  1. should be easy enough to DIY...just buy a 'T' fitting and attach to the little pipe coming outta the wall

For the amateur there's a very easy fitting which clamps over the pipe then you wind down a cutter which is part of it and it bores a hole into the pipe and seals at the same time. Not expensive, cheap, and it has a tap to moderate the water flow!

I agree wholeheartedly I just hate staying in swanky places in BKK now where they think it's bad form to have bumsprays. It seems really unhygienic now.

So I'd like to add a further refinement for the west.

Back in England the water gets pretty damned cold. I think it's worth fitting a small water tank in line which can warm up to ambient temperature. It would be even better if you could fit it into the airing cupboard then you've got warmish water when everything around you's freezing.

Do my contributions get me the Order of the Bumspray?

  2. For a company that;s been called incompetent they look pretty damned competent to me. There got 3 huge waterstreams in place within hours of the fire starting and it's amazing to me what they are doing under the sea there.

Those 3 huge water streams eventually flooded and sank the Deepwater Horizon, thus snapping off the riser pipe causing the free flow of oil into the environment.

I don't know the details I must say. You think it would have been better to not try to put the fire out? No possibility anyone was alive? Maybe good thinking in retrospect?

makes me wonder if some of the posters here are indulging in a bit of

    " pump and dump " ?? :whistling:

As I only knew I had the odds in my favour rather than knowing it would go up and not down I only took a position I could afford to lose but am sitting on a very decent gain already. It would have been more but I suspect Friday was profit taking day, meaning it's probably true any gains will be harder to come by in future. The action in the low 30s though means that some people really want to own this company and that pressure will likely come back. Personally given bank interest rates and the fact that BP after a delay will get probably back to paying me a very high divi on my buy price I may as well hold I'd say.

Of course I'm aware anything could happen!

I must say I'm interested in the universal damnation of BP I can't see their M.O. as coming anywhere in the same league as Big Tobacco or Big Pharma.

Businesses will always go to the limit of the law and a sometimes a bit beyond. It's largely the lawmakers' and overseers' failure they didn't do things better.

  3. And those 3 Thai shareholders cannot be nominee shareholders.

    Thankyou Monty

Yes I've been reading up and you're right. The three Thai shareholders I'm thinking of are actually people of substance and one could probably get away with it, but the thing is this is not cheap land it's a great location and in the several millions per rai. Add to that the cost of development and the sheer effort and time involved and even the first lot dev comes to a large propertion of my total wealth......so it has to be done right for a good night's sleep.

I'm actually concerned that there may simply be no way to do it. It's one thing trusting someone and getting a usufruct or lease as coverage for one modest plot for one's own house.....but for something like this one has to be covered properly. For example if the seller saw that after the first lot was developed the second larger lot, on which I'd have an option, was now worth 50%+ more he might look for any loophole to stop me buying it including inadequacies in my legal structure.

I would however love to do this so I'm very open to ideas.

  4. If the walkway AT the station is closed then the crossing to the hotel is only a small road behind the station, not over the expressway. Don't really understand why it would be closed though unless there's another walkway nearby, maybe at the main road? The walkway from the hotel is completely enclosed. Been a while since I've been to DM though.

In some parts of DM or Swampy there may be smoking rooms, or at swampy in the public terminal there's the hospital room or the Tourist Police office that may let you sit to get your composure if you explain the situation.

very nice of you PP you seem to understand the small detail like "completely enclosed" that helps puts a nut like me at ease. (BTW enclosed by glass or walls?)

On the Amari DM site they mention a 5 minute drive to the terminal but nothing about the walkway.

Funny enough yesterday I arranged to go to visit the airfield outside CM where a friend has a small plane. He said it's fine for me to just go sit in it or hang out. May be another way in if I get to feel easy enough, but I shall go to DM regardless so all detail from anyone welcome!

    cheers John

  5. There used to be a walkway from the Amari Airport Hotel opposite DM that linked up with the terminal.

You use an escalator at the hotel side and a lift on the terminal side.

Thanx PP. Yes it would be very useful if someone knew about this. Can one get up into the walkway without crossing the roads either side of the station?

Don't konw how the layout of DM has changed since they stopped using it so can't help with the 'hiding places' but the toilets tend to be enclosed if you need to be boxed in for a bit?

Not so silly as it sounds! Though a small cafe in an enclosed area is the nice way. Or better still a "quiet room". BTW is there a quiet romm or meditation room at Suvarnabhum for my first visit there?

    cheers John

  6. Hi

In teh lightning storm recently I have lost use of several things including my wireless router.

To fill in I have bought a ZTE aircard. I was given a Happy sim card and went into 7/11 as instructed and got the only thing they seemed to have, a 50 baht Happy card. I set it up and must say it worked very well quite reasonably fast.

