 baht to deposit but she gave it back, "no need", at least that saved 1 more signature and one less thing for her to do.

I then went for a re-entry permit.  TM8 from the information desk, queue ticket and then counter C2.  That actually took 90 minutes as I had to fetch and fill the form, get the ticket and it was rammed with people.  But I was already happy with my initial success so didn't really care.  Could easily save time with some preparation and I think there is some speedy online appointment version that can be done, but I'll worry about that in May 2025.

Oh ,and some nice Ramen for lunch downstairs.

We used to sail through a few times in the beginning. Then this year apartment lease wasn't enough. They wanted tabien baan & owners ID of serviced apt. owners which is a Singaporean company. Previous years no issue despite staying in the same property.

I've got to admit that I was somewhat surprised on Friday that I bumped into an Iranian. I asked him about what visa he was on. He replied he wasn't on a visa. He was a political refugee if I recall correctly. I still can't get my head around it. The guy spoke English as good as a native and openly admitted he was working in the cassava fields. Anyone else come across the likes? Does Thailand accept political refugees?

Not as far as I know TH doesn't. Many arrive here & get in touch with UN to register for resettlement. This gives them some freedom of movement here & sort of protection from ending up in IDC.

Maybe for a International hospital they should be employing Russian staff I see plenty of Russians going there when I have had to use the hospital,

The hospital staff are not completely innocent especially the nurses their attitude has been really bad on a few occasions, To me it was like they dont like Farangs, One time I was in there with dengue the nurse came in the room I asked her to turn the A/C down, she turned it off and walked out of the room, not long after that some farang manager came to see me and as he was talking to me he asked if I dont like A/C I said I love it but the nurse turned it off,

Another time my wife was in accident so she was admitted for a couple days in that new part, and I stayed with her overnight, almost opposite my wifes room was a reception area, at 2-30 am in the night the noise was that bad I went out to them asked them to quieten down and took some photo's as evidence, you should have seen the looks I got, I could go on, but we'll leave it at that.

I have noticed over the years Russians do have a bad attitude

Bumrungrad has a sign in the hospital rooms which says that staff should be treated with respect.

They don't have many Russian patients but Westerners & Middle Eastern.

In many hospitals in European countries you will find hospital security staff for a reason: aggressive patients.

Russians are bossy unless you stand your ground. They have a bad attitude overall not just towards Thais.

I had about 10 crowns done when I first arrived in Thailand and have since lost every one of those crowned teeth due to decay getting under the crown and not being aware until it was too late. If I could go back I would have had implants no matter the cost.

Then yr dentist did a bad job.

I've 25 yr old crowns. No issue.

I'm still amazed at how easy it is to steal jewelry from Thai gold shops

The distracted staff may be an accomplice. Staff in these shops doesn't get distracted as there are 2 staff per customer & a guy at the door.

Staff must have recognised nationality by their accent or if they spoke Thai. How did they know about "getaway taxi" reg.?
