  1. I just checked this out - it seems to me as soon as you load more than 2 or 3 pages, Safari starts dumping older pages. I imagine it wants to keep in memory only the 1 or 2 most recent ones.

So, as you said, it really doesn't work for offline reading.

I've now loaded The Perfect Browser and it even holds my traderstation. Good news.

    One last thing.....

What's the best way to transfer my iTunes files and text docs from MacBook to iPad?

    thanx!

  2. The miniatures are just little preview images, not the real web page.

To read later you might want to try opening a new page for each one you want to read later, make sure they're all loaded, then sleeping the iPad. IOS 4 will probably work better than IOS 3 for that. You know you can have multiple pages open in Safari right?

    Hi Nikster

it doesn't seem to matter if they're fully loaded or not......they get lost on re-load.

I've also asked on Macrumours and from a friend yesterday and the best I can come up with is either save with Goodreader or OfflinePages or to try another browser.....Atomic and The Perfect Browser were mentioned and I shall try them.

It was suggested Safari is doing this to save memory, but it seems a high price to pay for the inconvenience. On my Macbook I regularly keep dozens of tabs open and flick between them over the next days to read or re-read or consult. One would think an inactive page would use not much of the memory resources.

Another BIG problem is if I get my stockmarket tradestation up via Browser (there doesn't seem to be a standalone version for iPad and portable trade-ability is half the reason for getting the iPad) I have to go through several security steps to load it up and make my moves. With the iPad Safari on unsleep it reverts to the first step.....out comes the number generator again. Impossible.

(Don't know about IOS4 or 3, I presume I have the latest system in the iPad as I only bought it in CM last week. While we're at it, where's the equivalent of "About this Mac" on OSX to find out what is in there?

    Thanx for the help

    John

  3. Here's my first big iPad issue.....

Suppose I have some pages open in Safari which I might like to read later when I'm outside access to the internet, or simply don't want to increase my 3g bill, or simply don't want to wait for a reload.

The default seems to be that when I go to the 9 "thumbnail" pages on unsleeping it the thumbnail has the full page in miniature. But on choosing a page it fills the screen then tries to reload. On failing to reload it leaves me with a blank white screen informing me I'm not connected to the net.

Well this is a pretty useless waste of time. Can anyone tell me how to get round it?

    Thanx a lot

  4. Thanks for the replies and sorry for tardiness I'm on the case now

How much does he have with SOL, where does he live and what is his nationality.
Knowing him my guess is he has a moderate amount perhaps 100k Euros or less, but it is his only backstop in case of emergencies so very important indeed.

He is Australian but lives in Thailand.

It's a shame he didn't simply have an Australian account all along and benefit from both high rates and rising Ozzie $ but that's hindsight.

Question is action or no action.......is Spain safe enough, is the Euro near it's bottom or not yet, and has Australian $ seen it's move up....is it topping and thus somewhat dangerous?

  5. Hi

I'm here on behalf of an 82yo friend of mine who has most all his savings in one bank.

He asked if I could check up on Sol Bank in Spain. I told him their credit ratings must be public.

Here they are with extra info at

    http://press.bancsabadell.com/2010/11/fitch-affirms-all-of-banco-sabadells-ratings-and-upgrades-banco-guipuzcoano.html:

Fitch's ratings of Banco Sabadell are summarised below:

Long-term issuer default rating (IDR): A

    Short-term IDR: F1

    Individual Rating: B/C

    Support Rating: 3

    Outlook: Stable

Their share price is near the bottom of a 2/3 year gradual slope downwards.

I am told there is a 100kEuro government

    guarantee.

What do we think about all that?

    thanks John

  6. Now thats exactly the kind of specific info I was looking for Somtam! I shall follow yr advice to the letter.

While you're here, do I need more than 32gb?

I would like a couple of movies for a train journey but no other very big files. Yes keep my music collection, but mostly just ability to browse and work on text documents or sketchup.

Anotehr question.....ride a bike a lot so need some a strong case. I am thinking of asking someone to bring a Zaggmate case (with keyboard) from the US so I can take the iPad everywhere and work. http://www.zagg.com/accessories/zaggmate.php

What do you think of that one (anything similar here locally?) and is there anythin else I should buy or be aware of?

    Thanx......

  7. The question is:

Should I buy the 3g version this weekend or stick with wifi only?

I just looked at the DTAC page. In Thai it says 650 pm + 1 baht per mb for "borigan suan geun" which I take to mean service for over........well over what.

In any case it's too much for me,

Is it possible to use a 7/11 prepaid card for emergency 3g use (I would like to have that ability), or shall I forget the 3g?