Now back at home I have noticed a panel comes onto my Macbook screen asking me if I want to update firmware. When I click DOWNLOAD it says cannotdownload or somethign like that but THEN IT CUTS OFF MY INTERNET. I've tried looking for ZTE firmware but need pointing in the right direction and then again how to get the firmware into the phone?

    Any hints please?

(I've just got back on by reinserting the aircard and reconnecting.....but it's happened several times now.

While we're at it can anyone suggest the best deal for quality and price for me for aircard time. Do I need to sign up somewhere?

    thanx v much John

  7. Been on this forum before I'm the guy who suffers from an agoraphobic panic disorder needing a little help in my quest to return to normal. I've had very helpful input from TV before the first time I managed to get on a train to BKK.

In the last weeks I have made great progress going to BKK from CM by night train. I have managed to get in the lift and stayed in a friend's place on the 36th, yes 36th! floor penthouse of Chatrium Suites (It's now pretty easy!). Last week I even got onto a ferry, the skytrain, and the tube to Hualamphong and can now go into Paragon. Incredibly gruelliing but getting better!

I really want to keep up the momentum. I haven't been able to get on a plane for 6 years since this damned thing, a sort of PTSD, came back. Odd as I have flown planes myself.

I have a cunning plan, maybe for this coming week.

I would like to advance to trying to just hang around an airport until I relax......but Suvarnabhum is to me a cold huge glass inhuman structure in a flat ugly area and despite my best efforts I get terrible panics just even being driven to that area. I need to go a little more gently. An agoraphobic needs to be able to "hide" and preferably be indoors. He needs an escape route to what he sees as "safety". Although even going there is daunting, I think Don Muang may be a better bet to start.

Last week I looked at Don Muang station from the train back to Chiangmai where I live (yes I've got used to the train. It looked like the sort of place I could get out and hang out in the cafe (ridiculously something of a trial in itself in a new place for me), then when I calm down try to go into the terminal.

    Questions

1 I hear the elevated walkway from station to terminal is closed.....but that from the internet was some years ago.....is it still so.....is there a footbridge? Bearing in mind people may have to take their baggage is ithe bridge and the other side enclosed or a covered way? How far is the terminal from the other side of the footbridge.

2 What's the best option bearing in mind my fear of the open?

3 I seem to remember the terminal's only one or two hundred metres from the station.....is that so?

4 I looked up Thai railways but could only find a timetable for the big Chiangmai train. Any link to a local train timetable? (My idea is to get off a local train at Don Muang, hang out, then get on the BKK to CM sleeper train an hour or two later)

5 Am I right in thinking the freeway is between the station and the terminal?

It may seem crazy, but if anyone can offer anything which will enable me to get inside the terminal if possible, tell me of any "hiding places" where I can relax, it would help a lot. Any photos would be great.

I figure if I can hang out at the terminal comfortably maybe soon I could have a some beers, which I normally have to avoid, to help me out on a quick flight to CM where I feel comfortable.

    Thanx a lot!

  9. Hi

I would like to create two tone images of this type from photos:

    two_tone6.jpg

I use a Macbook but have posted here for a wider throw (and of course I can run Windows in VirtualBox.)

Is there anything in OSX which will do it?

    Anything else free?

Best to get some software from Panthip?

    If not the best option?

    thanx v much

    John

  10. You can't go on the Skytrain, but you can go on another train 3x it's size from a station 3x the Skytrain stations size... lol

....that's the wild world of being crazy!

Arrived Chiangmai this morning and the station taxi ride was much quicker than I thought about 20 to 25 minutes.

    cheers!

  11. Friday traffic can be pretty bad so I don't know what time to tell you to leave but if you only have light bags to take you might want to consider the Sky Train and subway if you have easy access to the BTS station. The subway, or MRT, goes to Hualampong station.

    Thankyou both!

My fans will know I suffer from agoraphobia and am not able to go on the skytrain yet so it's taxi today.

So Sheikhan 1645 would be pretty dam_n safe for the train at 1810 eh?

    thanx again

  12. Hi there

I have to go from Chatrium Suites 1km south of the Taksin Bridge and next to the Shrewsbury School to Hualampong station this afternoon. Our train goes at 18.10.

What will the taxi journey time be given it's Friday?

IOW what time must I leave to be safe?

    thanks!

  13. I just discovered I need an aid for both ears.

It's now nearly 3 years on since the last answer in this thread, and Eartone are offering a completely-in-canal unit for $699.

