  1. Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone can help me with some advice re: Australian smart phones in Thailand. I live in BKK half the year (work offshore) but am regularly back in Australia. I want to buy my first smartphone in Australia (mainly because of warranty protection in case something goes wrong) but I don't know if Australian smartphones work on the same system as Thai smartphones? Will I have any issues using the phone here (for both calls and internet access?) or will it be fine? I know very little about technology so please keep it basic.

Cheers and thanks for any help.

  2. A lot of farangs here drive just as bad as the Thai's. I saw it in Phuket all the time. The lack of enforcement of road rules is what brings this on, not thai culture. I now live in Bangkok and the drivers there are much much better than Phuket, but that is because I see the police pulling people over and fining them all the time unlike Phuket. Are they perfect in BKK? No, there is still a lot of work to be done. But they are much better.

  3. Muse hotel at Langsuan has a nice rooftop bar, as does above 11 on soi 11 in Sukhumvit. Also the rooftop bar at Lebua State hotel. They all do food but I have only eaten at above 11 myself so can't really comment on the food situation. Above 11 food was nice

  4. I lived in Phuket for 5 years and moved to BKK about 11 months ago. I love it there. I like the energy of the place, I like the fact I can do something every night of the week if I want (parties, restaurants, openings), I can play sport (I mean competitive sport, rugby, football, touch, basketball in a club atmosphere) and I like the fact it is a very culturally diverse city. Lot's of people from all over the world in my circle of friends (thai, english, american, canadian, singaporean, uruguayan, etc). I live in Sukhumvit so I can go to Benjasiri, Queen Sirikit and Lumpini park in about 10 minutes on my bike and catch the sky train to any of the malls if I want to shop, eat or catch a movie.

I know it's not for everyone (the traffic drove me crazy so I sold my car and just take public transport or taxi's now and that works for me) but for me, at this time, it is the most fun place in the world to live. I don't go to the naughty boy venues very often, maybe once a month and usually it is someone visiting and wants to see them. So much to see and do I honestly don't understand how people can say it is a boring city to live in. But again that is me

  5. It's a yearly thing; every faculty (engineering, medicine, etc) goes in a group together. Supposedly the Engineering students have to run where as the others have to walk. Been going on for ages (my gf attended CMU about 10 years ago and it was a long held tradition then).

I don't think reporting the litter will achieve anything, it will just be seen as another farang not understanding thai culture!

  6. Would agree with some of the other posters (not as vehemently though). Koh Samui is ok, but there are better places. Personally I think Phuket is nicer if you want to do the tourist island thing. I just spent 4 days down there a month ago and personally thought the restaurants where pretty ordinary. Not that much to see either unless you just want to lie on the beach every day.

In Bangkok I would go and see the grand palace and the emerald buddha, I found them both quite spectacular. Read up on the scams at those places before you go.

Both Phuket and Samui are severly developed; they are not pristine beaches where you can sit and relax whilst not seeing other people. I would listen to some other posters and go to some of the more deserted beaches if you want that experience.

If you don't want any of the risque stuff stay away from Pattaya.

Chiang Mai can be great as well. Some of the jungle trekking stuff is great.

You really don't need to pay a great deal for hotels. Even 4 stars in Bangkok can be had at most places for around $100-140 USD a night in the heart of Sukhumvit. These are great places like the Grand Millenium Sukhumvit. Search online for deals as it is low season and you should be able to find a lot.

Wet season is coming/already here so plan your trip accordingly. Southern places (Phuket/Samui/Krabi) can rain everyday for weeks, and if you are caught there in one of those times it can get you down. Not much else to do in Krabi and Samui if it is raining.

Sorry to sound down if I do, I hope you have a great holiday.

  7. Firehouse on soi 11 used to be my favourite; but the last couple of times I have been it has not been as good. Can't put my finger on why, it just seems to have slipped a bit. Still a very good burger but not that wrapped in it anymore.

BKK burger company is ok; however the El Diablo is a pretty awesome burger. Probably won't go there again unless I am ordering that burger.

The Game (next to Nana BTS between soi 9 & 11) is a good burger, but it has my favourite onion rings in BKK. Simply awesome. Friendly staff too and a nice place to watch sport. Could easily pass a few hours there eating the food and watching the TV.

Burger Factory in Ekkamai was a great burger for me; probably my favourite at the moment.

Oskars on soi 11 has a pretty great burger. It is more of a 'fancy burger' than a down and dirty kind (I would also put Burger Factory in this category). Nice and tasty though and a cool place to people watch on weekends

  8. Got told years ago (and from my own observation since it seems to be right) that thai's will lose face if they say they don't know where something is when you ask them for directions. Ties back into the village mindset of you are from your village and you should know where everything is (even if they are living in BKK and are from Isaan say or vice versa). So instead of just saying they don't know they will make anything up and try to exit as fast as possible.