    650's out of the question.

    cheers John

  8. Thankyou kindly Floridaguy

but I have a gmail acct and I tried uploading to documents last night with some success.

    Some?

Well I couldn't drag photos from iPhoto or MP#s from iTunes, but was OK with pictures left on my desktop and normal text files and PDFs and so on.

    I shall try further.

    Thanks

    John

  9. I compared and the same operation at Bumrungrad or Bangkok hospital was 4 times the price Ram were.

Bumrungrad's prices are now ridiculous and the quality definitely not 4 times better.

It's true, Bumrungrad seems to me about 3 times the price in my experience.

Ram can be fine, I was there today and very satisfied. It certainly is very easy and quick to be seen. I reckon most times they get things done perfectly well. But like some other places from a dentist to the eye hospital on the superhwy I've found that one has to keep a weather eye open for quite gross potential mistakes. Like the Ram doctor who overlooked a considerable goitre in my neck during a physical. Like them failing to get in touch urgently, or at all, after a potentially deadly biopsy result (a staff member mislaid it!). Like the surgeon who was extremely rude when I asked him how many similar operations he'd done (he "couldn't remember"). I can only presume the thought I'd had a second opinion was anathema to him.

The short of it was because I went to Bumrungrad and they followed Mayo protocol and only removed the tumour half of my thyroid to start. Amazingly there was no true malignancy. Unlike if I'd used Mr Angry and by paying paying three times as much I retain enough thyroid that I probably don't have to take a pill every day of my life and have my thyroxine level checked.

Friends of mine have had the most serious surgery, open heart and all, and life support treatment there successfully in the Ramand I'll continue using it.... but my one visit to the Bumrungrad was money well spent......hopefully just the once!

  10. The secret of the KowSoy is in the sauce.

My favourite KS place's sauce is deeply coloured, thickish, and exquisite.

Go along CharoenRat on the east side of the river northwards past Kow Soy Faham, go under the superhwy, then left towards Talaad Kajow.

Before the market (maybe 50 metres before) on the left side is the place in question. Just look for the noodles to recognize it.

I think it may be 30 or 35 baht. I believe you need to charge at least this for good KowSoy.

  11. My girlfriend's friend has a serious illness which until today we thought was leukaemia. She's undergone the first course of chemo and is out of hospital for a while. We now hear it's called

    maleng dtom nam luang

I can see it means "cancer xxxxx yellow water", and I now know it's something to do with the glands, presumably the lymph system, but would like to know the English term.

  12. You will see 25 baht per USD by the end of 2011 and I am seeing a five year target of 15 baht per USD. :D

Thankyou so much it's wonderful to hear where currencies are going.

When Newsweek predicted "The End of the Dollar" a few years ago and went so far as to have a cover picture of someone using a $ bill to light a cigar it confirmed my decision to sell more than half my assets from GBP at $1.896.

  13. Registered where?

On the back of a fag packet by the local puu yai baan?

    I didn't answer your question.

The fact is it that given that the "luk" has a denomination and a registration number suggests that the land is indeed registered somewhere more serious than on the pooyaybahn's empty bumsquirter box......which, apart from the stunning views and proximity to a small estate my girlfriend's uncle's family owns and has built several houses on happily over many years despite it's mere chanoot chumchom, is what raises my interest.

  14. Registered where?

On the back of a fag packet by the local puu yai baan?

You assume correctly, only a Thai can own land in Thailand. As far as the Government part, which part of the word Government don't you understand.

    Thankyou for the smart replies.

I am under no illusions. I consider it unlikely that this "registration" will satisfy all my ardent property desires. However I've been here long enough to realise that sometimes a modest country retreat might be bought with less security and still work.

I would still be interested in some actual information if anyone knows the specifics of the gor bor in question so I can check if it might, just might, be a possibility.

    thankyou v much

  15. It maybe not exactly a title, but as a chanoot or nor sor sam has certain letters on top of the little concrete corner posts, this one has the letters กบ or gor bor.

I am told it is government owned land. I am told one can "buy" it, and that it will be registered in one's name (that would presumably be a Thai person, but hey who knows?). I am told one can sell it or subdivide it and it will be registered in the new "owner's" name.

I have never come across this one before. Have I been told correctly? And does one become an owner or a sort of permanent lessor?

Thanks for any info at all

  16. I had my battery replaced free under a recall type thingy because it became slightly misshapen on one side. Cannot remember but maybe it has to be under 300 cycles of use. You can check the cycles by clicking top left APPLE LOGO then ABOUT THIS MAC then on the panel MORE INFO then BATTERY>HEALTH>CYCLE COUNT

Ridiculous price 5600 for a mass produced item like that!