This isn't still just a 2-channel is it?

    cheers

  14. Hi John,

    Good luck with the trip,

    Chopper :)

    Thanx Chopper

I have panic problems too. More often than not my fears are worse then the reality. I don't know if I'd jump head first into Bangkok though, you may want to try one of the other major cities first and briefly stop in BKK.

You're right Wasabi BKK is pretty daunting to those like us......but I've been there three times now. Funnily enough after the Bumrungrad week it had been such an intense experience all round and thinking i would probably die too that I could hardly bring myself to be afraid of anything any more. That went off but there is still some improvement.

    Hi John,

A friend of mine stayed in the Astera Sathorn Hotel a few months back, it's very close to Saphan Taksin BTS and bridge, maybe you could conmsider that place.

Thanx Chopper I just looked that looks like a really good place and the prices on Agoda reduced over 50% look cheap. About 1 km from Chatrium it looks like.

Hey you can get good medication for all that.........

Maybe you can slowly wean yourself off the medication over a period of a few days whilst being up high ... wean off so you dont notice

thanx for the thought Randee but that's a really bad idea. The one good thing is I am slowly improving and this time I've done it without any medication. You really don't want rebound reactions by weaning yourself when you're still in the dodgy situation.

Funnily enough when it comes to my first plane flight which I need to do sometime (I can only go by train which I rather like) I MAY use alcohol therapy, like a couple of beers.....just to break the ice. I shall choose a flight home though so I'm in comfortable surroundings afterwards. Hangovers are extra nervous for me but I reckon the elation of making it back into the air will more than cancel that out.

    Thanx again all

    John

  15. Hi there

    Maybe someone can help.

I suffer from panic attacks and could not travel for some time but I can now go, with difficulty, to Bangkok. Not yet using public transport but can taxi around a bit. One of the things that comes with it is a problem with heights. When I got here 6 years ago it was all I could do to get to even a 6th floor. I even have a problem seeing high buildings. It's improved a bit and to get a tumour removed I had to force myself to go to the 16th floor of Bumrungrad Hospital. That was a good step forward. Back to now I've just been invited to stay by a friend who's got two suites at Chatrium Suites on the river and I'd very much like to go. Here's the thing. He is on the penthouse, the 36th floor.

I dismissed it out of hand at first, but it seems to me it may be a great opportunity. If I could sleep up there I would desensitize myself over a day or two and the height problem might all but disappear I think.

    Here's what I'm thinking.

Book into an economical little place nearby, then go over to Chatrium and just keep pushing until I can get up there.

My question is....where shall I stay first? The nearer, smaller, and more economical the better.

The Chatrium Suites is on the east side of the river about 1km south of Taksin Bridge about 2km south of Ban Rak as far as I can make out Charoen Krung sois 64 (nearest), 62, 67, and 69 are nearby. See a google map here:

    http://www.chatrium.com/?MPage=26

    Thanks

  16. Not sure what a "pinched disc" is, if the disc is bulging out a microdiscectomy may be called for.

In my experience however surgery is best avoided like the plague, most back pain whether or not kicked off for other reasons is actually caused by muscle tension/spasm/inflammation initially set off by trying to avoid certain positions. Your back may go back completely to normal even after a long time. I recovered from something which caused incredible spasm, and numbness in the genitals and leg. I have lost the use of a muscle in my calf permanently it seems. However my "back" has never had a better seven year period, with no surgical intervention.

If you have a moderately resilient stomach try taking the antiinflammatory voltaren. After a lifetime of bad backs my sister and I think about 50% of the time Voltaren, often even just for a day or two, will break the vicious circle of pain and and the tension resulting.

    Good luck.

  17. There is something relevant in the rule for both NHS treatment and non-indexed pensions.

Once you are out of the UK you are not paying indirect taxes which are a pretty big form of income for the state.

I'm not saying it makes it fair and even, but it has meaning for the country.

In practical terms, if you have a medical problem presumably you go back and just act like you're not going anywhere. And maybe you're not. And maybe you are......

  18. My intitial response was that it would be a waste of time and money. A sweetener would get it removed, a lawyer or someone at the land office might remove it when it is sold on.

If someone bought it and changed the usage what could be done? A lawyer would take a long time getting it to court. This is Thailand..................................

I don't believe the land office works like that, and there would always be a record of the restriction if, as one presumes, it's recorded on the chanoot. If your suggestion is correct people would be removing debt obligations to banks from their chanoots willy nilly.

The Thai law was initially based on English law when it was first written because one of the Thai princes had studied law in the UK. However, the Thai law was later changed to a code law and there is nothing left of the English type case law in the current Thai law.

    thanks Stgrhe.

I'm not sure exactly what a code law is........what would this mean in practical terms? A covenant really is a very useful instrument, one would imagine it would surely be part of the system.

    cheers