  9. Sorry OP but you said in an earlier post that she was still allowing herself to be courted/asked out by other guys at the beginning of your relationship whilst she was keeping you a secret? Sorry, can't be bothered to go back and find the quote, but is that true? Because if that is that would change my whole perspective on her. I would actually be a lot more understanding as to why you still have some resentment over that if it is true

  10. Hey OP; I don't think you have gone into the relationship with the wrong intentions but I think maybe you have confused some of your gf's actions and that might have created some barriers between yourselves. When you said that she kept the relationship hidden for a while that is, from what I have seen, pretty common with thai girls who are dating farangs. From what I have been told, by ex's and thai girls that I am friends with, a lot of thai guys will not date a girl if they know she has been dating a farang. They are basically seen as spoiled goods. I have even heard thai guys talking about this. I think she just wanted to make sure about you first before she let the world know, which is not a bad thing. This is in relation to middle class thai girls who hold normal jobs.

The behaviour part (when you talked of leaving) is also pretty common from what I have seen. Not all thai girls do it but enough do it so that I think they are not thought of as weird by their friends from acting that way. You can argue until you are blue in the face about her being hypocritical and one sided, it does not matter. It is what she feels not what the reality/truth of the matter is and that is all that matters to her.

It sounds like her own insecurities are causing the 'you are like all farangs' comments I think. No matter how much they love us a lof of thai girls I have seen still think that we think they are all prostitutes/poor village girls/think less of them than we would girls back in our own country. It actually caused the break-up of my last relationship; got sick of being told I was racist/looking down on her in simple arguments when she would over-react to minor things because in her head she thought I was coming into the argument from a completely different perspective to what I was. I got to the point where I realised I was hitting my head against a wall and why stay in a relationship for that?

All in all I think you should go and get your degree; if you love her ask her to wait, if too much has been said/done during this time that you can no longer see yourself being with her the rest of your life than that is understandable as well (cause that is why I walked away from my ex!). What happens in 10 years if the thai government does not want teachers without degree's and raises the bar to work her? You will be 43 years old and trying to start again. And why would you work in a government school for 35-45k TBH a month when you can get your degree and earn double that in a top international school, if not more? Good luck to you

  11. Not sure if this should be on the farang food in Thailand or some other part of the forum but I was wondering if their is anywhere to buy kangaroo meat in Thailand? I want to cook some dishes up and was hoping I don't have to bring it back myself in luggage when I go home. Yes I am Australian

  12. Hi does anyone know any websites that are for thai's looking for jobs? I mean employers posting for workers? GF is looking for a job at the moment and is using jobsdb, jobtopgun, jobstreet but I was wondering if there are any more out there?

    Cheers

  13. I think it's a waste of time having another Brisbane team in it. They should have another go in Adelaide or Perth rather than trying to move in on an established team's turf. The Crusher's didn't last long previously.

I think it's a waste of time having another Brisbane team in it. They should have another go in Adelaide or Perth rather than trying to move in on an established team's turf. The Crusher's didn't last long previously.

The Crushers where doing ok but they needed to cut teams when the super league war ended; they basically got screwed by the ARL as they where promised everything when they stayed with the ARL instead of jumping to super league, then got turfed at the first moment (sorry if I sound a bit bitter but one of my dad's good friends was involved high up with the Crushers and he was shattered when they got kicked out and never got over it).

The reason for making a second team in Brisbane is not about expanding the game in Adelaide/Perth but instead buttressing the 'heartland' as they say. Keeping AFL out. The NRL clapped their hands with glee when they put a second team in Sydney for the AFL. they know how hard a market it is their and knew how much money the AFL would go through trying to make a start of it. You can argue against it but that is the thinking behind it. I personally think that the next markets should be the Central Coast and Brisbane as the demographics for those markets (young, growing families) make it very attractive if they can get in their and establish themselves before anyone else. The Central Coast in particular is crying out for a local team, the crowds they get to soccer are very large for a sport that most families don't follow.

  14. It seems most of the posters here did not read the link page story; it goes on to say she was half carried into the room unconscious by the guy (seen on the hotel CCTV). Would seem to validate the story a little bit more. Also I can't believe guys are equating modelling for Maxim, which is a lad's mag with no nudity (probably aimed at a higher age demographic than FHM) to modelling for a skin mag. Even if she did model for a skin mag it does not mean she deserves to be raped.

  15. Try Desperately Seeking Bangkok on Facebook (DSBKK). You will probably get more of a response on their as they have a lot of people working in all sorts of industries. Above 11 is quite a nice rooftop bar but I have not eaten there, only drank. They all tend to be more expensive then normal bars though so it will depend on your definition of affordable.
